Do you ever feel out of place...?

I'm out right now at a lounge. When I left my house, I felt cute with my Kim K inspired high bun. But everyone here seem to have a weave. Not knocking weaves...but idk. I just feel like old-fashioned/out of place...

Do you all ever feel that way?

I never feel out of place when wearing my real, natural hair. If anything, I feel uncomfortable when I'm in my wigs, even though I really like them....especially if they happen to be straight.

i know what you mean. i tend to feel out of place too cause most of the black girls out here either have ratty relaxed hair or a weave/wig

so when i walk up with my natural hair down i always feel like i'm getting the side eye and half the time i am, or i'm getting the "its probably fake" look...

anywhoo.... i've learned that the only women who love my hair the way i do are the women on these hair forums. irl, women tend to try and tell me everything THEY think is wrong with my hair and what i should do to fix it (cause i always listen to bald chicks you know :look: )

Yes, one girl at work is constantly teasing me about my buns. She has no edges... :-/

I love it and have gotten a few compliments from it too.

Yes I feel out of place sometimes amongst all the weave but most of the lengths I see are around the same length as my natural hair so it makes me feel better.

The first time I felt that way was last weekend when I went out and had my hair straightened. OMG I wanted to leave early because I just didn't feel confident/comfortable. I was constantly touching my hair to make sure everything was in place, I didn't want to accept drinks from guys (you know, that were bought at the bar) because I just felt like 'I look ugly...why are you talking to me?' and was just overall extremely bashful and unapproachable.

I usually wear my hair in a bantu knot out/other natural looking, kinky-esque style when I go out places, so I wasn't used to the straight style...I won't be doing that again anytime soon :nono: I prefer wearing my transitioning hair 'naturally' when I go out. I always get tons of compliments from everyone :)

Glad you brought this up, coz today I set my hair with satin rollers and combed out my bob. Presentable enough, I had shampooed and DC'd my hair with Joico earlier this week. A male friend who only sees me in braids had a shocked look on his face and said, "did you do something to your hair?!" Then I went to the grocery store and I was walking by a bunch of girls in weaves and wigs that were cute, and I kinda felt weird. (Like I should have worn one too). I guess it's coz I'm normally in braids and this is my first time wearing my hair out in a few months. One of those "low self esteem moments" I guess.

I feel you and yes I do. I was wearing a twist out when I went to a friends birthday at a club. Most of the ladies I saw that night had on long lace front wigs with that terrible barbie doll hairline ( there was even a platinum blond one) or they had weaves. My sister and cousin were wearing their real relaxed hair and Im natural my sister even said she felt out of place. When whip my hair came on I was whipping without a worry though. I did notice I got no male attention that night which is unusual whoever said men prefer real hair lied lol.

Nope - honestly I usually don't even notice. Only time I did was during All Star Weekend.

And re: the BSS, when I go I always find it funny when I'm in there with my big hair browsing gels and conditioners, and then there are a few women in there with scarves on asking the sales associate where the color 4 remy is. They usually look at me funny, and I'm not sure why, but I usually just shake my hair and KIM.

I can't update/reply to every post cause I'm on my phone but I'm reading all the responses between dances...and drinks lol

Men are full of crap. 90% of the time they can't even tell a weave or lace front from real hair.

Why did you notice during then?

Why did you notice during then?

During All Star Weekend I met up with my friend from college at her hotel, and there were a ton of people walking around about to go out under the lights and I could tell it was weave...when it's dark and I'm in the bar/lounge, I'm tryin' to get my drink and my two step, so I'm not paying attention to them.

One of the best things about my natural hair is that I feel it puts me out of place - in a better place, the way I feel about it. I don't feel like I'm faking it... what could be better than that?

ETA: I was apprehensive at first because I expected to feel self conscious. The first time I wore my natural hair out as an adult, I wore the braidout from a sew in, so the afro was HUGE... I got compliments and asked out by a random Russian man! So positive reinforcement off the bat may have worked. I also live in an area/community where most of the black women tend to have natural hair so I'm not any different from them.

Tbh, the only thing I don't like is the length... I want longer hair, LONGER HAIR, and I want it now!!!!

In certain places. The beauty supply store is one of them.

 It's funny because my local BSS guy knows me, but I think he is curious about why I only buy products or rollers, etc. Or sometimes I just go in and look around :look:. I feel really awkward in there, though....especially one day when I was in the BSS and a lady got arrested for stealing eyelashes :ohwell:.

Surprisingly, my date thought my bun was nice. The Kim K/Kourt K high buns are too cute to me. Kourtney seems to make hers a little sloppy Kim's are a little sleeker, but I like both styles!

If I could find someone to do a weave for me like Reniece & dontspeakdefeat, I might get one.

lol no...my buns are beautiful.

lol - I'm working on being more creative with mine!

I'm surprised that you feel out of place. If anything, I would think you'd feel superior seeing as how most of the women there were wearing fake hair and your hair probably looked 10x better than theirs and it came from your scalp! :yep:

And to Boujoichic, girl, you were at a club, those dudes weren't lookin for wifey, they were lookin for Ms. Tonight! So of course they'll look past the woman who cares enough to take care of her own hair and has the courage to wear it in it's natural state. They're tryin to get to the insecure chick behind you with that raggedy weave!

(Not that all weave-wearers are insecure, but the "typical" one probably is, in my opinion.)

i feel out of place at the bss 'cause i'm the only one in the product aisle. everyone else is in the weave/wig section. on a good note, i never have to worry about a product being bought out! (so hurry up, Argan CON!)

The only time I feel out of place is when I do a wash and go, run out of the house and I'm not really sure how it looks once dried. I could look AWESOME or a HAM LOL

The only other time I feel uncomfortable is if I straighten my hair and its super long, but the women around me all have short hair. I always get compliments from other women so I'm not sure why it makes me feel like I'm "showing off" since for all I know they may want their hair short.

The only time I feel out of place is around my husband's family. I get tired of the gawking and discussions around how I wear my hair. It's odd enough to be the only black person in the room, but when they go in on my head I feel all types of strange. I have to really hold my tongue for my inner hood girl not to come out. :ohwell:

The only time I may feel awkard, is when I'm in the middle of a stretch and my roots are looking a mess. Other than that if you catch me on a good day (less than 3 weeks post) you will see me in a fresh doobie wrap or straight-haired style with my head held high :yep:
I would walk into a room full of weave-heads and show off the hardest lol.
I'm jst sayin........

I feel out of place but I LOVE it. When I go out clubbing with my friends 90% of the girls have weaves and the other, say, 9% have straightened or relaxed hair. I'm one of a very few with big, curly hair and people always compliment me on my hair. Once, one guy who came over to talk to me/buy me a drink (black) even said what attracted him to me in the first place was my hair. :)

When I'm at a black function my hair is longer than 99.9% of the people there. So yup I feel a bit out of place. Especially when it comes to the stares and silence when I show up. :look: Awkward! But I don't care. I run my fingers through my hair and keep it moving.

I'll be in a BSS and I'll be the only one in the aisles that actually sell product. Everyone else in the weave section.:lachen::lachen:

Lol @ weave-heads

I guess I have a case of weave-envy

Wow...seems like it should be the opposite way around. Not knocking weave wearers because I might do a protective style every once in a while. Just not my choice to wear it and hide my hair forever by seems like the Weave wearers should feel out of place. Look what has become of the weave industry in the last 20 years or so...
