How do you protect those highlites?

Does anyone here have permanent color and highlites. I know. Bad bad but I am curious about this...If you have permanent color, when you do the retouches on the new growth, don't you run the rest through the rest of your hair for a few minutes to "refresh it." At least that's what I read was the proper procedure. However, if you have highlites as well, how do you prevent them for being covered over? Could you use foil or something to protect them?
