Does Rollersetting Cause Breakage?

The reason that I ask is because I have been airdrying my hair loose for several months now and my air has grown, but it has been fairly dry and brittle. However, I lost very little hair up until week 10 past a relaxer. I am now at week 7 and decided to try a modified rollerset. I put my hair in 4 ponytails and then rollerset the ponytails. I noticed more hairs, I might have counted between 10-15 hairs, none with bulbs, while I did this modified rollerset and I noticed one broken hair this morning.

Is it because of the rollerset? I had just finished an Emergencee treatment and followed it up with a deep conditioner made of coconut milk, EVOO, and Hollywood beauty cholesterol. I have been conditioning my hair after every wash. This is still less than the literal SHOWER of broken hairs I used to get when I rollerset with heat, but still. I hate to see any broken hairs.

Also, I rollerset and then airdried with magnetic rollers. The ends were smooth, so I now know that I will not need to rollerset with heat ever in the future unless I am in a rush.

when i was first starting out i used to get alot of breakage and ripping but i don't experience that anymore.

I think the breakage came from airdrying your hair loose. Did you moisturize your hair or ever seal your cuticles (with like serum or oil) when airdrying because when you airdry loose, you are leaving the cuticles open. Even though you're not using heat, drying your hair in just plain air can be damaging too. When cuticles are left open, they are prone to break and will lead to dry brittle hair if you continue to do so. Also, particles and bacteria can get into your cuticles when left open. It's good that you are now starting to airdry in rollers. Also, twists and braids are good ways to airdry. (I read this in an article yesterday about heat usage vs. airdrying).
And as long as you are not rough with your hair, you should not get breakage from rollersetting. ;)

Thanks for the tips. I actually put the ponytails in this time and curled those ponytails. I basically used the ponytail method with rollers, so I am wondering why I got breakage this time. I usually do not comb when I airdry my hair loose. I just leave it completely alone until I wet it the next time. So I am surprised that the one time that I airdry my hair with rollers, it begins to break. Please help.

Buy the paper that wraps around the roller and see if the breakage stops. :)
Thanks for the tip, but I have used that paper in the past and it has actually made my hair crispy. My former stylist warned me that those papers could actually do more harm than good if not used properly and I never quite got the hang of them. The thing with those papers is that they also will "set" you hair. So if you wrap your hair around the roller and the paper becomes slightly crumpled, your hair will become slightly crumpled. If nothing else works I will go back to this and see what happens.

Ditto that. Could it have been the elastics or whatever you used to hold the ponytails?
I think that I have finer and more fragile hair than Allandra, I am a type 4, and I might have more fragile hair than you as well, so this might be part of it. My hair is very fragile.

I use elastics that I made out of panythose (I cut the legs of panythose into rings) because it was much healthier for my hair than the Scunci or Goody elastics -- even the ones without metal.

How did you stop the breakage and ripping? Thanks.

using a wide tooth comb to section and detangle first, then a small tooth comb to smooth it on the rollers. and i use leave ins that give nice slip such as rusk smoother, john freida serum, and a spray bottle filled with water. if that still doesnt help i'll pull out the pantene detangling spray. oh yeah, taking the time to work through the tangles.

Roller setting has never caused my hair breakage.
From the descriptions that you have given me of your hair, I think that my hair might be more fragile than yours. My hair is very, fragile, type 4b and I know that you have been on this hair journey for much longer than I have, so I am sure that your hair is in great shape. I have been doing it for a few months, so I still have a lot to learn. Could you let us know the technique that you use for your rollersets? Its great that it does not cause your hair to break.

I'm wondering about this too. I rollerset using the ponytail method, without breakage. I stay away from any of the rubberband type elastics (especially the ones that say "no breakage") and use the Scunci Hair Hosiery bands, soaked in olive oil. Whatever band you use, make sure it isn't too tight and that it's seamless without metal parts.

whats the ponytail method? Is there someone's album that has pics of this? rollersetting breaks my hair too.....

