Hair Grease and Washing

Okay I use products with petrolatum and mineral oil in my hair everyday. Yep, that's right, good old fashioned hair grease and vaseline. I rinse my hair out everyday and I wash it with whatever shampoo I like at the time about once a week. It is approaching summer time and I am trying to ween myself away from weekly pressing and petrolatum is just heavy enough for my hair. I doubt I'll ever stop using petrolatum because my hair is growing very fast and it is the only thing that will weigh my 3b/3c natural hair down, especially in the front where I have fairly short bangs. My question is, how often should I use a clarifying shampoo or is it really that necessary. I have a bottle of Pantene's but I am scared to use it.

Haha...that's me lovelysecret, yeah that's me. I couldn't for the life of me remember what name I had or the password so I signed up again.

Sorry

I would like to know how often do you clarify? I am begining to think that grease is ok for my hair. Maybe the petroleum is not as bad as we think, just as long as you don't base your scalp with it.

How often do you clarify your hair?

Hi! I'm almost ashamed to say that I use hair grease too. After I wash my hair and condition (which is every three days)I use a mixture of Lets Jam and Softee Hair food. It seems to be the only combo that defines my waves.I've tried a lot of the products that others have recommended but nothing else seems to work as well for my hair. I'm still looking for other products that work for me but until then I'll continue to use it.I'm still new to this so hopefully I'll find a less greasy alternitive. But sometimes I think If it ain't broke.......

What's funny about this post is for anyone to feel bad for using something that works for them....if its working, and you are having great growth, and little/zero breakage, why stop for the sake of stopping?

Especially if you wash frequently, I cannot really see a lot of problems...if they haven't started by now, ya know?

Maybe "ashamed" was the wrong word. Reluctant sounds much better.I like the way my hair "looks" with the grease but the greasy "feel" and grease all over everything pillows, scarfs ect. makes me feel like finding something that works the same as far as definition of my waves,But with less residue. Maybe I should have clarified that I'm not trying to stop for the sake of stopping but to find a non-greasy alternative. The overall look of my hair is what makes me think if "it aint broke..." Maybe I should have stated the problems I was having with greasy feeling, residue, ect.

getmoore, have you tried, Elasta QP's Feels Like Silk Gel? This works great on defining my daughter's 3b/c waves.

Teva-I don't set a certain amount of time to clarify. i just clarify when my hair feels like it has build up OR sometimes I won't clarify for long periods of time, I will just wash with a shampoo that is a tad harsher than my cream of nature. I grease my scalp, I'm not ashamed. But that's with Sulfur 8 which has been the only thing that has been able to control my dandruff without having to wash everyday (regular grease won't cut it either) and I like it because it tingles and feels good.

So, I did start to clarify every now and again because I am no longer scared to but now I follow that lather up with my creme of nature so my hair feel the same.

Also my hair isn't greasy at all if I put vaseline or grease in my wet hair.

My hair thrives on products with petrolatum in them....wouldn't give them up for the world.

I think Comfortablynumb had a good suggestion. Have you tried it on wet hair? For me personally, I don't care how light the oil is, if I put it on dry hair it's just going to sit there.

I use grease too! Nothing to feel bad about.

Anyways, I never clarified until coming to this board. And to be honest, it still doesn't make much of a difference if I do or don't, or at least I don't notice one.

I like Ultra Sheen's Satin Press and now I like TCB's Lite Hair Grease. Not heavy or greasy. I think a clarifying shampoo is only necessary when you notice your hair is dull from the buildup.

This is why I stopped using "grease." I couldn't stand the grease on my clothes, pillowcase, scarves, etc . . . Not to mention, the mineral oil was clogging the pores on my back and causing me to break out. Ugh!

Thanks, I am happy to know because I like grease too. I have not found anything that can keep my waves nice and to have them lay down well. I will try it on wet hair also cause I dont like that grease feel on everything. Also on wet hair I do not have to use alot.

Thanks again

I agree.

To me I don't see a point to using grease then rinsing it out everyday, seems kinda futile, but if it works for you.
hey.

I use Sulfur 8 on my scalp and sometimes I mix with Dudley's cream press. When I don't use grease I have problems with itching.
