I notice a lot of you ladies have long hair but what I want to know is, did you always have long hair? I don't want to follow the regimen of someone who have always had long hair. Is there anyone out here that got long hair because of their current regimen?

most of us didn't always have long hair. That's what led to the creation of these boards in the first place.
I always had short-medium hair. I grew it out long with the advice of hairboards, fell victim to an incompetent stylist and ended up with shorter than ever hair, and now am on the way to long again.

I still and will always feel that obtaining long hair is strictly dependent on genes. I will never get to waist length.(Not that it was even my plan) That I know for sure.

My hair is the length of your first picture in the collage. There was a time when my hair was the length of your recent pic. I was 15 and didn't do nearly the things I do now. So I don't understand why my hair was long when I was younger.

Wow, great progress!

Wow, thats great progress. You look like you on the road to waistlength!

I really don't consider my hair as long...but growing up, it has always been bra strap...especially when my mother was taking care of it....then I got a hold of it........eh....

your hair looks beautiful!

As for me, my hair has really been up and down since about junior high (when I discovered chemicals, curling irons, gel and hair dyes). When I was younger, it was still up and down but it was always past shoulder and as long as BSL (or undershirt length. lol :lachen: ). It really just depended on whether or not my mom got lucky- she knew nothing about hair.

My hair has always been no shorter than shoulder length. The reason it's the length it is now is because I've been going to the hair dresser regulary (every 2 weeks) since I was 13. If I had been doing my hair myself, I shudder at the the thought of what it would look like now. Since joining this forum I've started to shampoo my own hair (something I never knew how to do) but I still go to the hairdresser as often as I can afford.

As a child my hair was mid-back length, when I started taking care of my own hair thats when it went downhill, my hair remained at shoulder length (which I dont consider to be short) even though I wasnt properly taking care of it. Once I started implementing the knowledge I gained from hair boards thats when my hair started to thrive, and thats when I became motivated toward reaching my hair goals. I dont think that genes alone will ultimately determine how long one's hair will grow, its a combination of genes and proper hair care IMO.

Maybe that's the key for your hair. Maybe it doesn't like a lot of manipulation, I know mine doesn't. All these complicated routines and regimes do not work for my hair; the less I do to it, the more it thrives.

But when I was 15, all I did was use Isoplus oil sheen and go to the hairdresser every three weeks. ALL I used was Isoplus, now I hear that stuff is bad to use on your hair. And I hear your suppose to wash your hair more than every three weeks. So I don't understand why my hair was growing then.

Some people can do lots of stuff to their hair with little to no problems.
Also, if all you did was get it washed every 3 weeks and spray with isoplus, the fact that you never manipulated it was probably a key factor in growth. For many people using heat every few days (or every day) was a major issue in breakage and short hair.

Baha, I would be careful to base determination of your own hair goals on the experiences of others. Why assume that your hair will not or cannot grow longer than it ever has before? Our bodies are CONSTANTLY regenerating cellular and chemical functions. You are working with new sets of cells every year. The genes are the same but your cellular functionality can be either improved or degenerated depending on health practices. Don't underestimate the body's ability to IMPROVE upon itself.

Um. What does that have to do with me not wanting to follow the regimen of someone who have always had long hair?

I had long hair as a child and "BC'd" when I went natural (to ear length) in 2001. That was when I noticed that it was getting hard to grow my hair back to where it was before. My regimen has helped me a lot and now it is healthier and longer than before I cut my hair. It is possible.

*eta: my natural journey lasted for 2 years, I decided to grow my hair out after that journey :)

UM. Because looking at what someone else is doing and basing our own goals and growth potential on it could very well limit whatever is already inherently within us to do. But, hey, if you prefer to make calculated decisions based moreso on what you see in others -- have at it. I was just sharing an alternative point of view. Forgive the offens;) e.

You never know hun. You just may reach waist length. Looks like your hair is growing pretty well (from looking at the progress pics in your signature). I wouldn't be surprised if it went to waist length (looks like you're taking GREAT care of your tresses).

I think this is a good question. Not because I don't think someone who has always had short hair (aka ME) can't reach great lengths (otherwise I woudn't be on this board!;)), but because very different things have been going on with those who used to have long hair and those who are trying to achieve it for the first time ever.

