Fine Hair Ladies!!!

I've finally come to accept my fine (4a) hair. I've always had really thick hair until I was put on multiple high blood pressure meds some years ago. I still have alot of hair so it took me a while to realize my strands had really thinned out.

I've been using AphoGHee protein trmt every 6 wks followed by a moisturizing deep conditioning. I try to moisturize regularly. I wash and deep conditon my hair every week. I oil and massage my scalp when I can remember to or when my scalp is itchy. I relax w/ Mizani for Fine Hair- tried Affirm Fiberguard and it made my hair so hard and tangled. I think apple cider vinegar washes helped me tremendously but, I strayed from them and may try one tomorrow.

Here's my problems:
1. Dry hair.
2. Moisturizers/ oils sit on my hair and don't seem to soak into the strands.
3. Breakage
4. Dull hair

I'm needed help from any of you with Healthy Fine hair. What should I change/ try?

When you deep condition, are you using a heat cap? That makes a big difference for me. How do you dry your hair, do you roller set or use a blow dryer?

Cookie the following is helping my hair:

Dryness: Steaming and Alter ego hot oil treatments
Moisturizers: Natural oils mixed with honey. Mostly conditioner washes, poo with porosity control shampoo (every other wash) followed with pc conditioner
Breakage: Henna - Jamila
Dull hair - coconut oil or jojoba oil
No heat for minimum 6 months-- until recently was getting heat after relaxers but I've decided to discontinue this also.

I have noticed a huge difference in the feel of my hair and finally starting to retain length. Pic on the left is Aug 2010 pic on the right is Jan 2011

@ DAK...Usually when I DC I use a plastic cap w/ heat but, I've been using the Hydracap lately. I use a blow dryer. Roller setting my own hair takes too long and I can never get it right.

@SWGPEC...Henna makes my hair really dry..I have the Alter Ego Garlic Cond. but will have to look into Hot Oil trmts..will use oils for now. I remember using coconut oil but can't remember results so will start that again..Maybe as a hot oil trmt???

thanks ladies...i will have to work on no heat cause my hair dont' like air drying...and it's not straight and and healthy looking like you guys so I have to flat iron it to get that look.

when i was relaxed, my stylist started using Nioxin Hair products, and i would do a hot oil treatment once a week. i stayed in rollers and rods. i would only get my hair wrapped and flat ironed once in a while. that helped to thicken my hair up a lot. now that i am natural, my hair appears to be a lot fuller and thicker, but it is still fine.

I only flat iron 3 times a month (once a week) and the other week i'll keep it pulled back or put a phony ponytail in. I wrap it too sometimes. How did you like the Nioxin products?

Excellent relaxer for fine hair....still leaves your hair textured...

I have fine hair and I do the following:

To retain moisture: I use Roux Porosity Control Conditioner and Corrector every time I wash my hair. I also do a home-grown steam treatment every time that I wash my hair.

To eliminate dull-looking hair: I apply avocado oil to my hair after I have detangled it. I always do this before I do the home-grown steam treatment. Additionally (in the summertime), I use the Jane Carter Solution Nourish and Shine (along with my twisting product) to give my hair some shine.

To stall breakage: I make sure that I keep a fair amount of protein in my diet. Also, I include protein during different parts of my haircare routine (DC and moisturizer). I also make sure that I am gentle and thorough during the detangling process. Lastly, I do not fuss with my hair a lot. After I wash my hair, I twist it for the week and I wear a twistout on the weekend.

I also have fine hair but I have benefited from weekly protein condish followed by moisture DCs. Also I use light oils such 100% Aryan oil, JBCO and Vatika oil on my hair. You can also attack it internally with regular Omega 3-6-9 intake along with MSM.

