Grainy coconut oil

Live, Laugh, Love
For the life of me I can't figure out why when I get to the bottom of my jar of coconut oil it's all grainy. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a way to avoid this? It's happend with both Emerald brand and Spectrum brand. It feels like little hardend pieces of coconut are mixed in and they settle to the bottom.

TIA

Is it unrefined, extra virgin coconut oil? It's probably a few coconut solids that have settled to the bottom. I don't think it's anything to be alarmed about.

Yes, it's the unrefined, extra virgin, organic one. I just hate the little balls of coconut that are left in my hair :nono:. I'll prob. just start mixing it with something else when I get to the bottom of the jar.

If you pop it in the microwave, they'll melt, too. For some reason, they have a higher melting temp than the rest of the oils.

There's some coconut fiber remaining in the oil, during the extraction process. So, hence the grainy fiber look and feel that settles at the bottom of the jar. Those little grains of coconut are not harmful, but I agree with you, the feeling is like rubbing sand between your fingers, and in your hair. I melt my Parachute coconut oil by running hot tap water over the bottle for a few minutes, and when the Spectrum jar starts feeling grainy, I know its time to buy a new jar!!

My Vatika was like that I just set it in a cup of hot water that I microwaved, and the grains were gone.
