Ghetto Fab Hair!!??

There's a lot of people up in arms about this Kohls's ad and I have to say it is on the offensive side to me. This was brought to my attention by a youtuber who I'm subscribed to, she did a video on it.

Why does this have to be ghetto?.....

It's a costume wig that is sold at Kohls I think but I'm seeing it's sold at various places online also. (the first one posted is sold at Kohls)

This is what is in one of the descriptions, wow......"Darling, you look fabulous in this ghetto fab wig! Add this to one of our diva costume and you are truly and fashionably ghetto!"

ghetto fab wig - Google Product Search

I just don't consider these styles "ghetto", what do you guys think?

There's another thread going on this. They say Khol's is removing this wig, but now we find out that Sears is selling it too.

Who knows how many stores are selling it. Smh...

To answer your question, no I don't think it's ghetto. The manufacturer, and the stores that are selling it will have to answer to a lot of black women for this, cause a lot of black women are angry.

Somebody really dropped the ball on this one! No, it does not look "ghetto." It looks like afro-textured/curly hair.

I'm sure the manufacturer could have thought of a better name and description than "ghetto fab," but I'm more concerned that the buyers at Kohl's and Sears, or whoever does some type of quality control didn't catch this. I'm not really familiar with retail, but somebody purchased this product on behalf of the store, and it had to go through a lot more hands to make it on the shelves.

Is it a wig attached to a theme costume?

Because on it's own it looks like just curly hair, but from what little I see in the entirety of the pics I see a vague disco/funk feel to it which may have contributed to what they were attempting to say.

That is not ghetto. Plenty of AA women have this style who are classy and professional. I wonder how they would feel if they looked at this add and saw their current hairstyle being called Hood Fab.:nono:

I agree their choice of words were not the best. They could have used 'retro', kinda like Austin Powers.

Has anyone contacted CALIFORNIA COSTUMES? They are the ones behind that wig on the google link from OP.

THAT is ghetto fab? Of all the koolaid color wearin, gelled up hairstyles, they chose natural hair as the ghetto style? :lachen: Moreover, why is "ghetto" even a costume theme. As for the wig, if I first saw it in a bss, I probably would have purchased it for protective styling.:drunk: I guess too many people starting to notice and admire how truly beautiful our hair really is if they have to toss out that misconception.

My brother's GF and I were Halloween shopping yesterday..and this is SOOOOO ODD!

We saw this wig and went "Ghetto Fab???" We didn't understand why this is construed as ghetto fab.

I am not one to turn everything into a black and white issue...but this definitely gives me pause!!

Wow. Yep, I find it ridiculous. So, anything remotely connected to AA culture is ghetto to them? On the other hand, it's not even particularly kinky. It's just a curly wig.

I'm just gonna have to chalk this one up to someone at California Costumes, not to mention the buyers for the stores who put this middle finger to curly haired sisters everywhere out on their shelves, to being a complete and out of touch morons.

I've always hated the term ghetto fabulous, and I've been patiently waiting for it to die. It just sounds ridiculous no matter what. The wig's not too bad though.

Wow, so this is their definition of "ghetto"? Seriously? So if THAT'S ghetto....then what's this called:

Or This:

Personally, I kind of like the Costume. They should left the description to say something like: "Funky Diva Chic!" or "70's Groovy Gal"...something to that effect. The whole "ghetto" wording is just offensive/insulting toward the afro-textured community. Smh..they lost major cool pts. with this one. :nono:

^^I don't know what the 1st pic is called, but I think the 2nd one looks like a helicopter. I don't think they would even bother to add fabulous after that hairdo. :giggle:

On a serious note, I think that the name "Ghetto Fab" is offensive. I cannot fathom what the person who chose the name was thinking. :smh:
