I agree that not everybody hair grows long when their a child, my hair didn't grow that long either as a child but like I said before it was growing when I was 15 and went to the hairdresser every three weeks and JUST used Isoplus oil sheen. But when we're children our hair doesn't get the best hair care either. It's still getting maniuplated mostly by the straightening comb.

This is true, which is why I'm looking forward to seeing what my REAL growth rate is in the next few months!;)

I figure I can make adjustments to my current regimine from there.

I am trying to be positive that my hair would reach really long lenghts. I want my hair to at least be longer than shoulder lenght. My hair was always thick as a child. It would reach my shoulders. As an adult it would at least reach a little pass my shoulders in the back. My natural hair has some length. The back when stretched is pass my shoulders. I would love for my natural hair to reach bra strap. I plan on achieving this goal by wearing my hair in twists. I understand where the OP is coming from. It is nice to see someone who had similar struggles triumph. I also understand what the other poster is trying to say. Sometimes we think oh' I will never reach a certain hair lengh or that so and so always had long hair so why should I compare myself to her.

My hair was terribly short and broken as a child. At one point, the back had completely rubbed out. I used to pull my ponytail so super tight- just to get as much length as I could to make the ponytail worth something. People thought my eyes were naturally slanted. My cousins used to get together and laugh at me and my hair. I would laugh along with them, but end up crying when I was alone. That stuff hurt for a long time. It was so bad, and I thought that was how it was meant to be since that was how it always was. I am so thankful for the hairboards though-- without them, I would still be that same little girl praying for healthy, longer hair. Looking back, I am glad I went through that because I wouldn't appreciate the length I've gained nearly as much.:yep: Those people who laughed at me to the point I was in tears are watching my hair grow by leaps and bounds and I've surpassed every single one of them.:)
Now, its all about seeing how far I can go. Genetics is not particularly on my side but that hasn't discouraged me or stopped me from growing to each goal I've set. I am interested to see what is within my own potential.

Sistaslick - You are one of my hair inspirations. In fact, your progress pictures were the ones that convinced me that I needed to join this board so I could make sure that I could get all the passwords in profiles!

Thanks to all the ladies for sharing. As FlyyGyrl was saying, there ARE a lot of women who have had medium-long hair and have grown it crazily, and I DON'T TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM THEM - but I get a special rush from finding the women who have gone from "never ever" to "no, it's not a weave" lengths and with healthy hair too. 'Cause that is what I hope for myself one day.

I still and will always feel that obtaining long hair is strictly dependent on genes. I will never get to waist length.(Not that it was even my plan) That I know for sure.

But when I was 15, all I did was use Isoplus oil sheen and go to the hairdresser every three weeks. ALL I used was Isoplus, now I hear that stuff is bad to use on your hair. And I hear your suppose to wash your hair more than every three weeks. So I don't understand why my hair was growing then.
Well, that's my point! All you did was use Isoplus and your hair grew, right? You didn't know it was bad back then and did it seem bad to you? For you, your hair grew with that product, so for YOU it is not bad. Just because you read about what so-and-so on the board uses and what supposedly is "bad" for the hair doesn't mean you have to follow that advise. For you, you have already seem what works for your hair. I rarely follow anyone's regimes because I know what makes my hair happy. I read some things, if it sounds intersting I might try it, but generally my hair care is tailored to my hair not copied from someone elses regime that was probably tailored for their hair! (My regime is NO regime, because they don't work for me. I wash and air dry and use a very minimal amount of product in my hair.)
You don't understand why your hair was growing? I do. Because what you were doing worked for your hair. THAT is what is important here; finding what works for YOUR hair because there is no blanket treatment for all of our hair.

Sistaslick!!!!!!!! You are one of my hair inspirations! You are one of the reasons I joined the board as well. Thanks for the story and I really appreciate it and it really gives me encouragement.

As a child my hair was mid-back length, when I started taking care of my own hair thats when it went downhill, my hair remained at shoulder length (which I dont consider to be short) even though I wasnt properly taking care of it. Once I started implementing the knowledge I gained from hair boards thats when my hair started to thrive, and thats when I became motivated toward reaching my hair goals. I dont think that genes alone will ultimately determine how long one's hair will grow, its a combination of genes and proper hair care IMO.

I have the same story. Long hair as a child, broke off with my first relaxer and when I started taking care of it, and I'm trying to grow it back.

