Does anyone do free flow highlites as in just with a comb or your fingers instead of foil or a cap? This seems like a simple, easy to touch up way to do it at home. What do you think?
There is a process like that called baliage. Basically the comb or brush is dipped in the paint. And the highlights are placed in a free-form, abstract way over the surface of the hair. It is supposed to give a much more subtle look because the highlights are fewer and placed more randomly. The grow out process is also easier, because you are not placing the color all the way up to the roots to begin with. But according to one site I was reading, the results can be very spotty if they aren't done correctly.
This link goes through the highlighting process and she uses cotton instead of foil or caps.
Edited to add: I just checked the link and it's not working. But the website is www.ivillage.com. The name of the article is Master Class with Patty Slattery: Highlighting at Home. I can't post the article because they have pictures and I don't know how to do that yet. Sorry.
