Does Anyone's Hair ONLY Like LIGHT Protein?

Hi all!

I'm starting to think that my hair only likes light protein. For the past 2 and a half weeks, I've been using Aubrey Organics GPB (DC with heat on dry hair) followed up with a moisturizing conditioner, Salerm 21 and then rollersetting on the low/cool setting. My hair has been coming out SOOO soft and shiny. Plus, I've noticed fewer smaller hairs and less breakage. My comb glides through.

Sounds great, right?

Well, at my last wash, I decided to use Aphogee 2 Minute Treatment rather than my Aubrey Organics GPB. It seemed like everything was going to turn out okay.

BUT...

Even though my hair is soft, I am definitely noticing more dryness and breakage.

I think my hair really only likes light protein. I'm going to switch back to only doing the Aubrey Organics GPB DC twice a week with my usual stuff and only using Aphogee prior to a relaxer.

Anyone else notice a similar reaction when it comes to protein?

I notice that frequently light protein is better for me than heavy protein. When I use heavy protein, I only use it for half the time prescribed. The only "heavy" protien I can use for the full time is Nexxus Emergencee.

My hair doesnt like heavy protein at all and I only use it in an emergency when all else fails. 9 times out of 10 in the past, it made my hair worse. I love GPB! Between using GPB, ORS replenishing, henna, and indian oils...my hair seems to have just about the perfect moisture/protein balance. I think that is about as much protein as my hair can handle. Im still on the fence about the joico reconstruct system (chelating pool, cuticle sealer, kpak reconstructor, followed by moisturizing conditioner)...Im afraid to use it too often, though I do think it is beneficial. My hair will start breaking if I even just use daily moisturizers with protein. This is one of the few things Ive learned about my hair on this crazy journey!

As I reflect on your question, I am just now realizing that my hair only likes light protein. My hair gets to acting crazy when I put that aphogee in it...Idk, but my tresses love Lekair Cholestoral...So I use that.

same here. I threw out all my hardcore ones.

My hair HATES heavy protien. It only likes light or oil based i.e silk amino acids, coconut/reg milk, or avocado. I was using ""fortifying" and "strengthening" shampoos and cons for years with no idea why my hair was always so dry and brittle. Now I know that I need LOTS of moisture, and a light easily absorbed protein.

I use Affirm 5 in 1 with each touchup It doesn't leave me dry or hard. My last touchup sustenance was used and I feel like it was stronger and harder I don't care for it. I prefer the 5 in 1. In between,my hair only likes collagen & ceramide and some milk in dcs. I have to be careful with silk and wheat in products because it can be too much at times. I can however use silk protein weekly in leave ins.Go figure.

Yeah, Me! I've learned the hard way as well. In fact, it took my hair 4 weeks to recover from an application of Emergencee! Now, I stick to Aveda DR, henna and avocado and SAA for my protein.

ETA: I've recently added 35% Motions CPR to a moisturizing prepoo, and that has worked out as well.

I thought it was just me!!

My hair only likes light protein. I use the Motions CPR Protein Reconstructor only when I get a touch up. I think that it's considered moderate. I even have to take it easy on the ORS Mayo. I use it every other week (when I'm not stretching). I had to add some oil to increase the moisture. My hair doesn't like a lot of protein. :yep:

My hair seems to like light protein the most but since using lye I haven't tried the heavy stuff. I thought the 2 min reconstructor was light.

I know when I was no lye my hair only liked very light protein.

I use this once a week mixed w/ a creamy conditioner, usually NTM condish and my hair loves it. Everytime I have used a hardcore protein conditioner I get the snap crackle pops! I have had a MAJOR set back, so I'm working my way back. Help me, Lord.

my hair doesnt like protein frequently butit can deal with the heavy stuff if needed but i cant even use that ors con every wek without my hair feling like the sahara i need lotsa moisture

My hair prefers light and frequent versus heavy and occasionally.

Salerm 21 is one of my favorite silk leave-ins. I also have SAA, wheat protein, and collagen. I add them to just about everything.

I don't like heavy protein at all. My hair feels like stra after like say LeKeir Cholesteral treatments. I do like light protein treatments. Panteen makes a really good one called "Pro-V Restoratives Breakage Defense Conditioner." It works wonders for me. :)

I've never used anything hardcore. My hair is sensitive to protein and so far I've used the Keraphix reconstructor and henna safely.

I never understood why I couldn't get the protein thing right, until I read about silk protein here. Now, I use silk peptide powder, silk amino acids, and wheat proteins mixed with my phytojoba for a weekly treatment - my hair is very happy with me. It was a bit of trial and erros to figure this out, but now that I have, this is what I will continue to do.

I ONLY use mild proteins on my hair. I've been using Aubrey Organics GPB since 2000, and I still love it. :yep: My hair doesn't need a hard core protein treatment, so I would never use one.

Same here. Aphogee messes up my hair like you wouldn't believe. I tried to apply in so many different ways in the beginning. I've given up.

I use GPB (once a week when I get past 10 weeks), ORS replenishing pak (once every 2 months or so), and VO5 cheapie conditioners to co-wash in the summer.

Question: Salerm 21 and Lacio lacio are both light protein moisturizers, correct? I want to add a light protein to my leave in rotation. I'm going to try a search but can anyone weigh in on which they like more on relaxed strands?