STEP AWAY FROM THE SHAMPOO!! LOL

shampoo makes the hair thinner...so if u cannot ditch it all at once try to alternate shampoo washes with cowashes - I started this yr cowashing and I love it and already see results

protein is important but also focus on consuming more protein internally!!

henna is a helper (I will be incorporating this in my reggie)
and JBCO helps as well (try a scalp massage atleast once a week)

I dont think shampoo makes the hair thinner. It may cause some drying depending on your hair and how it responds to certain ingredients. The dryness if not corrected with ur follow up conditioner and leave ins/moisturizers can lead to breakage which could contribute to thinning. If you wash, try diluting the shampoo and focus on your scalp. Let the suds from your scalp cleanse the rest of your hair as you rinse. If your hair is sensitive to sulfates try a sulfate free shampoo.

I agree w/Rain - I have fine hair as well and I always shampoo my hair. Some may consider it a necessary evil but it depends on the type you use and how often it's used - especially with chemically treated hair.

I don't moisturize or use any type of oils. I tend to wear my hair out/down and it doesn't take much to weigh my hair down. For the past 5-6 months I have been using L'oreal overnight treatment and on the nights before I shampoo (I shampoo in the morning) I use Alterna Overnight Treatment which requires to wash and condition the following morning.

I also use Mizani Butter Blends (luv it) and I don't use any heat, I only rollerset my hair. I use protein every week (followed up with moisturizing conditioner) Aphogee may be a little harsh if your hair doesn't really need it...I use Joico K-Pak, Nexxus Keraphix, Aphogee 2 minute,Alter ego, etc for protein and Nexxus Humectress, Origins, L'occitane, Moisture Maniac, etc. for moisture.

I have fine hair and I notice that it breaks much more when its weighed down with heavy oils and/or coated with product buildup. I use Joico K-pak line almost exclusively, shampoo, reconstructor and the moisture recovery conditioner, and it has dramatically reduced breakage and gave my fine hair some thickness. For a light moisturizer I use EV coconut oil or Joico's color therapy styling oil and it really gives a lot of shine too. I dont use a blowdryer, that may be the cause of your breakage and dullness. I rollerset/wrap or airdry/flatiron once a week

Nexus Emergencee works for me to stop breakage. For dryness, deep condition with a nice thick hydrating conditioner mixed with coconut milk, coconut oil, olive oil and honey. Aussie moist as a leave in. When hair feels a little dry, vegetable glycerin, water and coconut oil combo.

Mizan BB for fine hair is what I use..I get it from bluebeez. Yes, you have to do some deep conditioning.. It really helps..Last night i did one and a ACV rinse afterwards and my hair is so shiny and softer than it was..

After reading a couple of threads on the Roux PC I've decided to buy some. I will be buying it this week and touching up so we'll see what happens.
Additionally (in the summertime), I use the Jane Carter Solution Nourish and Shine (along with my twisting product) to give my hair some shine. I do use the Nourish and Shine also..sometimes I forget about it b/c I have so much product..

I'm doing a hardcore protein trmt every 6 wks and it seems to be helping w/ strengthening my hair and I DC after each one. I'm eating more protein as I'm working out w/ weights and taking a multivitamin/biotin.

Thanks, I've been using Joico k pak weekly so it seems to be helping also.

I do agree w/ consuming more proteing in my diet which I've started doing recently.

I don't think shampooing is a problem. I just use the ones that work best for me...Mizani Puriphying, AphoGhee Moisture, and some others that provide moisture and don't leave my hair feeling stripped..I can't use sulfate free ones cause they leave my hair hard and those bar shampoo's do also.

I use Mizani BB also and it's best on my hair. I can't get the whole rollersetting thing down...I don't think I have the patience but, I use Joico K Pak weekly w/ a moisturizing conditioner. Aphoghee 2 step every 6 weeks is helping alot. My hair dont' seem to care for Alter Ego but, i will give it another try.

I agree w/ the heavy stuff weighing me down..I'm thinking I don't need to moisturize so much and if I do i'll wash more b/c I get buildup quick. I love Joico Kpak and will have to leave the heavy creams along (Olive oil moisturizer etc.) and stick w/ the lighter oils.

