Well, my hair is quite a handful to deal with when it's down, esp. in its curly state. It gets all tangled and won't fit under a satin sleep bonnet... so not only does PSing keep my growth on track, but it cuts down on the frustration of dealing with my hair on a day to day basis. If I couldn't keep it up and out of the way 95% of the time, I'd end up relaxing (which for ME equals my hair breaking off).

I HATE wearing this bun. ESP today...I have so many oils in it that it's sticky. My bun looks terrible today but its Friday so who cares. I have been waiting all week to wash it. I feel ugly! And I know DH is tired of it. I refuse to wear it down b/c I already know it's gonna lead to breakage. I am almost afraid of wearing it down for fear of a setback once again. SL has been my "terminal" length for over 5 years. Now I see why; I get to vain and always start flat ironing trying to achieve a look in order to impress. I am taking extra good care of my hair these days. I hope by June when the summer hits I will see a significant change in the volume and length. Until then I will be going through an ugly duckling stage. My ponytail only reaches my kitchen and it is very thin. I want something that swings.I want to wear I high ponytail that reaches my shoulders or beyond. I miss my HS hair. I won't dwell on the past... I am just going to focus on my HHJ and by the time DH and I begin our summer trips I should see some improvement!! Positive thinking!!! Thanks for this thread OP :-)

Um yeah!!!!! I have never felt this way before even when I was transitioning for so long. Now, I feel like ripping out this weave! lol I still have 2 months to go.

I have been wearing protective styles using back to back weaves since last march or april, since then I've only flat ironed my own hair once. I have gained tons of length and I want to enjoy my hair now, but im afraid of having a set back or getting breakage by not weaving it up. So thats why I haven't enjoyed my hair... Im scared to lose it! Plus, im not at my goal (MBL) yet, so thats another reason im not enjoying my hair yet. My gift to myself when I reach my goal is to start wearing it out more often.

Yes I am sick of this bun!!! But Lord knows a sista's got goals!!!!

Sooo I have been bunning since last july and I will keep bunning until I reach my goal of APL curly.

Shrinkage is somethin' else, though. Right now, I'm BSB straight and shoulder curly. Maybe when I get to WL I will achieve my APL curly goal. At that time I will wear more varied styles and let my hair down on the weekends.

One Sweet Day!!!!!

It's harder to do the bunning with my hair because it's in between NL and CBL and it just sucks :nono:

But it seems like the bunning is the best protective style for maintaining length. I'm tired of the twists :nono:

Any other good styles would be appreciated from the fam.

YES!!!!....the only reason I bun is because I'm in the military...when I get out, I HIGHLY doubt I will ever were a bun again :nono:

Not as much anymore. I'm so focused on my goals, wearing a bun has just become what I do. I had to experiment with different types of buns and at different places on my head before feeling truly comfortable (and not waiting longer than 12 weeks to relax). I'm in love with my high bun and feel pretty everyday. Can't wait until my next relaxer though so I can see my progress, then back to bunning until I reach my goals.

Yes I am sick of PSing, I long for the days when I wore my hair out, carefree and blowing in the wind...now when I wear it out, I'm paranoid, and worried that I'm stalling my progress to APL, so back in the bun it goes! Once the weather warms up a bit, I'll start wearing more braid and twist outs, and flexirods to shrink my hair up off my shoulders, so I can enjoy it!

I prefer protective styles because I can be lazy with my hair and don't have to do anything to it daily. Also it keeps all of my hair from being out at once and getting badly tangled. 12+ inches of tangled natural hair isn't anything to play with.

