Do It Yourself Sew In

Hello!

I want to attempt to do a sew-in on a family member. I've seen some tutorials but I'm sure it looks easier than it really is. Lol. Has anyone gotten brave enough to do one on your own? How did it turn out? Any tips?

They are that easy. I've done my own for the past 10 years. Make sure the braids aren't tight and don't make the thread to long as it can knot up.

I failed horribly. I watched numerous ytube videos for weeks but from my mishap, I realized that I'm a visual person and can't go by just touching. I had three bundles but somehow I managed to sew only 1.5 bundles. My sister felt sorry for me and did the sew in for me but she clowned me badly
I can make a good closure wig though...

I started doing my own sew ins when I was 16 and did them myself for 10 years. I don't weave anymore but it was super easy and this was before tutorials and youtube videos. My hair was always fab and natural looking. Never learned how to do a closure though I always just had leave out.

The sew in I have now is self installed, short pixie done with 27 pieces hair.
It came out nice for my first time.

I was nervous because I'm good at doing other styles, but don't have a clue when it comes to any kind of weave.

Watching tons of YouTube videos helped.
I watched so many sew in videos it came to a point I felt confident doing it myself.

That very first track in the back took 10 minutes, had to get my swag with positioning the track and sewing. After that first track I had a good hand on it.

There's different ways to braid hair under the weave. Depending on the style, whether full weave or leave out, will set the foundation for how you will braid the hair under in order for it to lay flat.

IMO braiding the hair with braiding hair will help keep the style intact for an longer time.
And sewing in a net helps keep braids protected and organized under the weave.

Take your time, take deep breaths and you will do just fine.
It's a learning curb but lucky you have people to practice on

Thank you for the tips! That's one thing I definitely plan on doing. Watching a million YouTube videos!

I've been loving crochet braids lately but up to recently sew in were my go to protective style. I think the braid pattern is key. It can determine how your hair lays and lasts. Using a net is very helpful when starting out. It ensures correct track placement and can prevent gaps. I recommend nylon thread over cotton. It glides through the braids better and doesn't tangle on itself. I can do someone's sew in in two hours but it takes me twice as long on my own head. I usually braid my hair and maybe sew in a third of the hair then finish the next day. YouTube has taught me almost everything I know about weave. I still search there for new techniques. Just take your time and don't be too hard on yourself if your first time isn't perfect. Good luck!