Allandra, I know you have long, thick, wavy hair. I was wondering do you use a fine tooth comb to smooth hair before rolling it around your rollers? If not, what do you use to get a section of hair straight/smooth before you roll it up?

Thanks so much for all of these tips. Your hair is gorgeous.

Thanks for the tip. My band is actually a homemade version of the Scunci Hair hosiery and is actually more gentle than the hair hosiery. I simply cut up pantyhose and made the bands myself. In his book, The Hair Bible, Philip Kingsley suggests soaking bands. I will try this the next time I do this.

It sounds like our hair is equally fragile, Dolapo. I do not have pics, but hopefully someone will have it. Maybe you might want to start a new thread to get more responses about this.

Really? Thanks for the tips. I'll make sure to use a serum now. Or will a leave in be fine?

Honeyhips, I think a leave-in should be fine... especially a creamy one like NTM Silk Touch or Salerm21.

Thanks also for the tips. I use so much stuff when I am airdrying it is not funny:

Here is what I have tried: Salerm 21/Lacio Lacio -- left hair dry and crunchy
Bumble and Bumble Conditioner -- worked well. Lights oils -- left hair oily, I am not sure if the hair was exactly moisturized. S-Curl -- made scalp itch like the dickens and let hair dry and crunchy. I used Kerastase serum and NTM serum and they worked really well but I heard that silicones dry out the hair and my UBH moisturizer that I ALSO use has silicone in it, so I stopped with the Kerastase and NTM. Maybe I will go back to those.

I am wondering if the Pantene Detangle light and Pantene R & N setting lotion might have also caused the dryness, hmm.

Also, NTM leave-in left my hair crunchy. Another Serum that I used was Shea Moisture's serum which was thick oils. It was good but kinda oily.

Well didn't you say you would airdry with your hair out/loose? That's why it would feel crunchy. I've airdried with my hair loose with Salerm21 in it and my hair came out crunchy too. But when I airdried my hair in rollers with Salerm21, my hair was soft and bouncy. Try one of these products with your hair in rollers, twists, or braids! ;)

I airdried with my hair in a ponytail and loose and my hair still came out crunchy.

I will try what you suggested. Maybe I will try 4 braids and see what happens. I dont have time to do rollers all the time. I work out 6 days a week and am trying to rinse more often to get rid of the sweat that can accumulate, so I feel that it would be too much manipulation. I will only do rollers on my big wash day.

Well, a ponytail is still airdrying it loose. I've airdried in a ponytail too and it came out crunchy! I've tried so many things from the board to see what works for my hair, it's crazy! :spinning: Put one roller on the ponytail so it will dry softer. :yep:

That is what I did before I started this thread, and the hair that was on the roller dried softer but the hair that was not on the roller (i.e. the base of the ponytail) came out hard. I liked the feeling of the hair that was on the rollers, they were soft like when I used to use heat and it was nice to know that I did not need heat to get my hair to soft and silky. However, as I mentioned, the rest of my hair was dry. Will doing the braids that you mentioned help? That sounds like a quicker alternative to rollers that requires less manipulation. It also sounds like it is healthier for me to go to sleep in than hard plastic rollers.

You are so helpful, Poohbear! Thank you! You are saving me weeks of painful trial and error.

I can relate to what you said in what I put in bold. This happened with me when I did the baggie method and the ponytail method. So that's why I don't airdry my hair in a ponytail anymore because the hair that's not in a ponytail comes out hard, stiff, and dry. UGH! I don't know why it does that, I guess it's because of our hair texture. Btw, I only like doing braidouts on dry hair with S-Curl. My hair came out crispy for some reason when I did it on wet hair but some ladies on this board has had success with it. Best wishes to you and your hair! :)

This is what I do Princess4real. I usually do my rollerset only when I get a perm and my hair is wet setted. I put some Elasta QP Mango Butter on the ends and D&L Corrective leave-in and I roll it up.
