Okay ladies. I did a 6 month Hide Your Hair challenge last year and I did great at retaining length. Even though I'm not on the challenge anymore, I still find myself bunning or protective styling most of the time now still. I know that it helps me achieve my hair goals, but it's getting a little old. Don't get me wrong, my hair has NEVER been this length. But I mean, when will I be able to ENJOY my length???

Most of the ladies who have long hair that make me drool say they wear protective styles most of the time. So is that what I have to look forward to for forever??? UGH!!!

I look at my siggy picture and I want to see and feel my hair like that more often. I'm tired of this tired bun that I don't know how to dress up real well. But then I remember in the past chemicals + regular heat use = SL broken hair. :nono: So I'm torn. :perplexed

*raises hand* Meeeee!!!!

I did a 3month hide your hair challenge at the end of 2009 and I am in a 6month one now and I must admit I am tired of PSn.....sigh.....but I want to bypass the SL to APL mark so im going to continue but im tired tho. and PSn has been good to my hair but I want to enjoy my hair more!

I swear im going on a PS break once I pass APL!..... I miss my hair but I know this is the best thing for my hair.

I feel the same way. I am so TIRED of the bun. I have been bunning non stop since September. So I know how you feel. Maybe some of the ladies that have already met their goals will chime in and tell us how they keep their hair healthy, retain and enjoy their length.

I don't enjoy it but I am not tired of it either. I just don't like dealing with hair thats not where I want it to be so it makes it much easier to put it away and not worry about it. The only challenge I have is DH not liking my buns but he understands the bigger picture so I don't hear much about it lol.

I was just about to make a similar thread.
I am about fed up of this damn bun...but the only way I think I look decent is if I straighten..and that is a no-no, since I am trying to get to APL.
I hate it, I have been bunning more or less for 2 years and it is getting really old.
My SO asked me the other day "When are you going to wear your hair out?" Poor thing, I know he is tired of me looking like an old school teacher.

I am going to do my best to stay on track so I can enjoy my hair when it's longer..I refuse to have bunned for 2 years in vain, just to jack it up again.

Hang in there OP..

LOL at "Yes, but a sista's got goals"...so true, but once I reach my goal (maybe even before that) I'll be wearing my hair out and enjoying my length...Traycee and Sylver2 have gorgeous hair and they don't protective style 24/7 and I'm sure there are many other gorgeous heads out there that also don't bun all the time.

The funny thing is that I've started using PS as a way to be hair lazy. It's so much easier to just wash and bun. Or then when I DO wear my hair down, I put it back up in a bun when it starts to snag on my clothes. So I just wanna enjoy my length by wearing it down; without the working of straightening it and without it snagging and becoming damaged.

:lachen:

Yeah, I thought about Sylver, and I forgot about Tracee. And they are both relaxed ladies, too. Does Tracee wear braidouts mostly? I think Sylver does.

Nope. Being able to do a new bun that I couldn't do before is how I enjoy my hair. Buying new sticks and forks for me is how buying new shoes or a new purse is for other women.

Oh oh oh. I got hair candy from my LHCF secret santa, and I don't have a clue how to use them. So how do you wear the sticks without your hair coming down?

I didn't think I would enjoy PSing, but now I am really enjoying the idea of having a big reveal. I also realize I don't care how long or short, people know my hair maybe.
I only care wether I know it's long or short. So I don't miss wearing out. I like the secret
my little secret!

I don't like my hair down so I love hiding my hair with short wigs or putting my hair up in a clip. But there are sometimes rare but some that I like to blow dry and flat iron. ;)

Insert fork or stick at one end, pointing away from the bun, then shift it in the right direction, grab some scalp hair and poke it through the other end.

I don't think that makes any sense. I'll look for a tutorial video :)

In this video, at 1:09 she does roughly what I'm describing. I only use one stick. If you put in right, it's sturdy.

