For those who do braidouts!!

Hello all!! Since I am transitioning, I want to wear braidouts as a style that will not require me to do too much manipulation to the hair. How do you ladies secure your ends though?? I know that rubber bands will break and damage my ends. Also how do you apply oils to the hair without leaving everything too oily?? Do you part and oil scalp only with fingers or a basting brush?? Lastly what oils do you ladies use for a pre-treatment before shampooing and how do you use them?? On wet hair?? Dry hair?? How long?? With heat?? I would appreciate any advice.

I have sum answers 4u

-I secure my braid out ends with a roller

-I have a "spout" bottle when applying oil to my newgrowth. For overall hair, I use a
"spray" bottle

-To keep from getting everything "oily", I: 1) apply oil to wet hair... for some reason, it doesn't dry too oily; 2) apply most of the oil to the "inner hair"... only apply a bit to the "outter" (top) hair. (hope that makes sense)

-When using a "spout" bottle, there's no need to part the hair nor apply with fingers/brush

-Pre-treatment oils: Castor, jojoba, avocado, olive, tea tree, my favorite Hot Six Oil (pour bottle)

- Basically, I warm the oil while in the spout bottle bottle, apply it, cover with a plastic cap for 15-30 mins, sometimes 3 or more hrs if time permits.

- I like both dry & wet hair for hot oil treatments.

HTH

Thanks Peach tree!!! I'll try rollers for the ends...do you use regular rollers or sponge and what size do you use?? I also never thought about using a spout bottle for the oils... makes sense though !!

Hi Honeydrop....Welcome to LHCF!

Check the How To's cross reference thread. There you can find some info about braidout how to's as well as some tips. Scroll to Peachtree braidout link once there in Peachtree's bio there should be a link to her pictures. HTH (hope that helps)!

Sweettrini, I use sponge roller, only cuz I can sleep in them if need be. I always wrap an end paper around the roller & the hair. This keeps the sponge from absorbing the much needed moisture from the hair. I would also sometimes "steam" the sponge roller... just another method to protect my ends.

I use the large sponge roller. Here's a link to my album where it's pictured (the sponge roller is in the middle...)

BTW, the "spout" bottle allows for a "no mess" application. It works great

If shrinkage is an issue, then try "twist outs". Here's pics of this style...

Peachtree,

You have such gorgeous hair! Your braidout came out really nice. I notice yours doesn't automatically fluff up at the roots either...the same issue I was having. But overall, yours looks really nice. I'm going to have to try your method and see if it works for me.

Thanks HairLove

That braid out was about 1 wk following my "bone straight" touch up. I couldn't get the scalp hair to "fluff" even if I tried.

I did another one in June... it turned out really nice cuz my new growth was nice & thick. I'm gonna try another one soon... i'm just a lil apprehensive cuz I don't wanna put any unnecessary stress on my "line", especially when doin' cornrows (or flat twists).... maybe i'll do it on dry hair

.... yep, that's what I'll do