I will play around w/ how I deep condition too but, I've been hearing alot about this Nexus Emergencee so I'll have to try it. Is it a protein conditioner?

To all of my LHCF ladies, I really appreciate you guys chiming in to help me. I'm going to be sure to get the Roux PC this week because I believe it will help eliminate most of my problems (dryness, stiff hair, dull look). This is why, yesterday I washed my hair (Fructis triple nutrition), conditioned for about 5 mins. w/ Joico (knockoff from Sallys), deep conditioned w/ Ulta's Moisture Conditioner w/ my HydraCap while I got my cardio workout on. Then I did an ACV rinse and applied my Profectiv Growth Oil. Girls!!! As I blowdryed my hair (for the first time on a med. heat setting) it was instantly shiny and lively again. I was so happy I could cry. I had gotten away from my ACV rinses ( actually forgotten about them). That makes me think I have more porosity issues than anything which is causing the other problems. I work out alot so I can't wear my hair down like I like to but my ponytail is so smooth. I'm going to work on using less or no heavy products that weigh my hair down...I will continue my Aphoghee 2 step trmts every 6wks..my Joico K Pak every week followed by a DC sealed w/ Castor Oil ( which I did yesterday also). After I do my touch up next week I may even do a hot oil trmt..I will at some point go to youtube to watch a rollersetting video and attempt doing them again. Thanks for all of the great suggestions!!!:spinning:

i loved them! they made my hair light and fluffy! i had a lot of volume using those products too!

I co-sign with this. I make sure to keep my scalp clean and free of build up. I do not add any oils to my scalp unless I'm doing a pre-poo. For the following issues...
Dry hair- Pre-poo, DC, moisturize and seal twice daily really helps.
Breakage-I use a light protein every week such as aphogee 2 min and once every 8 weeks or so I use the 2 step.
Dull hair- clarify every 8-10 weeks.

Also I have been using shea moisture thickening shampoo and this in conjunction with stretching my relaxers, and not allowing my hair to get bone straight as well as drastically limiting direct heat has improved my hair's thickness and strength.

(answering the above question) I still DC - they definitely have made my hair stronger without getting overloaded in protein - I would not use these in lieu of deep conditioning and I guess I essentially would use this in place of moisturizing and sealing -

If the Alter Ego is not working for you as a DC - then use it as a pre-poo - from 30 minutes to overnight...

For the ladie that use joico kpak line does the shampoo and con also add moisture! I purchase the line but havent used it yet! I just shampooed last night with roux moisture shampoo ans dc with roux moisture recovery to get my moisture up!

Sorry Cookie1 another poster put something about shampoo thinning hair. It wasn't directed at you. Loreal's Everpure reconstructing shampoo and the DevaCare low poo are nice sulfate free shampoos. However if u like what u use then that's great.

My advice is different from everyone else...LOL

I have fine hair...but for whatever reason my ahir does NOT like protein..so i rarely use it.

What has helped me retain length :

Co-washing....this has taken my hair to another level - moisture wise.
Low manipulation/ protective styles...no breakage.
Ceramides (wheat germ oil)...gives my hair a noticeable sheen.
No cones...my hair hates them...causes my hair to be dry no matter how I moisturize. (I use organic condish and jane carter nourish n shine.)

Steaming....dc'ing with heat has nothing on steamer - BELIEVE ME!

Do you DC w/ the PC Conditioner? If not, do you do a DC after using it?

Frequent cowashers. Hi, I was just wondering how you dry/style your hair after your cowashes to prevent breakage. My hair is very fine, and proably wants to be left alone, but I love cowashing too much.:ohwell: But I think the way I let my hair dry afterwards is my culprit. I have decided to do the scarf method and dry on cool and put it in a bun. Once I get the leave ins down, hopefully I will be ok.
