In hair purgatory
I really would like my cousin to start her hair journey. She used to have healthy thick collarbone natural hair. After getting a relaxer hair hair hasnt been like it used to be and now is EL-NL and breaking.(She is wearing a weave right now so I cant quite tell) She is somewhat intrested in hair care after seein LF units being installed on Youtube. But I want her to be interested in growing her real hair so I showed her this site. Now she is totally disintrested after seeing the pictures because she thinks it could never be her hair(oh she got that gud hurr syndrome). She claims to have tried numerous prouducts to grow her hair such as pantene relaxed & natural line, optimum oil therapy, Dr. Miracles, Hot oil treatments, motions, tressemme, wave nouveau, beeswax, olive oil, garnier fructis, herbal essences, Pink oil lotion line, Just for me, head & shoulders and "going natural".(i know products alone dont bring hair growth)Sometimes I feel like giving up on her. I keep trying to explain to her the basics such as "black hair does grow but you have to retain" but Its not gettin through. She might be more open to ideas from people who have relaxed hair too. PLEASE HELP LHCF!

Unfortunately she's using all the wrong products. The only decent one listed is Tressemme.

Well you can only lead a horse to water, can't force it to drink. If she already has a negative feeling about her hair then the only thing you can do is lead by example. Or maybe you can offer to do her hair, show her what you're doing with your hair, etc... Its one of those things that you can't force people to be all excited about. Kinda like people that say they'll always be overweight and end up not losing weight, thus fulfilling their prophesy. Just concentrate on your hair, give her some encouragement, and hope she snaps out of it.

Oh and for the love of God please don't let her buy anything from Dr Miracles!

Very true. It's not going to happen overnight. If some people don't see 6 inches after 1 wash, they assume something doesn't work and is hopeless. Also, changing your products doesn't really help if you are still blow-frying your hair, hot curling, and flat-ironing every day.

The most compelling argument you can make is your own progress. Every time she sees your hair thriving, her resistance will break a little more. Keep a simple, "go to" regimen in your head, (basic deep condition, gentle combing/low manipulation, minimize heat,etc.). Every time she asks for a recommendation, give her the same answer. That will keep your frustration down. It can get very annoying when people keep approaching you and you go out of your way coming up with a personalized, unique regimen for them and then they don't follow it. If she hears the same information enough, she might actually start to follow some of it. If she doesn't, you haven't expended any extra energy.

thanks for the replies. i had shown her my progress but she thinks my hair is "diffrent".
