I am at a cross road I love straight hair, my ultimate hairstyle would be a thick fringe with bsl at least. My hair is relaxed and does not straighten easily at all, it takes super relaxer to get it straight, not bone straight but straight.

I now use chi silk infusion and chi iron guard with little product and I get great results but I also get split ends, my hair feels really silky but a little dry by day four after wash day. I moisturise with rusk sensories smoother and coconut oil. i dc with dry damaged conditioners.

Even when I use protective styles my very thick hair prefers to be straightened before hand.

How often can I flat iron bone straight?

Can I get to bsl or wsl if flat ironing weekly is in my regimen?

...Everyones hair is different.
What works for one person may not work for the next. ...It depends on the person...So if flat ironing once a week is working for you...then go for it...If you notice you are not retaining length you may need to decrease the number of times you use your flat iron.

But I think abusing the flat iron can and will cause breakage over time therefore causing you not to retain length.

Cathy Howse flat irons her hair weekly and has bsl hair

Yah, but she is natural, which, I think is a little different than straightening relaxed hair. In my experience, natural hair can handle heat slightly better than relaxed hair. Either way, this is a totally subjective question because it depends on your hair. For my hair, the answer would be more heat causes breakage. However, there are some ladies who flatiron relaxed hair weekly and their hair flourishes. If you notice your hair is drier or breaks more easily, I would suggest the heat is the first thing you change

Hmm my hair is very thick and dense, even relaxer looses the battle but my flat iron and chi silk/infra products just make it perfect. I am thinking that maybe its best that I go natural and and use heat for a straight style rather than stay relaxed and frizzy. If I am snipping away slowly then I suppose the damage will not count. I have a 3c 4a texture.

I was just wondering this the other day, with white women. At work, 4-5 of them had the frizzies...that slight halo of broken off hairs on the crown...and ends. They are flat-ironing and it's wreaking havoc on their hair.:nono:

But I thought silkening referred to a chemical process to release just a bit of curl as in that famous curly hair salon in NYC.

well I checked out patchouli tutorial on fotki and turns out that chi silk infusion is not a heat protector so if I use the straight guard I should not get breakage.

I know a lot of my white friends like to flat iron their hair whilst damp which fries the cortex of the hair over time, also they do not like to use serum because it makes their hair appear greasy. Also they flat iron their hair as often they wash it which is sometimes daily.

Now, silkening, I don't know, somebody told me that this is what its called and is she is a professional I just took her word for it.

cathy howes says this chemicals do not make a difference as long as your hair is clean.

9. In your book you never talked about flat irons, is it okay to use one of those on permed hair?

When my book was written, most women had curling irons in their bathrooms, not flat irons thus the reason they were not discussed. A flat iron is okay to use also.

I think you meant the marcel stove in terms of permed hair.

11. They use marcels at the hair salon, are those okay for my hair to be flat ironed with?

Under NO Circumstances should you let your chemically processed hair be touched with any appliance heated on the marcel stoves. It will destroy your hair! Watch them. If you see her reaching for the marcel heated appliances, insist they use the curling or flat iron that is plugged in. NEVER use this type of heat with chemically processed hair!!! NEVER!!!

I'm not sure what "silkening" is but it does seem like the flat iron is causing too much damage. I rollerset weekly and wear my hair straight for 3-4 days a week. I don't usually flat iron but if I do I only do the roots when I'm about 9-10 weeks post relaxer.

Have you tried rollersetting and just ironing or blowing out the roots? You wouldn't need to apply heat to the length of your hair.

I have not because my hooded dryer is not ionic and since experiencing this new type of heat I don't want to go back. My hair used to feel very dry straight after using the hooded dryer.

Short answer, yes, but
Are you deep conditioning with heat @ each shampoo? Taking the time to deep condition, roller set, then flat iron makes a world of difference with my hair, that & only using heat once a week. Silk didn't do anything for my hair, I'm a fan of sabino's moisture block.

No I have not unpacked my steamer for a long while but I am going to start DCing with heat again, maybe that's my problem.

Peeps I thought I would feed back on this dead old thread. I silkened or flat ironed for eight months and retained half of what I should have. It did cause breakage! I have course resistant hair, lord knows what would have happened if my hair was fine. Be warned xx

Do you use lye or no-lye relaxers? Everyone's hair is different, but most relaxed hair can't be flat ironed often and not suffer from at least some damage & breakage.

Have you considered wearing weaves and allowing your own hair to thrive? If that's not an option for you, then going natural & becoming heat trained may be your best option. Heat trained natural hair can thrive better than constantly flat ironed relaxed hair.

However, if you are not satisfied after a super perm & flat iron... then heat trained natural hair may not be straight enough for you.

It sounds like you have very thick hair. I'd love to trade LOL!

I Agree with you!!

No I don't think heat training is the answer tbh and I did deep condition weekly with protein and moisture. It just did not work for me, simpliz!