ITA about the GENES and proper care. I think that we might all be able to grow our hair to waist length. It's just that some of us might get their before others and some of us might require more care to retain that length.

thanks y'all. Shoooo, I wish I could share a long hair childhood story-- but it just ain't there. Mine is gonna definitely have to be a "rags to riches" story at the end of the day:lol:

Well I hope to have a "rags to riches" story too in the very near future. Sistaslick you are one of my biggest inspirations ;)

I think that is soooo important. You can look at other people's routines for ideas, but you really have to figure out what works for YOUR hair.

I think a lot of black women are so worried about their hair being straight or having a cute style, that they really don't focus on finding out what keeps their hair healthy. The main thing that hairboards have taught me is to pay attention to my hair and to give it what it needs.

My hair was never longer than shoulder length before LHCF. I did the big chop almost three years ago and my hair is now almost armpit. For me, braids have been the key. My hair grows fairly fast, but it doesn't tolerate manipulation, heat, color, or frequent relaxers well. But there are lots of women here who have had horrible experiences with braids and who can use heat regularly.

Me too! I almost teared up reading it because this sounds EXACTLY like it was with me and I was teased too. I'm starting to surpass them too!

No, I didn't always have long hair. In fact, I cut my hair to a teenie afro 2 times in my life - at 15 and at 24. I'm talking an inch long.
My hair can easily grow to about bra strap though, but getting it longer than that...isn't easy!
It takes good care and regular trims for my hair to grow at all. And remember, I've always been natural and never used heat more than once or twice a year throughout my life. I believe that is why my hair grows quickly to a certain length.

I had what would be BSL length as a little girl in the 1st or 2nd grade. My hair was always pressed. Then I got my first relaxer and my hair did break a little, and the stylist chopped it to my shoulder or above. Since then (approximately 8 years old) my hair hasn't been shorter than 3 inches below the shoulders...that was due to an overprocessing incident in 2002. However I maintained my hair at the same length for a couple years by constantly trimming it...I decided to grow it a lot longer last March. I don't really have a rags to riches story.:ohwell:

My hair has always been mid length or longer all my life. In highschool I would experiment alot and I paid dearly. I took my hair for granted when I started putting permanent colors in it and it would break off. People have always admired my hair, not necessarily the length but the thickness, I do have a whole lot of hair! I'm glad that I joined this forum because now I know how to handle my thick hair and I can grow it out to my dream length (waistlength and beyond).

well i don't have a rags to riches story either, more like the other way around. From age 4-10 i was natural and my hair with shrinkage was BSL and mother washed, conditioned and braided it every week. She got arthritis when i entered 10th grade and decided to relax it to manage it better it was at this time a little past BSL. Then in sixth grade i started to do my own hair and it went to shoulder length real quick lol i constantly put it into tight ponytails and pressed it very often. Later on in 7th grade that summer i started transitioning and i did a BC in the summer of 2004. I cut more than just the relaxed hair so it was ear-length. I cut another 5in off in April 2005 so i went from 3in past shoulders to jaw length or sumthing like that. Then i grew it out again to shoulder length and of course i cut it again to about a lil past jaw length and now i'm growing my hair out again.... i refuse to cut it!!! But right now it's about maybe (i'm guessing) an inch from shoulder length (straightened) hopefully by the end of the summer after i keep my hair braided it'll be past shoulder length again.

Well what helped you acheive your beautiful hair?

Sorry I missed this. There are a couple things that helped my hair grow. First I cut out all direct heat for the first 6 months I started focusing on hair care. Since I cut out direct heat I opted to wear protective styles. I wore braids and a bun from March 04 until Sept 04. Then I put myself on a protective styles challenge for 1 entire year. I wore a bun or french twist for 95% of the time from Sept 04 until Aug 31 05. I made my weekly regimin very simple. ( Wash every three days, deep condition every time I washed and airdry in a protective style.) Deep conditioning and washing more often really helped keep my hair moisturized and protective styles helped me keep the growth I was getting.

Oh, one more thing, my hair tends to be dry so I moisturize twice daily. This has saved my ends.

HTH

Hmmm... I beg to differ. Looking at the health of your hair in your pics and the progress, I bet you could reach waist length if that's what you wanted. Have you ever seen Adrienne0914's album? Her album spans several years starting with hair about the length that your progress pics start at and she is now a waist length chic. :)

Thanks for sharing this Sistaslick, what an inspiration you are (besides being one of my great hair inspirations!)! You proved that genetics need not be an obstacle for anyone. It's all about intention.

I have always had long hair as a child but it has never reached shoulder length. My hair is past shoulder length now. My goal is to reach bra strap hopefully this summer 06'. Lauren 450 your hair looks wonderful. Your hair grew really fast within 9 months. I hope my hair will do that.
