Does your natural hair look "fake"? WTH???

Little bit of both. It annoys me people assume my hair is so healthy looking it CAN'T be mine. Then again, it's so healthy looking it's clearly above average. Whether or not I'm offended depends on how it is asked/stated.

I thought I would never have that problem, and I dont.. when my hair is dry...:look: .. when my hair is in a fresh wash n go... man o man that's when I get the "is that real" or the "does it just curl like that on it's own".."i know that's a fake"...I dont even get annoyed by it.. I just nod my head and say yes it's all mine.. and wait for the questions of "how i got it like that" and "what do you do to it" to come..

I straighten my hair for the first time in six months this week and I got that ALOT. And then people did believe me! I was kinda offended when I was asked if it was a wig. I think that was a little much.

When I was relaxed, and when I straighten my hair nowadays, I occasionally have people think it's not my hair. My hair wasn't that long when I was relaxed so I think it was the sleekness and shine that made then wonder. Now I think it's the length that makes them second guess if it's real.

No one has ever wondered, to my knowledge, if my natural hair (non-straightened) is mine.

SEMO I need to steal your flat ironing secret. I don't know if it's my texture or what but the front of my hair never looks as straight as the rest of my hair.

It happened to me when i was relaxed, because i have TOO MUCH hair, and even with a relaxer the hair looks excesive, like a wig, same thing happend to my sister. Las year i was visiting the states for the first time, and several black women asked if i was relaxed or if i wear wigs ... it was funny because in my country (Dominican RepubliC) people asked me that because it was a LOT of hair, not because it couldn't be mine, but in Usa was totally different, even when i said is my hair, they didn't seem like they believe me. One even touch my hair.

Now i can't wait to see how my long natural hair is going to look like.

people ask me if my hair is real, when it is unpressed and thick. they are like "you have two heads of hair on that head...is it yours?" i dont get offended..they are just wondering..

I looked at your fotki and you have some gorgeous hair..I think people ask you because it has a glossy/fiberous look that I have seen on hair that is sold at the bss.

Right when I BC'd the little lady at walgreens asked me if my hair was real, meanwhile with her hands all up in my head, and mind you my hair was and is not long it was just a mass of coils that shes probably never seen!!! I was more flattered that day I guess because I just bc'd and someone was complimenting my hair after stating that...lol!!! I dont mind get offended if people do...I just take it as a compliment and keep on stepping.

OP: Gorgeous hair I can see why

Semo: AHHHHHH...Im at a lost of words...ur thickness

I straightened my hair once after BCing for my guy friend's birthday party.

His mom said to me "WOW! Your hair is so thick and shiny! Is this yours? Can I touch it?!" and then proceeded to weave check me.

I don't take it as an insult per se, but I just kind of go "No... its mine.."

when my hair is straight (and when it was relaxed) i get weave-checked all the time and i'm barely SL. and when i have a really exceptional wash-n-go day, folks think i put some sort of curly texturizer. mind u i am a 4bzc. i think people are just not used to seeing healthy black hair, whether it's natural or relaxed.

it's a little annoying, but i take it as a compliment and if time allows i give them hair care tips.

Oh for sure, I had a friend of mine who was like oh that was all you in those pics? "All these years I just assumed those were tracks" I was like:blush:oh no:nono: but I can't say I get that reaction all the time:scratchch yea when your hair has a super high gloss it can start to look fake...

I want a lot of hair!!! :( I always admired women with thick excessive hair. It seemed so full and has personality! My hair is boring and too thin. Any tips for making it appear thick and fuller at least?? Anyone...?

...your hair is NOT boring.
If that's boring hair, then please Jesus, let me grow some boring hair. :look:

Nobody ever asks if my hair is fake, I think because it's not long.
But I would understand why you would feel offended, at least on a subconcious level, because someone asks you that. It's like the same reason why it's annoying when people see a black woman with long healthy hair, and start asking "What are you mixed with?" or "Is that all yours?". But if they saw a white woman, or asian woman, or middle eastern woman, or hispanic woman with the same kind of hair, they wouldn't ask her if it was fake.

