"Economically" Disposing of Product "Junk"

In this uncertain economy, I think it prudent to recycle all the stuff that we have but don't use. Instead of making it a part of our burgoning landfills, let's get creative:

• Before you toss out that shampoo that was made to break your hair off: Use it as a tub/shower cleaner. Ladies, it works great and I mean great(SCARY)

• Before you toss out that deep conditioner that ust didn't work you, use it as a cowash.

• Before you toss out your leave-in products that you should have left out of your hair, add them to the deep conditioners that you are tossing and make them part of your cowash.

• Do ya have a bunch of "moisturizers" that just didn't do anything? Add them to your prepoo - they make great fillers and hey, they are going get washed out in a quick minute anyways.

Excellent idea for a thread!

Instead of throwing out my sulfate containing shampoos I add oil to them and make them moisturizing shampoos.

I use shampoos too as a handwash, you can also water it down and/or add oil or lotion so it won't be as drying to your hands.

Get rid of excess conditioner bottles by combining the little left in them adding some drops of essential oils and using them as a prepoo.

Improving leave-ins by using them with oil for styling and moisturizing. You don't necessarily have to mix them together.

Wash out tub with left over neutralizing shampoo.

(I'm doing all this currently to narrow my products down to my staples. I've also learned that you can pretty much improve any hair product to make it work or be less harmful for your hair. You also save a lot of money in the process.)

I have nothing to add except ditto, your list is perfect! I have done this in the past when I accumulate stuff and it works. I am so not a pj these days but will occasionally run across that product that fell over under the sink that needs to be used up.

Great thread. I need to figure out how to use up some of my leave-ins.

I have another that I've posted before - if you have make up brushes wash them with old shampoo you don't like. It's soft of the hairs and cheaper than the cosmetic brush cleaners.

I also use old shampoo and condish that I don't like to shave. Even the ones that don't give slip in my hair give great slip on the legs and underarms.

Head to a Women's shelter with your products..... Maybe you can give to someone else and they won't have to go without!

I can wash my hand knits in natural shampoos or cheap conditioners.

If there is some lonely conditioner at the bottom of the bottle that seems hard to shake out, I mix a little water with it and rub it on my cuticles. They stay oh so soft and makes it easier to push my cuticles back. (I figured you could do this- Rachel Ray has her bottom of the jar recipes, so do I.)

If there is something I am no longer interested in, I hand it over to my mother or sister. They don't mind getting hand me downs if it saves them money.

Use it to wash socks, panty hose or other delicates.

Let my nieces have it to wash their dolls' hair.

Cheap a$$ bubble bath (or give it to my nieces to wash their dolls with ) or during a foot soak where I pretty much mix in whatever I want.

Use shampoo, but dilute it with a little water and use as an emergency handwash if there is none at home. Mix it in an empty soap dispenser bottle.

I used some shampoo a few weeks ago to clean my mom's hairbrush 'cause she won't do it!

I am a product junkie, so sometimes I'll get in one of my moods and allow family members to come over and grab some paper bags so that they can shop til they drop

ETA: My brother-in-law and I sold some items at his and my sister's annual apartment complex yard sale last year. I sold so many hair and body products. Some were used, but people were buying them! I wouldn't, but everything was .25, so I don't think they cared...

Good idea. To add, put a note in the delivery basket to use these products on anything but their hair. Tee hee hee.

I think I read somewhere too that you can use Conditioner as a "in shower lotion". Olay sells this for about $8.00 (us slather it on after you showere, leave it on a couple mins and then you rinse it off).

I use cheap body wash (think Wal-mart christmans specials) as hand soap. I also added glycerin to cheap lotions.

If you have any full bottles or almost full bottles of different productes please please contact your local homeless shelters or transition shelters for women and children.

They will gladly take all of this off your hands and it is a tax write off to boot.

If we are having trouble or feeling the pinch financially, just imagine how many more families will be out on the streets that are less fortunate that we are.

You could even start a drive at your church or when you get together with other LHCF members for a meet and greet tell them to bring what they no longer want or use and have someone designated to take the items to a place where folks could use your products.

I add a teaspoon of the following items I'm trying to get rid of:

Lotion
Body cream
Carrot, cocoa or shea butters
Leave ins
Glycerin
Aloe vera
Detanglers
One or two good quality, inexpensive conditioners
An oil blend which consists of 5 to 14 oils

Set aside an 8 ounce tub of mediocre conditioner that doesn’t work well. Mix the above items. Add three or four drops of your favorite perfume for a nice scent. Add a teaspoon or tablespoon of the following to your conditioner to give it a little color: eye shadow dust, or blush, or foundation or translucent face powder.

I was really impressed with the results. My hair looked fabulous. This works just as well as my expensive Verifen Complex conditioner. I didn’t even want to go to the salon for my next appointment.

Also, I use shampoo to hand wash my silk scarves, combs and brushes. It washes away any oils that may be built up and keeps them fresh!