Ooooohhhh. Thanks. The one that you were talking about, I usually wear my hair like that everyday, minus the sticks. When I did try the stick, it was sooooo cute. But my hair kept coming down. Okay, I'll be trying it this way from now on.

You might want to practice at home for a little while until you get the hang of it, ok? But once you do, I holds really well.

My fave thing about PS is that it takes 3 seconds to do my hair every morning. I just wish my hair was longer so I could do other types of buns.

One gift that I got was two pieces. It was a hair stick with another piece that kind of looks like a V. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Okay, I just broke my stick trying it that way. :ohwell:

Sometimes...

In the spring & summer I love wearing my hair down.. Fall & winter I enjoy wearing my hair in a bun.. For me, bunning all the time has given me the most retention I ever had but I still get tired of protective styling though..

I've actually started bunning more. And I am loving it now. I have started stocking up on big dangly earrings. I can't wait to bun just so I can wear my earrings. I went to forever 21 and went crazy. Also having cute hair clips and etc that match work but ain't nothing like some fabulous earrings. I also bought some from my local BX (aafes).

Forever21 earrings

ETA: How bout trying a curly pony tail. Like pin curling, or sating rollers over night, and then put in a pony tail, with some FAB earrings. It won't be touching your body.

I voted yes. But I am better with PS than I used to be.

Before LHCF, I didn't even know about PS. :spinning: But I did do roller sets and sew-ins as preferred styles w/o knowing that it was helping my hair grow. And back then I never did anything else right for my hair (DC, satin cap, etc.) and my hair still grew.

Now, I bun in wet weather, bad hair days, when feeling ill, etc. Other times I wear it out. I'm hoping my new knowledge in healthy hair practices (e.g., no or only low heat, satin cap, moisture+seal, DC) will help me retain growth and enjoy my hair at the same time!:yep:

I didn't know I was protective styling until I got here. I am just plain old "hair lazy" Honestly, I love my Signature Bun, nothing pretty about it, but it is my trademark, I am known for it.:yep:

I voted "Yes. I wanna enjoy my hair."

I was planning on doing the bun challenge for the whole year of 2010... It only lasted a month. Wearing my hair in a bun made me feel "blah".

Last night, I blowdried and flatironed my hair. I noticed more thickness than before.

I think there's ways to retain hair growth without protective styling though... you just have to be very gentle with your hair.

@ Ms Twana, YOUR HAIR HAS GROWN BEAUTIFULLY! I remember when you first went natural and then texturized your hair and now the length has taken off like weeds! Keep taking good care of your hair!

That is why I prefer weaves and tree braids as a protective style instead of buns. I do wear them but after a few days, I get so tired of them. And I don't like having access to my hair that often either. It is a recipe for disaster with me.

With my weaves, I can flat iron until my hand cramps up.

I'm currently in my longest stretch ever which is 14 weeks. For the last two weeks my hair has been looking HAM because I'm trying to be all about protective styling and low manipulation. I almost cried the other day getting ready for work cause I looked so awful in the mirror. Anyway I have a hair appointment for my relaxer touch up on Feb 12 :). This time around I'm only stretching 8 or 9 weeks with the plan of making at least one salon visit in between to get a wash&set. I need to feel cute again but hopefully still retain length. *fingers crossed*

I'm tired of PS as well, but the midwest winters are brutal so I don't have a choice.

I have discovered some beautiful hair accessories to dress up my updo's. My favorites are my giant clips (it's like the ficcare clip only much cheaper).

When I'm protective styling like I'm doin now...It never really gets boring because I wear my hair out on the weekends and enjoy my hair...This keeps me from getting bored

It gets tiresome and boring sometimes, but I am trying to reach my goals as fast as I can. I will enjoy my hair once I get to MBL.

I recently started half-wigging it. My hair is braided underneath. My plan is to do this for all of 2010. But yeah, I already get the urge to let my own hair loose. And I think I will every now and then, in order to stay on my personal challenge and not lose focus.