I wouldn't call it racism exactly. I don't know what to call it, but I wouldn't say it's racism, even though the question definitely has something to do with the fact that you are black. I think it's just because in western society, people are used to seeing black women with short and unhealthy hair, because many of us have relaxers, but don't practice proper haircare. And then, even women who are natural don't know how to really take care of their natural hair. But instead of trying to change the way that they care for their hair, many black women just assume that black hair can't grow, and then they tell that to everyone else who isn't black, and next thing you know, everyone is thinking that black people's hair doesn't grow unless the person is of mixed ethnicity. :nono:

The majority of black women who have hair like yours (:lick:, sorry if that's creepy) buy it from the store. So when they see your hair, that's the first thing that they assume. Honestly, I don't think you should be offended...it's definitely a compliment, even if it's not very...well-delivered. (Am I the only one who thinks it's rude to tell someone that their hair looks like a wig?) But I can understand why the question would bother you.

Sorry for the long-winded response.

My flat ironing secret? You know you just puffed my head up right? :lachen: Girl there are plenty of people that have better technique than I. But your comment made my day. :hug3: If you want to get a really good flat ironing technique then watch this video a stylist put up on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G0xJo1hv1c

Now she does a great job. :yep:

I have been asked before was my blown out fro was my real hair, but I think it is because, at the time, I usually wore my hair in the wash and go with full shrinkage.

But i have had someone do the weave check on my hair when I was relaxed because they thought my hair grew too fast ( funny thing I dont think it grows that fast at 1/2" per month)

Well, your hair is pretty. When I used to wear my hair straight people would ask me if my hair was real and told me that my hair looked like a wig quite often. Now that I'm natural I do not hear these comments as much.

When I wear my hair in a puff I get weave checked all the time lol

Yup, this is me too.
I get lots of questions and commets about my puff.

I try to deliberately make ita litte messy so it will look real but I'm frequently getting comments or questionsabout it.

Sometimes people will just ask me where I got it. LOL!

that's funny....
Just a week or so after my BC, this Asian lady who was doing my eyebrows was asking me if this was my real hair.

I was like yes...:look: she was like "it's curly like that? ooh it's pretty" so i just smiled and thanked her.

It was just very weird to me to have this 1a person asking me if my hair is real, my 3c/mostly 4a afro! lol

I have gotten some other comments by girls whom I think haven't seen a lot of coily/curly hair... questions about whether I put anything in it to make it like that. Well, I try to moisturize it, if that's what you mean. They are referring more to the curl pattern and i'm like... huh? :ohwell:

People have been telling me that nearly every time they see me, my hair looks like a different texture. I don't know if that's good or bad! I'm trying to figure out my hair myself!

What are you saying? !! your hair is gorgeous!!!!!
I wish mine looks like that in it's natural state.

:lachen: that comment made me laugh for some reason. i don't understand why it looks that way. but from what i've read in someone's post it's because of "cones" in certain products. there are two products that i use that has some, maybe i should try to cut them out and see what happens? i also use olive/carrot/tea tree oils in my hair? i dunno...:perplexed

yep, its the cones. try using jamaican castor oil for a change. it has really made my hair supple and moisturizes.

I haven't got long hair yet but I think it would bother me.

Honestly, if you have oily skin it definately can mean in some cases you have more scalp oil as well. If you were wearing hair straight I wouldn't put anything oil based on in that case in the styling process or after maintenence because you already have enough. Which is a GOOD thing for black hair!

Maybe try without the coconut oil/or less and see what it looks like. Your hair looks very healthy BTW

Ivey, your hair is S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G! :yep: I too have oily/shiny face (and it's also acne prone with very large pores). My hair tends to be oily/shiny around the front edges.

Part of it is the combination of thickness, shine, and rich color of healthy hair. My own mother asked me if I was wearing a wig when I straightened (after I started henna and other healthy practices and my hair was short at the time(neck length). It did sort of look wiggish. But I wouldn't get too annoyed just say nope it's mine and (It's cliché but KIM).
