Grr... Splitzville... Pics inside...

When I had relaxed hair, I never had split ends and I attribute that to using grease to blowdry my hair after washing it. All I used was shampoo, grease, and blowdryer. No other products. Not even conditioner. Grease keep my hair smooth and moisturized. Water dried my hair out. But my hair also wasn't color treated and it was relaxed bone straight.

I have a hair that was slightly worse than your second pic. Im hiding my hair (hadnt relaxed in almost two years), haven't had it professionally straightened, used the heat protectant, etc and STILL get splits.

You could have a porosity issue. My hair always has been chronically dry and easily damaged.
After trying everything, (changed my diet, caring for my scalp, aware of product) and still have had dry hair.

I leave a portion of my hair out in the front for a natural part (I have a sew-in) and I been able to tell what is helping with the porosity thing.

After moisturizing my braids underneath with aloe vera/distilled water mix or Hawaiian silky, I seal with coconut oil.

THEN I spritz with a mix of ACV and distilled water. I feel the cuticles close and my strands pass the porosity test (place a strand of hair in a bowl of water, if it sinks within 2 minutes there is a porosity issue.)

Have you tried going hardcore concerning porosity?

I've been using Roux porosity with every wash, I thought that it was a porosity issue in the beginning too.

are you ever in NY? cause id recommend my hair dresser whom ive been going to for over 6 years and he knows what a trim is.

im also agreeing with the professional trim too, but like you said you need to find someone you trust.

may i suggest redken anti-snap leave in for your hair? that stuff has gotten me through some times! it helped me with splits and whatnot.

Thanks, The redken is actually top of my list for the next Sally's trip. Do you think a Henna treatment might help?

Maybe you can incorporate ceramides into your regi. sunflower seed oil, grape seed oil and walnut oil are great. Maybe you can add one of these to your deep conditioners and leave ins.

Also, do you pre poo? Maybe adding this step to your regi everytime you use shampoo can help.

Dont worry chic, we will get to the bottom of this!!:sneakyhug:

I dont pre-poo anymore. I use to find that pre-poo b4 I wash made my hair dry :ohwell:

leave the henna alone until you fix this. you can actually make it worse if your hair has a bad reaction to it. i.e. gets dry and rough and splits more

this is exactly what my relaxed hair has looked like from late 2009 until I BCed on Dec. 31. In March 2010 I cut my APL hair into a short bob thinking that I could start fresh and the splits just kept happening as well as the white bulbs. I finally just gave up and decided to just go ahead and transition in August. My relaxed hair was always healthy except for a mishap in 2005 where I was not properly neutralized so I knew that I could have healthy relaxed hair but for whatever reason it was just not happening for me anymore so I just cut it off. Hopefully the ladies give you great suggestions that wont require such drastic actions. Good luck

I dont ever flat iron damp hair. If i flat iron, which is maybe once every 3 months or so, I usually make sure that I use a protectant.

You should also make sure your heat protectants are not making your hair wet. Spray protectants should dry completely before flat ironing. I've made that mistake a lot.

I'm going through the same thing.

I *think* mines come from lack of protein treatments, Winter/raditors/heater and, not properly securing my hair whilst sleeping (the areas that are in contact with the pillow are the worst). So, I stepped up the protein treatments, sealing hair twice a day and plaiting my twisted or, pressed hair before securing with scarf. I also use a satin pillow as back up. Hopefully this will slow the splits down.

I trim when I see the splits but, they multiple like Gremlins.

Oh, regarding ridged scissors (micro serrated blade) - you have the right one. The ridge stops the hair from sliding down the blade therefore good for a beginner. They last long too - I have mines from my Hairdressing kit (which has the same blade as yours) back in the late 80s, sharpen once whilst at college and it is still going strong.

I just wanted to add I have been using Sulphate Free shampoo for over a year now, and have noticed a BIG difference in my split ends. They actually don't come around to often anymore. I have gone months with out trimming where as before I'd get it every 4 months. I deep condition every wash, I use a light protein to heave protein as well.
I blow dry every wash.

I definitely believe the SF helped to curb the SE. :) Good LUck!
