Hair Breakage Alert: Pulling hair back with a Scarve for my Puffs is

causing little pieces of hair to pop up on my sides. I think pulling my hair back with a scarve could be straining my hair which is causing it to break. I don't see the short strands anywhere up but in the front. Have you ladies had this problem?

It could just be because you are tying it down with the scarf and it's just new growth that would, otherwise be curled up tighter. The scarf is laying the new growth down and stretching it; causing it to straighten. Does that make sense? If you are using a silk scarf and being careful when you comb your hair as well as keeping it moisturized then I don't think it is breakage. If the scarf is any other material then I would say it is breakage (I got some breakage by using a nylon stocking as a headband when I attempted to transition).

Does it have to be a silk scarve?

I would have to say yes or silk-like or satin-like. Cotton fabrics rob the hair of moisture and your hair will eventually break from being in contact with the fabric. Also, I used to think nylon was just as good a silk but then I noticed that it was snagging my hair and breaking it off. If you really like your cotton scarves you could line them with silk fabric and I feel that that will be fine.

As a transitioning natural, I have heard horror stories about tight puffs...be careful, ok...scarves or not.

I haven't had any problems with wearing puffs, but I don't make them too tight. My best scarves are sort of a gauzy, polyester material. Just the normal kind you can get at Walmart or Target or somewhere. If they are too silky-feeling they won't even try to stay on. They just fall out. I have a couple that are more the silky material but I never wear them because they won't stay on.
