Engagement Party-Did You Have One?

How soon after you became engaged did you have one? Did you have a traditional dance party or more of a dinner? TIA!

I will be going to engagement party #3 on July 30th. The theme will be Christmas in July They will be bbq'ing and having a live band. The couple will be getting married in Dec 2012 so that's the reasoning behind the theme. They got engaged at the beginning of April 2011. All of the engagement parties I went to thus far were informal and outside with buffet food, friends and family, good music.

I had had to decline about 2 invites because I cant take off of work and quite simply I cant afford it (actually I can but I prefer to spend money on myself ). Only one invite so far said gifts denied...so that means all the other parties people are expecting something I dont have a prob but If Im going to the bridal shower and wedding, I think the proper thing to do is let people come to celebrate the enagagement and not have to worry about buying gifts.

Ok...so...do you want to know if people had one, or do you want us to know that you don't want to give people gifts for engagement parties? Either way, I say don't buy a gift if you don't want to. I don't think they're really expected. Plus, one less thank you note to write!

Not engaged but the engagement parties I've gone to were thrown for the couple by others 2-3months after their engagement. One was just a dinner, the other was like a drop-in type gathering with music.

Last engagement party was a surprise (to the bride to be) as the proposal was done and then the party directly after.

I'm engaged. We had our engagement party mid-Jan of this year. We got engaged Nov 17, 2010. The party was pretty informal, at a local pub. We had a full open bar from 7p-11p and offered hot and cold h'orderves. It was a lot of fun and our guests said they enjoyed themselves too.

We had ours a year before the wedding. It was summer and a tropical, tented event. We did our own food and decor, had a bar and music. It was very nice and memorable.

My engagement dinner was immediately after the proposal. It was a very small gathering.
