Frequent Washing

Sometimes when I'm bored, depressed, or not satisfied with the way my hair came out, I wash my hair. Do you think it's okay to wash your hair even if you just did so the day before? I've done it in the past but was wondering how much I might be harming my hair.

I want to get my air-drying regime down, I also want to try this other conditioner and I don't like the way my hair came out yesterday so.....basically I want to wah my hair AGAIN!

What do you think? Or should I just wait until tomorrow-----

Hey--I might even wash my hair three days in a row...I have a lot of experimentation to do. It;s easier to do when the memory of how your hair came out is still fresh in your head.

I do all the time. I usually do a conditioner wash or a lemon rinse(with distilled water). Unless there was a product buildup then I'll coat the length with conditoner then shampoo lightly.

Do you think it's comparable to c/o washing since the shampoo is more drying?

Okay...I think I'll coat the length with conditioner or oil before just to be on the safe side. But then that will be changing the variables....I want to do everything the same except for the conditioner.

I don't know...so many experiments...so little time... /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

I wash my hair everyday also I usually wash with creme of nature shampoo once a week and the other 6 days I do conditioner washes. I havent had any problems with my hair washing every day. Oh I also put glycerin in my conditioner because it helps the conditioner to make a suds like shampoo does and it moisturizes my hair. My comb out is easier too! You should try it sometime.

Thanks carmella. I also wash with Creme of Nature (yellow/green) but in this case I wanted to know if it was safe to wash two more days in a row with it since that is what I did yesterday.

Glycerin? I will definitely try that one day becasue I know that glycerin is needed to make bubbles. Thanks for the tip. I never thought to apply it to hair.

Davine I too have exactly the same for the same reasons you expressed. I have not noticed any negative side effects..ie drying, breakage.... I think as long as you're not doing anything with heavy protein, you should be good to go.

I think I will try to add glycerine to my conditioner for conditioner washes. I still have a tangling issue, so maybe this could help.

Hi Daviine,

Lately I've been washing my hair a lot more frequently than every 3 days. Some times I'll wash my hair every day for 3 or 4 days, and I haven't experienced any problems at all. I always use shampoo, either cream of nature, (the green and yellow bottle for dry/damaged hair), or Nexxus Botanoil Shampoo. I have no complaints. If anything, my hair looks healthier. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Pebbles...that's all I needed to hear, especially since we use the same shampoo). Do you still have the old version girl in the yellow bottle with green writing or did you mean yellow, green, and white?

Thanks everyone for your responses!!!

I believe you can wash your hair three times a week without penalty. One of the biggest myths is that washing your hair takes away the moisterizer and natural oils. Water is a moisterizer. I wouldn't recommend back to back.

I try to wash my hair every single day, and I can't say enough about how frequent washing has positively impacted my hair.

+ prevents split ends
+ brings out the hair's natural sheen
+ safer detangling
+ no more macro flakes
+ hair is more fluffy, healthy and supple than any shampoo or conditioner could ever make it
+ faster and healthier growth

I've always preached that moisture is the key. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Daviine,

I mean the yellow, green and white bottle. It's great, and I've found that I can use it frequently with no problems. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanx Allandra. I love all the changes around here; every time I come back, LHCF is all the better of a community! /images/graemlins/clap.gif

I definately think frequent washing is alright, if you are using the right shampoo and conditioner that will not dry out your hair. I think frequent washing should be based on the shampoo you choose. Personally for frequent washing, I would choose a creamy shampoo with no sulfates( Lanza protein plus), despite the name, this shampoo does not dry out your hair. And the consistency is not like your normal sudsy/soapy shampoo, it is actually creamy/milky.

You hit the nail right on the head. I go into the shower with frazzles, and come out with absolutely gorgeous locks. Nothin' but water!

