Dry and Broken Hair...(PICS)

Hey yall...

Last time I flat ironed my nape, in February 2007, it looked like this

http://public.fotki.com/smitge/hair-pictures/2007/p2191258.html

I am trying to prevent this from happening again when I go back to flat iron again. I used CHI silk infusion and my (hot) CHI irons. I am sure that I need a trim, being that I havent trimmed my hair in about 6 or 7 mos, but I am just trying to avoid having my ends look like this again next time I go to flat iron.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)

BTW I am 100% natural and 4B

Good thread. I think keeping the ends oiled would help, but I'm not sure. It seems like many naturals have that problem (i.e., when we straighten our hair we can see split ends).

Hopefully, someone will give a good response to this question cause I need help in this area also.

i flat ironed my daughters hair for Easter and it was uneven too. i just figured it was because all of her hair wasn't completely straight. some parts were still a little curly curly. i wonder if she needs a trim ??? it's been two years.

oh yes, get a trim asap to straighten out the ends. then when you flat iron again it will be even and take the heat better. in between my relaxers (im a 4b and sometimes you cant even tell my hair is relaxed lol) when I used to do them myself, my hair would coil up if I stretched the relaxer, and that is EXACTLY what it would look like. get a good trim , keep it moisturized and another suggestion is to keep heat off the ends as much as you can before you trim it. and when you are flat ironing, i was told by someone else on here to use heat protectant. i never used to and now my hair is paying for it. but i think you should be ok after you get a trim though

So a trim is what I needed... Hmm that makes sense, being the fact that I hadnt had a "real" one

What kind of heat protectant do you use? Should I concentrate the protectant primarily on the ends?

Any naturals out there with similar problem who solved it?

I'ma natural but i havnt flat ironed my hair yet..(ive been natural sicne augest) maybe ask bmoregirl because i know she just got her hair flat ironed not to long ago..

Hmmmm... I would get your hair straightened by someone else before you jump to conclusions. When I blow dry my hair myself it looks pretty similar to how your hair looks in that picture, but when I had my hair straightened professionally a few weeks later the ends were actually quite even and full (you can see in my fotki feb/march) I also notice that your part is uneven that might make certain parts look thinner than others.

If after that they still look like that afterwards then get the trim. HTH :)

WOW YOUR NAPE LOOKS LIKE MINE A LITTLE THIN IN THE CENTER I WONDER WHAT THAT IS FROM

Yeah...me too...

Some of the things that I had problems with when I had a relaxer are the same now that I am natural, My right side of my head has always been thinner than my left, and my nape thins out in the middle:hammer:

Thanks! I am scheduled to have a professional press (well actually flat iron) for Memorial Day. I am just trying to get my hair in shape for the professional. I will be too  if I go get it done professionally and it turns out like that on the ends...

havent found one yet :ohwell: i been just using the hood dryer. when i used to go to the salon and get it flat ironed, ny stylist used that chi infusion stuff, but he used the oven curlers, so im not sure if it makes a difference (probably doesnt) .

I usually air dry my hair...

I just really want to avoid trimming once I get to the salon, after hearing all these horror stories, its something I'd like to tackle before I even get there...

Yeah looks like a simple trim would do the trick.

HI guys....I just luv this forum....Another questions to go w/this one...I color my hair, is naturally wavy, fine texture>>>for treating and deep conditioning regimen, do you guys recommending hot oil treatment first and then conditioner....And seal ends w/oil when styling.......or the other way around, as in conditioner first and then hot oil???.....Am really trying to get it to BSL....Right now is about 1" below shoulder length?....Tahnks in advance....

Right now it doesn't look as bad as you led us to believe in your OP. I agree with ohsosuzy that your nape will probably look better when professionally flat ironed and with a straight part! :)

I couldn't see your pic, but I would say based on the info you posted that you need to deep condtion and spray a leave-in (w/protein) in it before you style. Also a good heat protectant to have on hand is Nexxus Heat Protexx. Also, is your flat iron temp. adjustable? Any temp over 300 IMO is too high, and is doing more harm than good. When I was natural, it didn't matter how high the heat was, the ends would be frizzy, but looking back on it, it was b/c my hair wasn't in the right condition prior to styling. CHI Silk Infusion is an awesome product, but it can only do so much...

HTH
