Ends in water?

Does anyone trim there ends by sticking them in water and trimming the hairs that stick out? If not, I need a new method because I've kinda never trimmed my ends and they need a trim badly, but it's too short to bring around to the front of my head to see the splits. What to do?

I've never heard of this technique...

Is there anyone that you know of that will trim your hair without cutting off too much? Perhaps a close friend or relative.

I usually do a rollerset and wait until my hair is completely dry (after sitting under a dryer) so that my hair is smooth. Then I comb it down in the style that my hair is cut primarily and have my mother trim it for me section by section. She uses good sharpened scissors.
