Would going without a perm for a year and only having braids still cause breakage of the relaxed ends? Even if there was deep conditioning involved and a lot of moisture included?

sweetdaises are you gonna transition or your'e just stretching your touch-ups?

For many people it does but for me that was not the case. I just went 7 months without a relaxer with minimum breakage. The key is to keep your roots moist and soft. The Keracare Humecto conditioner helped me alot. I would put it in my hair and leave it in for hours. I wanted to go 1 year but was kindof forced to get a relaxer b/c of my job. If it was not for work I would have keep it in cornrows for the remaining 5 months. But that is looked down upon in corporate amerian. My hair was not breaking but with all the thick new growth it looked untamed. So be careful because most people I know get breakage after the 2nd 3rd month so I may just be lucky.

Well im about to take about my braids in about 2 weeks because this will be my 3rd month.I'll deep condition and detangle using Creme of Nature and thne get them back in for another 3 months without a touch up. I plan to continue this process until next June but I'm not sure if my permed ends will break off and cause a loss of length.Any suggestions?

I'm trying to stretch my touch ups and give my hair a huge break which I'm hoping will result in a lot of length.

SweetD, I don't know the answer to that. I personally wanted to get rid of my relaxed hair when I put my braids in, so I didn't care. And I don't know if it'd have all broken off if I hadn't trimmed it all off in steps. (I used to trim a fraction of an inch off every time I redid a braid, till I'd have trimmed every braid. In time, I got rid of the relaxed hair. It was overprocessed, very thin, desperate to be put to rest.

But my guess is you could still save your relaxed hair with extra TLC. My experience isn't one to go by since I didn't know how to care for relaxed hair and I never used to deep condition or use leave-ins at that time. So my relaxed hair was sorta neglected and I made no attempt to bring it back to life. It will be interesting to hear what everyone else thinks.

Thanks Nonie. But what I know for a fact is that my hair grows fast and though my stylist tells me it needs to be cut I'm not sure if thats the route I should take because she tends to be lazy at times

If you want to give your hair a huge break I'd say do it without the braids first of all. I did this for 12 weeks and I'd never do it again. It did more harm than good. No amount of conditiong helped, the point between the two textures made it harder.

When you take out your braids you're going to have to detangle the hair, this may be harder to do than usual but you'll be fighting with the two textures as well as detangling the hair.

I guess another factor also depends on how your hair is relaxed whether it be texturised, straight, bone etc on how well it could hold up.

I am currently in my 7th month without a relaxer. I have noticed some breakage but not a lot. I do a lot of conditioning. Conditioner washes daily with leave-ins and lots of braidspray! I'm gonna leave these in until August, about 2 months but no more than that!

I did this once (no relaxer for one year; wanted to go natural but changed my mind...)

When I finally relaxed, I had lotsa hair but needed a good trim. HTH

Sweetdaises go to www.growafrohairlong.com they have a great braid regimen. I wish I had known about that site as well as this one when I had braids. I went six months for two months at a time. Got a lot of new growth maybe five to six inches -- a lot for me anyway.

No, I had braids from January to June and came upon hair sites around May when it was too late, but I will be braiding up again in January so I'll be prepared.

No, I didn't experience any breakage at all. I kept my hair in braids or braidouts most of the time to keep the curly texture uniform and I was very good about moisturizing. HTH.
