Jan. 13) - The couple for whom a kidney donation has become a $1.5 million sticking point in divorce proceedings squabbled publicly Monday during a Long Island court appearance, according to the New York Post.
"This is a man who put his life on the line, and his wife treated him like a piece of dirt, garbage," said an attorney for Richard Batista, who claims his wife cheated on him after the transplant, according to the Post.
Dawnell Batista's lawyer called the allegations against his client "grotesque," and called her husband "hyper- suspicious." Batista, 49, a surgeon at Nassau University Medical Center, gave his wife a kidney in 2001, and he wants his organ back -- or the payout in return, Newsday reported.
Dawnell Batista, 44, filed for divorce in 2005.
The couple have three children, ages 8, 11 and 14. Kidney problems have plagued Dawnell Batista throughout her life. The transplant using the kidney of her estranged husband was her third, after her kidneys failed during her third pregnancy.
The couple appeared in court concerning a gag order, which Dawnell Batista had requested after her husband alleged she committed adultery, the Post said. The court denied her request.
