Fake hair - the question

Why do people feel so free to ask, "Is that your real hair?" I buy/wear hair all the time. It's an excellent protective tool, and helps me to look fabulous all the time.

But I've noticed that people feel they have a right to know if it's my "real" hair or not. This is not something I discuss, some people do, I just don't. People I'm not even tight with want to ask me about it. Is it a lack of respect? A disregarding of boundaries? Do they think they can just ask anything they want?

What do ya'll think? How do you respond? /images/graemlins/angry2.gif

<font color="blue"> I have no idea /images/graemlins/whyme.gif My problem is that I really hate when people ask me if my REAL hair is real /images/graemlins/look.gif If I'm wearing a weave and someone inquires about it's authenticity then I tell them it's fake. I have no idea why people feel it's OKAY to ask- I don't even see why they care. Maybe they have presumed either the hair you're rocking is real or not, and they want to see if you would lieor if they were right /images/graemlins/look.gif Also, some people are just flat out nosey... How I deal with it? Well, if I'm wearing a weave or hair piece, I answer truthfully - yeah, it's FAKE. If it's my own hair... well, let's just say I'm still struggling to take that as a compliment

Yeah, I kind of think that is a forward question for someone to ask if they don't know you. But at the same time, I think the taboo of fake hair is almost non-existent these days, so it may just be a sign of the times... /images/graemlins/think.gif

I think that it's mostly because there are a lot of African American men and women out there that don't think that it's possible for AA women to achieve long hair. When I was weaving it...if someone asked me if it was real...I would usually tell them no...unless they were just trying to be rude. The only time that it would really bother me is when someone would ask in front of a crowd of people. I think that's just plain ignorant. When they do that...I think they are mostly trying to embarass you. Then you have the kind of people that feel if they can't achieve it...you can't either. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

...and I also noticed that it's usually the people of color who get questioned about the 'authenticity' of their hair. I remember when I got my first weave, no one could tell if it was my hair or not. Some even asked, "Can I see your scalp?" I mean how ignorant is that? Do you wanna frisk me for drugs too? These stereotypes are getting crazy. /images/graemlins/nono.gif

White people wear weaves and pieces and clip-ons all of the time, but how often do they get questioned...

"Can I see your scalp?" /images/graemlins/huh.gif...now that is taking it to the extreme. /images/graemlins/rofl.gif My Stylist did excellent sew-ins. I remember once I had someone come up to me trying to feel for tracks. /images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I don't know....someone walking up to me and putting their hands in my head...that's something I just won't tolerate....weave or not...definitely a no no...
