Does everybody have a "curl pattern"?

Are there people that just have zig zag or very coarse with no type of curl whatsoever? Or does everyone have it? I know this is a dumb question, I'm just curious about it. I know everyone has different hair, but I thought our hair (4s) still had a curl to it while wet naturally. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyone know? What are you thoughts?

I don't believe everyone has a curl pattern either and that's FINE!! :). I sometimes hear people say that everyone does...but I feel like that's said just to...ehhhh...nevermind. I mean, I never once considered the shape of a Z to look like the shape of an S or the shape of a C or the shape of an O, but that's just me.
Dwelling on curl pattern is just another way to sometimes disturb our self esteem when we think that we HAVE to have one, ya know? As long as there's hair on your head that you can wash and style, then Amen! :)

yeah I'm newly transitioning so I'm not even thinking about my own hair per se, I'm just going by what I've seen and wondered if it was true.

I don't know if everyone does. I've seen a lot of hair but can't say I've seen enough of a representation to be that inclusive. I would say that most do. Sometimes it looks like people don't have a curl pattern because the hair is dry or the right techniques haven't been used to bring the curl pattern out.

According to The Curly Girl Handbook (please no one take this seriously), you're either curly or straight. The tiny 4b curls, or the 4c zig zag curls are called "Fractal" Curls. So, every one has a curl "pattern"...but everyone's curl pattern is different.

You don't need to have Botichelli curls to have curly hair, and you don't need to have curls at all to have good hair. Not having curls shouldn't mess with anyone's self esteem.

Well, I had beautiful 3c curl pattern..in the back! The front was just 'cottonball' thanks to genetics on my mom's side, on two thirds of my head I had no 'curl pattern'. Made my 'wash-n-go' look like "wash-n-wth?" :/
So no, not everyone has true curl pattern. BUT that doesn't mean you can't rock certain styles anyway. You just have to work a little harder to find what works for you.

I don't - to the point where I could never have a WNG.

My older sister doesn't either, neither do my parents. Took me 36 years to realise this.

No; I don't. From my nape up about 3" is a clear 4B. The rest of my hair is a cotton ball. And I have no issues with moisture or protein. When my hair is wet, the 4CZ part is cottony and shrunken and the 4B section hangs and has curls. All of my hair is around the same length when stretched; just different textures. The longer my hair gets, the demarcation is very pronounced.

No wash 'n gos for me, no shingling for me. I would pull out all of the 4CZ section trying to get it to do something it's not meant to do -- curl up like the 4B section. So I only do twist-outs and braid-outs.

And for those who say there isn't such a thing as no curl pattern has not seen every head of hair in this world.

I think everybody does. It may not be easily defined and the curls or coils may be too small to notice without focusing on it, but I think everyone does.

Maybe it would help if someone defines what having a curl pattern means.I would assume even the zigzag pattern is a type of curl pattern or is that assumption wrong?

That is what I am assuming as well. If it is not straight it is considered some type of curl pattern, thus the curly girl term of fractal curl which means some fraction of the strand is not straight. Perhaps it would be easier to accept if it was said your hair is either straight or it has some type of pattern.

I didn't think I had much of a curl pattern until recently. As my hair gets longer I can see the curl pattern better.

Also about a month ago, I put egg yolks and some conditioner in my hair, shampooed it out and my curls clumped together for the first time, especially in the back. It never occurred to try to make my curls to clump in the past so now I plan to experiment with that a bit.

I currently keep my hair stretched 99% of the time.

I always thought that as well but I wasn't sure. I know there are different degrees of curls, like slightly, small, big coils etc. Thank you. Now I might have to get this book. I just bought longhairdontcare's book (YT) called 10 steps to transition from relaxed to natural.

"a wash-n-wth" LMAO hahahaha!!! :lachen: For me I already know I'm going to be the twist out Queen. I love a good twist out. Thanks :)

Check it out from the library if you can. Even though it talks about curl types, I think they still lumped a lot into fractal curl. So if you have tiny curls like mine they really don't address that too much. And you can find a lot of the stuff about their curl pattern details on their website.

Not everyone ,especially when after trying most "curl defining" none seem to bring out any curls,it's most probably because there isn't a curl pattern .

Im pretty sure I might've run into a few people that I would say didn't have a curl pattern. Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you! I definitely will do that. :yep:

yeah I would think zigzag would be wavy, some type of curl. It gets so confusing and I guess sometimes I'll see threads, or even on another hair forum I'm on I keep seeing the " What's my hair type" "I'd go natural if I have some curls" and you know stuff like that. It makes me wonder ya know? If I'm going natural, i'm doing it regardless of what pattern my hair has. I pray everyday "God please help me to accept whatever type of hair you gave me, Amen" thanks to Hair Crush

how to you keep your hair stretched? I may need to know how to do that later.

I hope you do love your hair and whatever curl pattern or lack thereof you have.

But I like to keep it real, I'm not a kumbaya chick and neither is my hair  Me and deva battle a lot. So accepting your hair is great and then there is my real life, day to day battle :yep: So I have no issue when people say I would go natural if... Because I am natural and it ain't no joke for me. So I know what they mean.

I hear ya. I was relaxed for over 20 yrs. If I really feel like I can't handle natural, I can always go back but at this point, I don't want to anymore.

Yes more and more people are making the switch. People I have known for years that I didn't think would be natural are going natural. This morning a woman that I knew years ago stopped me at the light to ask me if I did my hair myself and said she wanted to transition but it was hard. So I hooked her up with this site and also gave her the name of a stylists.

At first I thought it was really rude when people said they would only go natural if they had good hair. But I think Ive gotten over that. They have a preference. And I would much rather they stay relaxed and enjoy it than to go natural, hate it, and bash naturals.

As for the OP, no not everyone has a curl pattern. And i really cant limit myself to the 4a/4b etc that people follow because although i have tiny coils and curls, I also have plenty more other strands that dont fit anything Ive seen. I have hair that doesnt curl but is obviously kinky. That doesnt make those strands type 1 because apparently only silky hair can be type 1. I think that during your transition, you shouldnt even be concerned with curl pattern. Focuson health and accepting yourself. Curl type is for the birds

I think everybody does. It may not be easily defined and the curls or coils may be too small to notice without focusing on it, but I think everyone does.

BraunSugar - when you say "everybody", can I assume that you're just talking about black people?

Co-signing with kupenda :I have some hairs that grow in a loooooong curve, root to tip. Like 2a or something. KINKY 2a. I have some that are straight until they double-zig-zag in the middle then they're straight again to the ends. WTF? Detangling has never been an issue for me, a comb always runs through my hair no matter wet dry or dirty but my hair is still muy kinky has zero natural shine and is less silkier than 99% of the heads I've seen on this site.

Yes I am. I just used the word everybody b/c the OP did. I assumed she meant Black ppl.

Well I don't care about hair type either I just want mbl hair but what I notice is my hair was basically transitioning for years under my weaves, but last year.I.permed my hair.in the.front for a center part and recently cut off the relaxed ends this may ,and what I notice is my hair in the back and sides is a 4o curl pattern ,but the middle is 4a and the bang area wear I cut the relaxed ends are really thick but so soft and curly like a thick 3b.Anyway I was wondering is that because I cut off the relaxed ends without transitioning all the way?
