So I'm about 13 months post relaxer, but still holding onto my length, I'm about 90% ready to BC, but had been hesitating because I just had no clue what to do with my hair. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING out there seems to be defining any curl pattern in my hair.

But the other day, I thought back to a girl in high school with this gorgeous waist-length 3/c-4/a-ish hair. It always looked kinda wet, but never dry or frizzy. Her secret: water and grease. It was a well-known fact.

So on a whim, I decided to test a stray couple of strands with my husband's generic petrolatum/mineral oil-laden fake coconut grease and the result: perfect, shiny 4A spirals. Here all this time I thought my hair was just wavy! Now, I don't know about doing a whole-head application of this gunk, or the long-term effects, I just thought it was odd considering I have not seen even near similar results using puddings, gels, cream gels, or serums.

I have to wonder about all the hype of "petrolatum free!" and "No mineral oil!"

Someone else just posted this week that they had used non-petrolatum get :look:. I think that is right. And she was using the old Blue Magic and she was having great results.

I think it is the heaviness of it that helps with the curl definition. You can probably find some "grease-like" products without mineral oil or petroleum. As my hair grows longer I will probably give it a try to see if I get some hang time.

My college roommate had 3 something hair and each morning she applied water and vaseline and that was it. She wore 2 APL braids every day. They always looked wonderful.

Yes, ppl still use grease, especially to seal and lubricate strands. Some still use it on their scalps.

Interesting thread, I've just never seen grease described as a curl definer. It also seems to be going the way of the dinosaur on drugstore shelves! After they discontinued my beloved lustrasilk moisture max, I am scared for ghetto/country drugstore products everywhere!

You will probably be able to find them for a long time in dollar stores and those targeting overstocked products. They sell some stuff in some of these stores that I have never seen before. And there is this new trend of companies making products for lower end stores so some things you will find in Target/Walmart, etc and other things you will only find in the Dollar Tree.

Oh, yeah that's not new to me. My aunt used grease and water to define my curls when I was a kid. She also used that concoction for what we would call twist-outs today. They lasted a looong time. They still have plenty of petroleum products at the BSS, but they do seem to be disappearing fast.

I personally think that the mineral oil in Miss Jessie's in part of why the products work well, even though people are against that ingredient.

I never tried it as a kid...guess I should have. Well, good to know. I may try it on my braid out this weekend!

One of my male friends used vaseline as his curl definer until I told him to use some leave in conditioner and stop running around looking like I could fry an egg on his head.

It's pharmaceutical grade (petrolatum) so I don't know why people are going on and on about it being "dangerous." It's funny because people will use Grandpa's Tar bar shampoo but diss petrolatum. Um, same origins. Whatever works is fine. Not everyone looks like a grease-head from old fashioned oils.

Ok I use grease but all this talk about them discontinuing products is making me want to go out and stock up! Let me go get me about 10 jars of softee before they stop making them!

Girl you will be able to find it at Dollar General! lol

Grease and water is usually the only way i can smooth my natural hair into a neat bun with little discomfort.
