Actress Gabrielle Union can now add entrepreneur to her resume. The Being Mary Jane leading lady has just launched a hair care line as well as a clothing line.

Union stopped putting harsh chemicals like relaxers in her hair at the age of 25. She wanted to create a product to strengthen and protect the hair of women of color.

“When you take care of your own natural hair when you wear wigs, weaves and extensions… Around 25 years old, I stopped using relaxers and slowly grew my natural hair out. It’s been a helluva hair journey. We are all on a hair journey. I created #Flawless for all of us on this journey of having healthy, nourished and nurtured hair. This is for those curious about my natural hair and needed proof it actually existed,” she posted on Instagram.



The product line, Flawless by Gabrielle Union, consists of ten products including shampoos and conditioners, edge control, shine spray, blow dry cream and heat protectant spray. The products contain a unique blend of argan, avocado and marula oils.


Not only is Union expanding in the hair care realm, she is also trying her hand in a line of clothing. She’s undeniably stylish, from her tv/movie roles to her everyday attire, Mrs. Union-Wade looks great in damn near everything. She partnered up with New York & Company as the new face of their 7th Ave collection. Her items are stylish, affordable, quality pieces for every woman.

“I want to bring a Gabrielle spin to New York & Company by adding a unique element of style to the office—chic jumpsuits in the boardroom, dramatic coats over suiting,” said Union.

Union says that this partnership is a “whole new game.” She added, “I am excited to work with a brand that’s known for embracing diversity and that caters specifically to women — especially women who want to look on-point without breaking the bank. I can’t wait to show everyone what I’ve been working on!”
 
Everything is $19, one item is $25 and the other is $29. I don't see anything for styling.

eta: there is a blow dry cream, edge control, shine spray and a heat protection spray listed under styling. Where is the butter's Gabby?

Yeah, I was surprised in not seeing more natural hair products being she went natural at 25. But she mostly wears her hair straight.
Much rather have her skin care regime...lol
 
I clicked the link. The website is gorgeous and the product packaging is very attractive. There is an associated video and I clicked that.

The video of her shows the behind scenes process of her photo shoot of beautiful pictures that eventually ended up on the Flawless website- but with her wearing wigs. I don't understand that.

Also, there are no darker toned Black women represented in the video or on the website with kinkier hair and/or darker skin tones than Gabrielle. They are excluded as opposed to have been included, in the advertising for this line for 'textured' hair. I don't understand that either.

It looks like the marketing of the product is going the same route as Loreal's Carol Daughter in that they are marketing to 'textured hair' for a multi-ethnic type of consumer or consumers in various 'ethnic' groups who have 'textured' hair. It does not seem to be a product line geared exclusively toward Black women with afro-textured hair.

I will add, it is a lot easier to sit back and criticize and do nothing, which is what I am doing. It is much more difficult to get out there and do something, which is what she is doing ! I respect and admire that.

@Chicoro I made the same observations you did. It seems when advertising is involved multiracial aesthetic is the go to choice even when the owner/head representative is black. Very unfortunate!!!

If you based black westerners off of media/ advertising you'd think most black people(mainly bw) are ambiguous looking.
As for the wig....this was her opportunity to showcase her hair. I don't understand her.

I am not complaining but Gabby is not starting on the right foot with this one.

I am going to write to her company as feedback.

yeah there is nothing impressive about her hair.
now her face? yes :lol: she looks remarkable for her age. i wonder why she chose the hair route when she isn't lauded for her hair
just seems as if she wanted something easy. at least if she came out with skin care it would seem more sincere.
 
I'm not impressed with this at all. I don't wear my hair straight. I'm not her target audience as evidenced by the type of marketing and products offered. I'm perplexed she decided to do a hairline at all considering she doesn't wear her own hair out. She would have been better off developing a wig or weave line. Maybe the products could be used to style wigs or weaves.
 
If you only show your real hair once every blue moon, why would I want to buy your hair products? Honestly, the only photo I've ever seen of her real hair was some blurry pic floating around the internet. If you don't have enough confidence to showcase your hair...well, I don't have any confidence in your hair products!

@Chicoro I completely agree with your assessment. With how well hair care lines marketed towards natural hair care are doing. She has plenty of examples she could've copied i.e. Carols Daughter, Jane Carter, Shea Moisture. I was disappointed that she went the cookie-cutter route. But we will see..
