Getting Knotted a "Sign" to Stop Stretching???

i'm stretching (about 4 months now) and i did twists over the last 2 weeks. i washed and combed my hair and discovered several "knots". there were about 6 or 7. i stopped counting because i was getting pissed! my hubby had to help me detangle them and i had to "snap" one of them out with a fine tooth comb.

the weird thing is that i discovered the knots "after" i took down my roller set. i was in the process of flat ironing new growth with my miniglide and it wouldn't go all the way down the section of the hair. some of the knots were tiny (4-5 hairs) but some were alot larger. i don't know what happened. i didn't do anything different. could my hair be getting too thick and tangled??? :ohwell:

the last time my hair knotted was in 99' when i wore a sew in weave for 2 months.

For me it is..I use Surge and it helps..plus not combing daily is a beast...I try to get chopstick to break up the knots and relax that same week..

Use a K Cutter comb to get the knots out. Just use one of the long teeth to gently pick thru the knot. Snatching it out splits the ends.

thanks. i actually snatched it to break it. i couldn't stand taking the scissors to it but i guess i just made it worse :ohwell:

Stretching or not (stretching for me would be over 4 months), if I dont comb daily, I will have knots. It got so bad once over the summer. I was washing like everyday and something went terribly wrong. I was frustrated and just ran the comb through, tearing out hair. The sound of the hair popping is the equivalent of nails scratching against a chalk board. :lol: :mad:

When stretching, getting tangles or knots is inevitable. Several ways to combat them;
1. Co washes, co washes, co washes!--they cut thru naps like no body's business...in fact I find that when I super stretch I MUST wash more frequently.

2. K-cutter combs are good, so are Jilbere shower combs

thanks ladies, i'm going to have to get one of those j combs. i guess i went wrong by "not" combing everyday with the twist curls. i just woke up, put oil on it and bounced. i figured not combing was a good thing

ohhhhhhhh, i can't stand that sound either! ouch!!!

You are not alone...I stretched for 14 weeks( which was my longest stretch )and I swear I almost lost my whole head of hair. It was soo bad I could not get the comb through it and yes, there were the knots.

I get these knots all the time...is it a single strand of hair with a tight little knot in it? I learned somewhere else that they are called fairy knots or pixie knots. they are VERY common for people with curly hair. most people just cut them right above the knot. a lot of people find that they somehow bind with other hair and cause more splits or knots. its much better to cut them than it is to rip or snatch them. if you can untangle the knot - go for it. i can't do it. i have a lot of them too. everyone gets them, but curly heads get them especially.

and i don't think it has anything to do with stretching...i'm natural and i get them often!! what i've been told helps manage them (get less, that is) is to braid your hair at night. and keep it super conditioned! and as detangled as possible.

I'm so glad you posted this question. I have had the same problem, I've been stretching for 16 weeks so far. Thanks ladies for all of the tips!

It is amazing that you guys were able to super stretch your relaxers. I couldn't stand the minimum ng I got and bcd. I think knots are inevitable esp. since your natural hair is overcoming your relaxed hair.:ohwell: I wish you continued success.
