Hi Everyone!

Please take a vote whether you have had an overall good hair experience or bad hair experience with relaxers. I would like to see what everyone's experience with relaxers.
Then specifically indicate why it was good or why it was bad, what relaxer you use(d), and if you will discontinue or continue relaxing...

(I used the following many years ago. I only remember they were extra strong and would remove every curl/wave/coil in my hair.)

I've been using Revlon's Fabulaxer for the past 10 years, and I have no major complaints. My hair is pretty healthy.

When I was relaxed I used Affirm mild. I had no problems with it.

Overall good experience

Used Vitale Sensitive Scalp throughout most of my relaxed years. Never any damage and my hair grew nicely.

I don't remember what kind of relaxers I was getting before I found Vitale.

Bad relaxer experience (and last relaxer experience) was Aveda. My hair started falling out to less than 1/2 inch within 2 months. They should have been sued... There is something to say for trying something new. If it's not broken, don't try to fix it. I learned that the hard way.

Just for Me - fairly good. Hair got straight, but too straight -- I'd need a week's worth of new growth to have any body. Also, I was not retaining enough length (but i don't know if that was the perm or something else)

I haven't had a perm in a year and a half.

Mizani Sensitive Relaxer is the best I have ever used does not burn scalp and works with my dandruff shampoo.
Affirm burn my scalp every time.

Hair didn't break as much and used it for many years.
Not as bad as...

Just for Me -- NOT for me
No way this can be a kiddie relaxer!
It took so much of my hair out.... the relaxer bottle had more hair in it than I had on my head. Traumatized me for life when I was 14.

I still give it the evil eye when I pass it in stores.

I choose fair. Really should be Fair/Poor. My hair never grew beyond my shoulders (except once) and it always broke off. On top of that, it thinned out and I had never-ending dandruff that I could not get rid of no matter what product I used. The relaxers I've tried are:

Years ago, when I was a stupid teenager and relaxing my hair myself, I would use just about anything. Dark and Lovely, African Pride, etc. The results were mostly poor. I'm not sure if it was from the relaxers themselves or because I had no idea what I was doing. After a while, I said bump this and went natural for 4 yrs. and that was one of the best decisions I ever made. Since I've been relaxed again, I've been using Motions with good results. I have 4b hair that's a little past bra-strap. I will continue to relax for the forsee-able future.

Good experience when I use Affirm no-lye or sensitive scalp. I used affirm lye relaxer for my last retouch 9 weeks ago, and my scalp hated me for it. I am going to continue to relax, but I am stretching my relaxers to 12 or more weeks to prevent overlapping.

I used optimum care.. always gave me good results.. never really saw a problem with it..

Gentle Treatment, good results. Since I've learned more from this board like basing, stretching out my relaxer and how vital keeping my hair moisturized is, my results are even better.

overall i've had a good experience.
designer touch sensitive scalp relaxer(no-lye) made my hair dry and brittle.
affirm no-lye much better. hair was more moisturized and my scalp looked and felt healthier.
last retouch i used revlon mild(lye) bloody brilliant relaxer. the best yet. my hair feels so silky and it's not as flat as it usually is when i relax.

I've been relaxed for 20 years and thank God that I've never, ever had a bad experience. I have used so many different kinds that I'm not even sure to list anymore, but for the past year I've used Elasta QP professional lye relaxer (in the white tub). I think I'm building up tolerance to this one, as for the last several applications have given me more texturized look than bone straight. This is not uncommon for me when I continuosly use one kind. Not sure what is next, but the absolute best relaxer I've ever had was Mizani.

When I was relaxed, I used TCB Mild- Lye
I didn't have many problems. I rated it as fair mostly due to dryness...but I got that with all relaxers. My last relaxer was around Feb. 2003. I will never relax my hair again. I have MUCH more versatility with it being natural.

I wish I never had a relaxer but now I can't revert back to a press and comb because i sweat too much. Plus, relaxers are more conveniant, but hard on my hair

Aveda makes a relaxer?! Didn't know that, and it caused all that damage? That's a shame, some companies should stick to what they know.

My experience with relaxers were good up until last year when I went on meds. My very last relaxer in May was not good at all for me, since I experienced a lot of shedding and still am in the back of my head, although I can't blame it on the relaxer (probably the dye). I'm taking a break from them this summer.

My experience with relaxers have always been good. i have used hawaiian silky, fabulaxer (first one), optimum, dudleys sensitive scalp and now i use affirm sensitive. All of the above have been no-lye and regular strength.

When I relaxed I think I used Vitile (sp). I had a pretty good relaxing experience well besides the burning everyonce in a while. My hair never fell out from relaxing and to this day I don't know why that didn't happen, lol. But later on in my relaxing days I found websites like this to be very helpful in making my relaxed hair looking as healthy possible.

I voted fair. I am 4a/b currently texturized/relaxed. Fair because relaxers have led to substantial thinning due to shedding, I've had to cut my hair twice due to breakage, and to make them work I have to baby my hair to such an extend it's almost ridiculous. However my hair is now longer than ever and I love the texture so I will continue.

I've used Affirm sensitive scalp (bad), affirm mild (burns fast), mizani sensitive scalp (straightens great but very drying) and currently mizani mild.

My experience with Affirm relaxer was great up until about 18, after the birth of my son. Since then, it's been all down hill. The best would have to be Elasta QP sensitive scalp. I didn't have any breakage. The worst would have to be my most recent, Motions Oil. My hair is soooooo dry and brittle and I have not seen this much breakage since December or so. What was I thinking?

I have used others like Fabulaxer, African Pride, Designer Touch, Optimum Care...they were all fair. They were all better than motions but nothing to rave about. I just don't think my hair can handle relaxers...it's just too fine and fragile.

So far the best relaxer I've used has been the elasta qp regular

it left my hair with a slight wave
my hair seems more moisturized overall
no tangles
everything has been great so far
