Just wanted your opinions on this debate. Some feel that states should regulate braiders in a similar manner as cosmetologists. Others believe that they shouldn't.

What do you think?

I doesn't bother me just as long as they do it well and they know what they are doing. Remember having a liscence doesn't mean you knbow everything there is to know!

I think they should be licensed. It sets a standard. But I don't think they should have to go through a traditional beauty school program just to braid hair. They should have a special program for braiders and natural (chemical free) hair care people.

They don't need to be ( at least in MD) because they don't deal with chemicals like relaxers or hair dye.

Yeah, I agree with the special program too. Their not administering chemicals so to go through a full thing would not make sense.

But basics and general haircare .

A certificate, maybe not a license per se.

I dont know. The licensed ones I went to were the ones who always screwed people over. Not all over them but enough to make you wonder if they were giving out licenses at gas stations. i have had people without licenses do a better job on my hair but that is not always the case. i feel if they want to make it mandatory for you to have a shop to have a license then they should be serious about the rules and regulations and not just let anyone get one. and the person should not only know how to do the service but how to care for the hair as well. God bless you all.

i really don't think so but if they did i like sassy girls idea

I think they should because I had a at home braider do my hair and did not realize where my hair was and the dang gone weave was and burned over an inch off of my hair a few months ago and it is just growing out from that.In this case you should be able to either sue or beat the crap out of someone without going to jail for assault.

I would think it would depend on the kind of braider u are. For example, if u were going to a braider that was recommended by someone by heresay but they didnt work proffesionally in a salon then it shouldnt necessarily be a must whereas if u worked in a proffesional salon then it should be a must to braid in a public salon. Just my 2 cents....

Yes, they do use scissors often! To trim off the fuzzies on the braid at the end. I just try to watch to make sure they're only trimming the area that extends beyond my natural hair.

I don't think they should because even if they're licensed thats not going to keep them from not braiding tight and other bad habits they have.

I am so sorry to hear about that but i do feel where your coming from. I guess i sorta loss my fate in license beauticians because one took my mother's hair out when i was a child and i saw how hard it was to get her hair back.

I do know that my mother wanted to

until she got tired.

I dont think braider should have to have a license because if they are gonna jack ur hair up a licese wont prevent it from happening

Ditto to some of the other comments - just because they're licensed doesn't mean that they'll do a good job and not practice bad habits. Personally, it doesn't bother me as long as they do a good job and my hair isn't falling out after 2 months because they pulled too tightly. Plus, I'll bet that it they're licensed they'd charge way more money to braid. I wouldn't mind paying more if a license meant something as far as knowlege goes. They're not using chemicals, so it doesn't matter to me.

They should be licensed that way they get educated on their client's hair and the harmful chemicals in these chemically treated hair they use to braid. I think it would just make them more aware of what they are doing and maybe they will avoid pulling your hair out the scalp for those that do