I do that a lot. I'm always experimenting and sometimes things don't work out. If my hair is unusually tangled or the texture just doesn't seem right, I will shampoo/cond. the next day to get it right.

i guess i never considered washing my hair more than once a week because i never knew what to do with my hair afterwards. i usually rollerset so to do that everyday would be time consuming. also because i switched from no lye to lye i still have no lye parts that arent as sleek and the only solution for my hair would be to put it in a bun after i wash it. what do people do to their hair afterwards if you wash that frequent? God bless you all.

i wash thrice a week. if i have to go out immediately after washing thats cool. all i do is towel blot dry and add moisturisers and then part my hair in two and ,make 2 low smooth and sleek ponytails and twist and style (and add a lot of moisturisers and hair polish) the tails (ends), very cute. by the time i get back in my hair is dry and i can rollerset if i want or keep my wavy ends. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi azul11, I alternate my hairstyles between washings. I wash my hair almost everyday. I wear my hair in a protective style one day and let my hair airdry in a ponytail or w/ my hair laying down and gathered together in the back w/ a hair pen. Then sometimes I let my hair airday during the night, and use my caruso rollers to roll my hair in the morning. I love these things /images/graemlins/grin.gif I also have the lye and no lye difference in my hair. I haven't had any problems at all w/ the frequent washings. As a matter of fact, I think it has helped my different textures. Currently, I'm dealing w/ three!! My new growth, my lye, and my no lye textures. I still haven't had any problems. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Daviine,

Before finding this board, I thought it would be drying to wash my hair daily and 'strip' it of its natural oils etc but I've now found that I can do it daily if I do conditioner only washes. There are some girls here though that encorporate using a mild moisturizing shampoo which is also a really good idea.

I just air dry the hair too which makes a big difference. If I washed daily and followed by rollarsetting and 1 hour under a dryer then that I would find excessive but if your using moisturizing products and air drying after then I think that would be a healthy way to clean the hair. (And of course, that s-curl activator does wonders for retaining moisture). Dang, I have to stop mentioning this product /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yep /images/graemlins/smile.gif I think it's OK to wash 2 days in a row. I do the same thing, if I'm not feeling my hair then I wash it. I dyed it black on Monday but I think the colour was a tad too rich so I washed it again yesterday hoping it'd fade a lil, which it did. If I have a bad hair day or something, I much prefer to wash my hair and start over again.

I airdry with moisturisers on my hair. A lil like how Pandora does hers, just in a ponytail.

Like the other ladies here, I wash 3 times per week. I workout, so any less than 3 times is not an option for me.

After I wash, I either slick my hair straight back into a ponytail with Infusium 23 and a little Elasta QP Feels Like Silk (love it). From there I braid or twist the tail and go to sleep. When I wake up, I have a wavy ponytail.

Or, like Pandora, if its during the day that I wash, I part my hair while wet (side part), and make 2 low ponytails. I will leave the haouse like that.

HA!! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif THAT's an understatement!!! IMPOSSIBLE, is more like it /images/graemlins/smile.gif /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sure, I use to do that all the time. I did this last summer when I first found this board. I would re-shampoo if I didn't like the product I used in my hair or I would just re-wet, pin-up and go - alot, this really helped my hair.

Now I shampoo twice a week, my hair is beyond nape length with that no-lye and lye thing going on. I have been roller setting on small rollers, finger combing and letting my curls wear out as the week goes. The longest they last is 4 days, by then it's time to shampoo and reset. This is very time consuming when you are tired. But I want to do more more conditioner washes during the summer, so I plan on finding a simplier style.

I think frequent washing doesn't have to be a problem if you follow with a moisturizing conditoner afterwards. Sometimes, I will wash my hair twice in one day if a particulare hairstlye doesn't turn out right or if I recently gave into "PJ-itis" and have to try something out.

[/ QUOTE ] It's fairly easy for me. I have a TWA (although it has grown out so much I won't be able to call it that soon!), and I just go.

You know the way white ladies can just shower, then they get out, let it dry throughout the day and their hair looks fine? Black hair is like that too.

You know the way white ladies can just shower, then they get out, let it dry throughout the day and their hair looks fine? Black hair is like that too I wasnt aware of that! The only way i know how to make my hair presentable is by using heat or some product or else my hair gets really frizzy . aZULL 11 how can I keep that from occuring?

The reason why most black people think frequent washing is a bad thing is because of what they do after they wash. The average person that doesn't have the knowledge gained from this board would wash-blowdry-curl (maybe even not use conditioner...the horror
shocked.gif
) but we know better and if you're washing, conditioning, and airdrying/setting I would say everything will be PURRRFECT!!!

In fact I'm thinking about starting this practice next week, an every other day wash w/ my patented scarf dry method!!!
