why are these women always the ones to offer advice:lachen:

Lol, it's true. A let a girl like with hair like that relax my hair. Same relaxer and everything. I was young though, so that's my reason.

Never heard this but periods are your friend, lol.

Team Grammar, huh?

OP I've never heard of such a thing. You need to stick with what works for YOU instead of playing Russian roulette every time you relax your hair. Seeing who the advice is coming from, I wouldn't even give her the time of the day when my hair flips back and forth in her face! :lachen:

^^^It means that here as well until it's within the context of grammar :look:. But seriously, it took me 3 tries and a break with Evanescence to read just one little paragraph without it. Yes, I agree, you can get into trouble.

nothing could be farther from the truth...in fact it is NOT a good idea to switch relaxers. I know from 'experience' that different relaxers process a little differently and have different ingredients that may not agree with your hair. Find the one that agrees with your hair (as much as LYE can agree with anyone's hair), and STICK TO IT.

A friend recently asked if it's okay to switch relaxers as she tries out new salons in her area. I didn't have much advice to offer her as I've not been faced with needing to switch often. How often is too often?

Hello,

My stylist said that you should not continuously change your relaxer. I dunno if that helpful but I did hear her telling another woman that just started coming that.

I've definitely had problems with that, the worst of which when an "experienced professional" at Mizani applied a no-lye, when I put on my forms and reiterated that I was using lye. Then she wandered off to the basement to mix up more (which is how I found out it wasn't lye), because she ran out.

After leaving NYC a few years ago, I switched back to no-lye, since I couldn't find the lye one I was using in stores. My hair got damaged and when I visited NYC, my fave stylist cut it from raggedy shoulder length to a bob in the back.

I definitely see the set backs from switching. When I switched back to lye again, I babied my hair a lot with protein treatments and deep conditioning, but it definitely did some damage. I'll probably eventually cut off the no-lye ends. I haven't switched between brands of the same type. I bought Mizani Butter Blends last summer and have been using that diluted with conditioners and oils and will be switching to Affirm the relaxer after next.

The advice my stylist gave me about going to new salons is to try them out for rollersets and talk to them to find out how knowledgable they are. NOT blow outs -- how many cheap blow outs did I get that were at best not straight because they took random sections and forgot to use heat and tension...or at worse, that yanked out hair? I have had people cut off 6 inches when I went in for a trim, use the wrong relaxer, over-process my color, etc. Less risk with rollersets. Of course, all those hair disasters also taught me to educate myself and ask questions instead of just trusting that someone with a license knows what they're doing.

Your friend can find out if a stylist is comfortable with her hair, discuss regimen, products and technique -- all while getting a rollerset. But having someone she just met use chemicals, color or scissors? Not good. That's like having sex on the first date. How often does it work out well?