Having life experiences that messes your hair up, is different from never having seen your natural hair long in the first place. Lots of people here have pictures of when they were girls and their hair is flowing down their back... I was not one of those children.

It would be great for the morale of some of us shorter haired ladies to see someone go from ear/chin/top of neck length to bra strap who'd never gotten their hair that long before ever. I would like to see more of those stories on this board.

And hopefully, prayerfully I'll be one of them in a couple of years or so!

Have faith!:D

I believe that all people can grow hair down their back when it's in it's natural state. For example when Black people get locs, their hair grow down their backs. Mainly because there is no maniuplation. But when we perm our hair, no matter how much you take care of it, it's hard to achieve long hair for some.

I've always had very long hair as a child. My hair's been cut a few times, )neck length, halle berry cut, shoulder length bob) but it always grew back rapidly. A lot of people would say that I don't treat my hair well but my hair can withstand what others can't.
On the other hand, I have a girlfriend who's never had long hair. Her hair never grew past neck length and now it grows past bra-strap. She wasn't doing anything special other than just washing once every two weeks, blow-dry, flat-iron and wrap. All I told her to do was use a reconstructor and her hair flourished. Her problem was, her hair is extremely fine so it got damaged easily. So even if you've never had long hair as a kid, you still don't know if you can have it as an adult. maybe your regimen as a kid was not the best for your hair type.
I remember when i was about 9 years old I went to spend the summer in the country with my grandmother. At that time, I was washing my hair maybe once a month because it was so thick and long and too much to handle(About waist length braided. and I'm one of those people who has major shrikage with natural hair).
My grandmother washed my hair once a week with okra leaves and braided it into tiny boxed braids. then the next weekend she'd take out the braids, wash it again and braid it up. It was a very painful experience but when the summer was over, my hair had grown by leaps and bound. Needless to say my mom wasn't too happy about that! :)
My point is no matter how genetically predisposed you are to have long hair, if you're not taking good care of it, it won't grow to it's maximum potential.

I agree. It is a morale booster to see someone with very short hair achieve great lengths. It makes you feel that you can do the same, compared to someone who always had length. Especially so if they have pictures starting when it was short. I know when i look at pics, that is the first thing that I look for.:)

I always had shoulder length hair.Bushy full hair runs in my family. However I abused it over the years from weaves,bleaching/streaks,heat..ect.

However when I incorporated simple hair care rules my hair thrived and is growing towards waist length.:D .

I owe this to hair care boards.

I agree that not everybody hair grows long when their a child, my hair didn't grow that long either as a child but like I said before it was growing when I was 15 and went to the hairdresser every three weeks and JUST used Isoplus oil sheen. But when we're children our hair doesn't get the best hair care either. It's still getting maniuplated mostly by the straightening comb.

I've always had very thick hair but not what I consider long. In March 2003 I cut my hair to above shoulder length bob. I decided in Oct 03 to grow it out. Initally I just wanted it to be as long as it was before I cut it. When I joined LHCF in Jan 04 I was  at all the beautiful hair the ladies on the board were sporting. I decided then to focus on getting my hair healthy first. Once I did that I began to focus on the length. Here I am two years later on my way to mid back length, something I would have never though possible back in 03 when I started.

Hey Bahagirl. I totally understand how you feel. Alot of women on this board have gone from long hair to superlong hair and that is great. I salivate over their fotkis but it doesn't neccessarily make me feel like it is attainable for me since they were never in my position. I do feel that my goals are attainable though. If you are looking for inspiration from someone who did not have long hair from the jump, I would suggest you look at AJamericanDiva's pics. She is a great inspiration and she shows baby pics that prove she did not always have long hair. Here is a link http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=37059

ETA: Just thought of a good analogy. Its kind of like when ppl who have never had acne tell other ppl who have always had an acne problem how to get clear skin. Now these ppl who never had acne may do things to improve their skin but should the person who has had acne for a lifetime feel like their advice is good for them or will work for them? It may work or it may not, but I think anyone in that situation would rather take advice from someone that has been there. Thats all she is saying.
