I was reading through Black hair sophisticates and realized how far some of the articles have come since a few years back. Now they actually give good advice( wash often, use deep consitioners, etc) as opposed to just getting a weave and pretending to have long flowing hair

. Of course they still showcase weaves and damaging techniques like flatironing everyday, but overall I think that haircare advice may be getting better for Black women

....or am I the only one who feels this way?

I can't believe how much money I shelled out as a teen buying those useless magazines. Some of their advice may have taken a step-up, but I still think most of it could do more harm than good to someone that doesn't know any better. I flip through them sometimes when I'm in the grocery store and it's still the same old recycled pics.

U are probably right but I wouldnt know since I boycotted them a long time ago...lol. It really made me mad that they cost an arm and a leg and on top of that they lie. Most of the interviews are with women who wear a weave and proceed to give their regimen and how they keep their hair so healthy.

Not that your hair cant be healthy with a weave but I feel it is misleading bc they dont mention the weave at all. They waste pages and pages of space on weaves and write a paragraph answer to common haircare concerns. Maintaining a weave isnt the information we as black women need, we need to be educated on actual haircare and health.

This forum could make a fortune if they published a magazine! REAL women with REAL hair and REAL regimens...lol.

ok my vent is over but I only flip through them if Im looking for a hairstyle but will never spend my money on them anymore. all I need is right here for free anyway!

I enjoy looking at the magazines for various styles. As for hair care tips, the last two issues of the magazine posted tips that I had already learned from this forum. They haven't told me anything I haven't learned here and to top it off they don't tell me as a reader how I can acheieve having long, healthy, flowing hair. I expect for $4.99 a magazine I should get some good tips...I guess not.

I remember buying those magazines in high school and college. Yeah, they would almost always put at the end of the paragraph "if you can not achieve this look try hair extensions" or something like that.

I will have to start checking them out again.
