Fun with buns

Okay...that may not have sounded right...

Here are a few ways to dress up your bun, ladies! I'm going on the one-year bun challenge too (consists of keeping my hair in a bun as a protective style to see how much length I keep).

Bun cages: Put your hair in a bun and slip the "cage" on top and then put the pin through the "cage" to secure it in place. You can put the pin in horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Fancy bun cages: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/rhinestonejewelry/buncovwhol.html

Plain bun cages: http://mp.hairboutique.com/list.asp?CtgID=181

Chopsticks: Stick these in the perimeter of your bun or chignon for added style

Hair pins These can be placed anywhere

Ponytail holders: They need not be doudy and boring.

Floating Jewels: Though a little tricky to put in, use these to make a design in your hair or draw the eye to your bun.

Beaded hair strings: Draped from a bun (above, to the side, or beneath), these hang lovely

Those fancy cages are so pretty too!

Oh, maybe you should start a one year bun challenge for everyone here. It would be interesting to see the results.

They also need not be too expensive. These are really cute, but some of them...what are these people thinking? $20.00??

Don't be afraid to check out your nearest dollar store. You'll find similar styles and you can always get some rhinestones and dress up your own accessories

Now everybody get your bun on! lol

lol. Yeah, I know. I was going more for pictures than price. $20.00 for some elastic sure isn't gonna happen on my wallet.

For cheaper bun cages, (I also posted this in another post) you can find them at Claire's. They may still sell them. You can find a Claire's in most malls.

umm...what's so great about keeping your hair in a bun? isn't all that pulling on your roots bad for your hair?

Chuli: If your bun (or ponytail) is pulling on the roots of your hair, it's too tight. It should be so comfortable that you can barely feel it. Placing the bun at different angles and heights will also put less stress on the hair than always having it in the same place.

Also, the great thing about wearing your hair in a bun is that it keeps the ends out of the air so they don't become dry. Several people have achieved over 6 inches a year from wearing buns.

It keeps your fingers out of your hair so that there is less manipulation. Grass doesn't grow on busy streets.

Here is another link to bun covers.

Hi Chuli

Welcome to the board.
Well, you shouldn't pull your hair too tight for sure, that goes with any hairstyle. But I think most people have hair problems because of damage to their ends, and buns protect the ends. For the most part it seems people are having a lot of success with buns and other protective dos.

Boadicea, I like the plain bun cages that you posted from hairboutique.com - and the price is right too.

I've had good experiences purchasing from them. I guess because I almost never wear my hair down, I'm on the "bun challenge" too.

Pulling tight on your roots is definitely not good all the time. I for one...I don't keep my bun up all week, I take my bun down everyday, moiturize and put it back up in the morning..gives the roots a little breather....plus castor oil and vitamin e will protect the roots just in case you happen to pull the hair too tight.....I put it on my roots nightly and in the morning.

Aha! I went to the mall today and found some plain bun cages (plain plastic and ones with tortise shell designs) at Claire's for $4.50 I also bought some hair chopsticks for $4.50 (I got them half off)

If you can find a Claire's near you, they're having a hair accesories sale: Buy one get one free or half off!

They had plain round cages, butterfly designs, swirls, etc.

I wonder if that's the same lady I read about who did the bun challenge and her hair grew 9 inches in a year.....That's what prompted me to do it along with the fact that I love Conditioner washes...

Thank you Boadicea for all the info! I too will be going to Claire's this weekend and a flea market. This is exactly what I need since I'm just learning how to put my hair in a bun!

I want it to look good every time.

And I want to join in the bun challenge but I also just learned how to put my hair in a beautiful French Roll - is that a different category?

Also, does anyone here watch or tape All My Children? For those of you who do, I really liked Bianca's and Kindall's (sp) updos for Erica's wedding. I want to try to duplicate it, just to see if I can do it.

This is a protective style and it looks like wavy hair is loosely gathered and rolled up along the sides towards the back and the back hair is loosely gathered low at the neck and rolled up. The hair is tucked in with pins holding it in place. It looks like a French Roll but in a different direction going horizontally across the back, low at the neck rather than sideways vertically in the back of the head. It looks very simple and elegant. Kindall put flowers along each side of her "bun" while Bianca left her's undecorated.

This is a great topic and I will definitely be checking out the bun cages and the chopsticks!!
