I've been relaxed for 20 years and thank God that I've never, ever had a bad experience. I have used so many different kinds that I'm not even sure to list anymore, but for the past year I've used Elasta QP professional lye relaxer (in the white tub). I think I'm building up tolerance to this one, as for the last several applications have given me more texturized look than bone straight. This is not uncommon for me when I continuosly use one kind. Not sure what is next, but the absolute best relaxer I've ever had was Mizani.

So have I. Now I stick with Mizani and I will keep relaxing forever.

When I first began getting relaxers (it was either Vitar or Motions) at the age of 8, almost all of my hair broke off to about 2-3 inches.

That was a long time ago and with a whole lot of prayer and eventually finding this board, my hair is now at the middle of bra-strap!

Now my hair is in good condition with Affirm mild and as long as I continue to relax Affirm is the only relaxer system I am willing to use. However, I really don't think I will have a relaxer for the rest of my life. For now I'm spacing them as far apart as possible.

Since I have graduated from college...........started working my experience has been wonderful:). My stylist use Design Essentials and it has performed miraculous things for my hair. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

I got my first perm at the tender age of 7............by the time I was 9 it had broken off so bad that it had to be cut off and replaced with a jheri curl............this was in 1989 the curl was played out. By the time I was in middleschool, I had begged and pleaded for a relaxer to fit in and I had hair problems on and off during both high school and college. But everything changed when I graduated from college and could afford to see a stylist more often

Re: For Current and Former Users of Relaxers! (Pol

I received my first relaxer when I was in college, a freshman, believe. My dear mother applied it. What a disaster! As she allowed the relaxer to grow out, she resumed pressing my hair with a straightening comb - a technique she had used on my hair since I was about two years old.

I received my first professional relaxer at age 22, in November 1987. I don't recall which brand of relaxer it was. However, the stylist did a fair job. It was a White salon with a handful of Black clients. Actually, when this particular stylist became pregnant, I was shifted between two other stylists, including the salon owner. What a disaster! These two women nearly ruined my hair!

I once again allowed my mother to press it for a time, at which point I found a Black stylist by recommendation of a former colleague. That was in 1992. The stylist was great! At first, she used the Cream of Nature relaxer, and then changed me to the Dudley relaxer, which I wore for about four years, and without incident. I then relocated to Georgia in 1996, where the stylist there used the Motions relaxer. I really liked the Motions, which I wore for three years.

When I relocated to NY state in 1999, I patronized yet another White salon, with a fairly significant Black clientele. The stylist, who is Puerto Rican, did a fair job. However, I allowed him to apply a highlighting semi permanent color, which really dried out and damaged my hair. That was last year. I patronized this salon for about four years. When I discovered the LHCF, I began to notice things about my hair that I did not like, and in October 2003, I changed salons and stylists, and took my business to my local JC Penney salon. I think that this is the best care my hair has received since 1992. Honestly.

So, there's my relaxing history!

Hawaiian Silky = Excellent
Motions = Poor
Tones and Texture = ver poor

Over all my hair is in good condition, it is about the same as when it was natural. I think what makes the difference is that we take the time to care for our hair.

Excellent... probably because I don't use them more than twice (sometimes three times) a year, and only leave it on for 5-7 minutes.

I use design essentials, it does a good job on my hair! Of course I have my relaxers done by my stylist. She professionalizes in growing hair very long! Everytime I go get my hair done I see @ least 3 ladies w/ brastrap & longer hair!!!!

My experience has improved dramatically once I learned how to use them correctly. Before this everytime I used to relax I would pray that my hair wouldn't fall out. But now It's been smooth sailing especially since I started texlaxing. I've seen a big difference in my hairs health.

Mom pressed my hair when I was little: long hair down to my back
18 y/o 1st relaxer: Unknown brand at beauty shop: great results
Went broke and switched to Motions mild: ignorance was bliss
Switched to Mizani: loved it, hair waaaay more moisturized
Switched to Affirm: was ok but hair was a little drier than with Mizani
Back to Mizani: match made in heaven

My relaxing experience was good.. the onlllyyyy thing I hated was my hair never held a curl or anything.. no matter how much I tried... I used optimum care lye or if i went to the salon she used design essentials.....I'm done with relaxing tho... was fun while it lasted

Mizani relaxer is great. I NEVER get burn when i use it. I'm not sure because i stretch 3-4months or not. But i can leave it for up to 30 min.. and i dont get burn.

When i was relaxed I used:

Optimum Lye- most of the time- It left my hair hard and coated most of the time.

Mizani (not sure if it was lye or not)- I only got this when I went to the JC Penny salon.

Motions- The worst relaxer ever. Was always left underprocessed.

And then whatever the Dominicans relaxed my hair with that was a secret back then. They brought it out in a bowl and said that it was good relaxer.

I use Mizani mild or regular and I have had a pretty good experience. I used to use Motions and Silk Elements and I guess anything is a step up from Motions. SE was ok too.

Nairobi - regular
bone straight
heavy shedding/breakage
dry

Motions- sucked
any box relaxer - sucked

Honestly if I had experienced any excellent relaxers I'd still be relaxing.

I have had good experiences with relaxers generally. The only time I hated relaxers were when I used non-lye because they never got the hair straight enough. I will continue to use it until I can't maybe mid-40s. I have alternated between relaxers over the years; however, I have used for the last 2-3 years, Mizani Regular.

my favorite relaxer is influence because it got my hair bone straight and didn't burn my scalp causing me to rise up from the chair like the rest of them. It also allowed me to stretch a long time without needing one every 2 months.

I hated PCJ and African Pride, they both broke my hair off.

Other relaxers I've used were:

Designer Touch
Affirm
Motions
TCB
Pink Oil
Optimium

I've probably used more, I just can't think of them right now. But these are the main ones that was repeated. Over the last 24 years.

Forgot to add, that I'm completely natural now and haven't been since I was 4. So I'm loving it. I hope it's the Lord's will I continue this journey of being natural. The relaxers kept breaking my hair off.
