For those who wears sew-in w/ out the traditional circular pattern

I was told many times that when you do a sew-in, braid your hair in rows verses the traditional circular pattern. I think this will give me better scratching access lol and will be easier for me to wash/moisturize my scalp. Problem is, I have no idea how to do this. Can someone explain in detail how I would do the rows? Straight back or what?
 
Yep, straight back, like how guys get their hair cornrowed. That's how I always braided my hair when I did my sew-ins...