I wear braid outs and bantu knots all of the time..I'm bunning now b/c I'm almost 5 months post and I don't feel like styling it right now

:lachen:

Yeah, I thought about Sylver, and I forgot about Tracee. And they are both relaxed ladies, too. Does Tracee wear braidouts mostly? I think Sylver does.

i used too but the reward of retaining length and health is more important.plus my ps styles are cute and change up(wigs, weaves, braids) i also like giving my hair a break

i learned that when i start to get bored/tired of a PS then its time for me to switch it up or buy another hair accesory...my hair thanks me for learning about PS

Yea I am tired of bunning, but I have made a 5 year commitment to growing my hair to its longest length. I have 3 3/4 years to go. I have decided to wear my hair out all the time from May 1 to October 31st of each year and then bun for the winter months November 1 to April 30th.

I wish I could've chosen 2 options:
-Naw, i'm used to it
-Yes, but a sistah's got goals.

Sometimes I get tired of the PS, but I've been doing it for so many years, that the only time I really become tired is when I just wanna have my hair flowing, blowing in the wind, lol. I can do that via braidouts (still counts as a PS), but it isn't the same as just having it all free, no style to restrict it. I would still PS if I was already at my goal, but particularly in the summer I can't stand my hair on my neck and back...it's way too hot for that! Those are the times I am thankful that I'm a Vet in the PS dept.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry! What kind of stick was it?

I did it and got it right on the first try. And it felt like it was holding very well. I thought I'd try it again a couple of times. When I went to push the stick up towards my head, it felt like I had too much hair to push with it. A few seconds later, it broke. It was wooden. Part of me wants to super glue it or might putty it back together. It was only the tip that broke.

@ Ms Twana, YOUR HAIR HAS GROWN BEAUTIFULLY! I remember when you first went natural and then texturized your hair and now the length has taken off like weeds! Keep taking good care of your hair!

Awww....thanks Pooh!!! :bighug:

When I'm protective styling like I'm doin now...It never really gets boring because I wear my hair out on the weekends and enjoy my hair...This keeps me from getting bored

Tracee, how often do you straighten your hair?

You are SUCH an inspiration, girl. I'm subscribed to your videos. :yep:

And see, I'm kinda torn just like that. When I WAS doing the HYH challenge, I was fine and wasn't bored with my buns. I think I'm just going through that "flowing hair envy" stage where I'm seeing ladies with their hair down and I want that too. Like I said before, when I DO wear it down, I quickly put it back up because it snags on everything.

I get bored period--it's normal. If I've had my hair "out" for a while, I get bored eventually and want to put it away. If I've worn it straight for a while, eventually I start craving braidouts, etc. Variety is good. Protective styling is great, but give it a break on occasion. It's okay.

I agree I get bored alot, but I have so many options that I am cool.

I love my buns, all sorts of wigs, phony ponys, my natural hair wrapped and flowing, I enjoy wearing them all. I just find that most of the time I don't like my hair down. 2 months not straight but totalling out of the year is enough for me!

If I could master that braid out I'd be on it!

I am FED UP with doing protective styling but then I look at pics of my ends and overall hair when I SL, when I had no hope of passing it, and I get over it. It wasn't cute so PS and move on. But I AM NOT a fan of buns, and pin my hair up 99% of the time instead... My boyfriend on the other hand complains he doesn't get to see my hair in a bun more often hahah.

He likes buns? LOL

No, not at all. But I get the best of both worlds with my crochet twists. My hair is cornrowed underneath but it gives the illusion of my hair being "out".

Yes. I am sick of it. but my PS is out of pure lazyness not hair health lol.

I did my hair this morning and let it out

Thanks...I only flat iron maybe 4-5 times a year...I try to stay away from heat

I love protective styles. My ultimate goal is WL so I can wear MORE protective styles lol. I think i'm used to it because as a kid I never wore my hair out unless it was straightened for Easter Sunday and even when I began taking care of it myself I never wore it down. There was a point where I was blowdrying and flat ironing weekly and wearing it down but it didn't last long cuz I got lazy and fed up with it lol.

I went from daily wet bunning to box braids to twist outs....I hope I don't regret it. :nono: I am trying to switch up on PS styles and still retain length. :look:
