does my hair hate being washed????

Hi guys,

As a professional lurker Ive decided I need to come out of hiding because Im in desperate need of your help.

My hair sheds like A LOT with every wash, even when I cowash. When I detangle it with its dry its quite easy with little/normal shed I think but when I detange in the shower I shed alot..its strange because when i detangle with just water and i comb I dont shed very much but whenever i us conditioner/ shampoo there like a ton of shed hair on the comb and if I run my hands just through the edge of my hair i get like 5-10 hairs coming out..its depressing! Should i just wash my scalp with water? Does y hair not like manipulation? does detagngling count as manipulation? I dunno what to do..:spinning:

p.s I dont think its breakage because after a thorough examination and investigation I can see the bulb at the end and my hair is quite heathy and I think I have the protein moisture in check. oh and i dont think its a hormonal issue.. my hair is 3c and BSL..I dont think it very thick as it is..so pleeeeaaasse help!

Thanks so much for your speedy reply!

I cowash my hair once/twice a week though im thinking that might be too much for my hair and clarify every 2 weeks..i dont really have a structured regimen basically if i feel my hair needs protein i use aphogee 2 min, that works well for me and i use coconut oil for sealing and sapray water for moisture before sealing and bun my hair all of the time..my main goal is to get thicker hair but I cant if its shedding :perplexed

I tried the garlic thing by making a dc with garlic powder..it STANK and i couldnt get the awful smell out of my hair for ages so i didnt do it gain..is BTR black tea rinses? No i havent tried that but Ive been meaning to.. What exactly do I do? rince my hair with the tea? I am willing to do anything in my quest for thicker hair!

Shedding is normal. Unless you are balding or your hair is very thin. Your hair is bsl so I don't see the problem. The average person may shed between 100-150 hairs a day.
I probably shed around 50 hairs a day.

Are you using regular conditioner to cowash? If so, I'd suggest trying a cleansing conditioner, OR putting a 1/2Tsp of Tea Tree oil per full bottle of conditioner (pour conditioner out into a container, blend well, then put back into bottle). I have to pay close attention to the health of my scalp, because it's sensitive. If its not Clean I'll get breakouts, dandruff, and shedding all over the place. Regular cowashing wasn't working for me, because it wasn't getting my scalp clean enough....then I'd have to shampoo, which would cause further damage.

Other alternatives are:
Apple Cider Vinegar rinses
Black Tea Rinses/herbal tea rinse/coffee rinse - check out the challenge thread...Tons of great info there.
Ayurveda/neem oil in your shampoo
Garlic supplements - pills that you take daily. Over time they will reduce shedding

I sometimes feel that way that my hair hates being washed. My hair strands just want to stick together after water and shampoo hits it.

Maybe clarifying every 2 weeks is a bit to much stripping for your hair I clarify like once every few months

Your hair sounds similar to my mine. I absolutely cannot detangle with conditioner otherwise it seems as though my hair just slides right out of my scalp, so that's a no no. I cannot manipulate my hair too much when it's soaking wet.

Detangling on damp hair (just water) works best for me, I lose less hair. I don't know why my hair is this way, maybe because I have fine hair and it's fragile. I just don't question it anymore, I just know this works for my hair.

I did go through a period of shedding where whenever my hair was wet, it would shed! I never quite figured out why this happened, but using Alter Ego conditioner helped.

Since you know your hair does not like to be manipulated while soaking wet, don't detangle with conditioner & shampoo in your hair and use the method that produces less shedding for you, detangling with just water.

When your hair is wet it seems like you are able to access more of those shed hairs than when your hair is dry. This seems normal to me.

I have the same problem! I sat and counted the shed hairs and mines totaled to 80, and that doesnt include cowashing. Im def going to try the black tea rinses. Idk about the garlic pills yet.

What kind of moisturizers do you use between/after washes?
Do you go for days without combing?
Are you getting rid of all shed-hairs before washing? I do this by using conditioner as a pre-poo and using a Denman brush or comb, then proceed to co-wash.

I think it's trapped hair as well. If you're detangling with a wide tooth comb, you're not getting all of your shed hair out. I use a wide tooth, then a paddle brush until I'm satisfied. I have minimal hair come out during the wash. But, if I skimp this, my hair come out when it's loosened during the wash.

Thanks so much for your help guys! it may well be just normal shed but the strange thing is when i use water alone I dont shed as much its just when I use a shampoo/conditioner??:ohwell:

I think we have the same hair!! Yep i will detangle and wash with water, but how do I make sure my scalp is clean with just water...on another forum I lurk on (I told ya im a professional lurker) some people just wash their hair with water alone and I dont understand how they can have a clean scalp/hair..what about build up of oils/ natural oils in your hair?

Mrsjaidiva what does teatree oil do? is it good for cleaning the scalp? I might try that along with black tea rinses..wont do any harm to try it out right?..(famous last word)..

Is it possible that your hair doesn't like the products you use to wash your hair? Have you paid attention to the ingredients? Maybe you should try a different detangling method? Maybe use a different tool than the comb?

Tea Tree Oil is good for:
- Dandruff - Add Tea Tree to your shampoo or conditioner for dandruff, dry or oily scalp, and itchy scalp. Use 10 drops to an 8 ounce bottle.
- Scalp Problems - Itchy, dry, scaly or oily scalps can be helped with Tea Tree Oil. Use as shown above under "Dandruff."

This is a potent essential oil, so never use it straight up. You could use it in your BTR mix as well...I use it in a Lot of my mixes.

If you're just rinsing with just water that isn't loosening anything. Once you start working in product, the manipulation-not the product itself- is loosening the trapped hair.

Aberdonian, Maybe you can dilute your shampoo, using mostly water versus shampoo, in an applicator bottle. Apply this directly to your scalp. Use just enough shampoo to cleanse your scalp and let the run off cleanse your hair. If you have product build up, maybe use a little more shampoo to get a better cleanse.

I saw less shedding when I started using Nexxus ProMend Shampoo & Conditioner. I'm not saying it will work for you but I think it did help to strengthen my hair. I guess it is what my hair needed.
