Hi ladies,

I have a real bad problem with dry scalp. I think it may be psoriasis but I'm not sure. Can anyone recommend any treatments that you know for sure that works. Things I've already tried:

Head and Shoulders (Intense)
Selsen Blue
Nizoral
Pantene R&N for Dry scalp
T-Sal
T-Gel
Tea Tree Oil
Apple Cider Vinegar
Flax Seed Oil

I wash my hair one to two times a week. I usually let the shampoo sit on it for awhile, but one to two day later, the danduff comes right back. Please please any other recommendations that you know work please let know of.

T-gel worked best for me. It was my last resort. It worked wonders for me even though the smell will stick around for awhile. It smells like tar (ingredient). I was worried that it was going to dry out my hair so I put it in an applicator bottle and applied it to my scalp directly and left it on for five minutes and it worked just fine. After two uses, my dry scalp worries were gone because I use to have a dry, scaly patch in my head. I'm glad that is gone now. I hope that helps a bit.

i am no dandruff expert, and i have never really had a serious problem....

but i find that my hair is less itchy since i started putting neem oil in my shampoo, it STINKS but it really cleans my scalp, i also dont even feel the need to wash my hair as often since i started doing this....

i hope someone else with more experiance can help you out more.

Vatika oil on the scalp regularly. It has neem oil in it to control dandruff as well as henna helps with dandruff too. My mom has been using it regularly (at my insistence:lol:) and her dandruff is gone, no flakes, nothing.

Nothing's surefire, but there's an Indian Oil called Navratna Herbal Cool Oil that I use on clients with dandruff or scalp issues. I apply it directly to their scalp, massage in, and then layer on the deep conditioner we're using. I put on a cap and place them under the dryer for the dc session.

They all love what it does for their scalp and the tingling it provides.

I also give them a daily scalp oil blend that helps.

Keep trying, you'll find something!

I use to have this very problem. I tried it all. The solution for me was very simple. Oil the scalp with a light oil. Are you oiling your scalp at all? I never did before LHCF because I didnt think I need it. Now that I have learned better, I love oil!

*Just avoid mineral oil like the plague on your scalp!*

I have tried all the things you said. Nothing worked like this and Keracare dry and itchy scalp shampoo, conditioner and grease. The key was zinc. But again not all zinc products work well. These have worked for me. Also, I was surprised to say the MTG worked. I put it on my scalp with a plastic bag everyday for a week. No more problems for three months. I was surprised as hell. Also, the first time I used it it stinged like hell.

I've had dandruff for years, and although it still persists, it is less severe since I've stopped using Shampoos with SLS (sodium laureth/laurly sulfates) and ALS (ammonium laurel sulfates). These are very harsh detergents that can irritant the scalp. Most commercial shampoos have them. What shampoo are you using? I would recommend using a more natural/organic shampoo such as Jason Jojoba, Giovanni Tea Tree or Nature's Gate tea tree. Or any one you can find with as little detergants as possible.
I agree about the Indian oils. Vatika oil and neem are great for combatting dandruff. Neem definitely has a strong smell, but is effective. But lately I've been using pure Jojoba oil (which is similar to our scalp's own sebum) on my scalp, sometimes mixed with a little bit of lavender and rosemary oil, all three good for dandruff.
Apple cider vinegar rinses help alleviate dandruff, too. Hope this was helpful:)

What worked for me after many years was washing 2X week, with one of those times being conditioner only. Before then I washed once a week and just figured dandruff would be a way of life for me.

I've been using Nature Gate's Tea Tree Shampoo for almost 3 months now. I found that Head & Shoulders made my dandruff worse. I've heard crushing 3 asprins and adding it to your shampoo is supposed to help. I've never tried it though.

Head and Shoulders and T-gel didnt do anything for me. The only thing that works for me is apple cider vinager.

I second the Nature's Gate. Also you can try putting a tablespoon or so of Sea Breeze into your regular shampoo. Also I found that adding a little tea tree to whatever oil I'm using on my scalp keeps the flakes away.

And the less product I use the happier my scalp tends to be. I used to pile on products and my scalp flaked and flaked and flaked. Now all I use on my scalp is doo gro oil, nothing else and I only rarely have flakes anymore.

I'm with Delp's solution regarding the DHS/ Zinc shampoo. It WORKS! My stylist uses Design Essentials lo-lye relaxer and my hair loves it but I always get a dandruff reaction from it. Just me and another girl are the only ones. I didn't want to stop using it so she uses DHS shampoo to counteract it and it works. It's because of the zinc. One of her clients is dermatologist and brought it in.

You can get DHS from any grocery store or CVS, Rite Aid, etc. Just go to the pharmacy and ask for it. They may not have it on hand so you may have to order it but it only takes a couple of days.

if your hair is stinky... then it's definitely dandruff and I'd do vinegar rinses daily... no co-washing... no conditioner on scalp.

But if your hair isn't stinky, it isn't dandruff. I'd just eat collard greens and take B-Complex vitamins everday.

Co-signing! And I HAD the worst dandruff on earth! Big nasty flakes that would bleed. So embarassing.

That's me...when I was relaxed I would never oil my scalp, and I had the worst dandruff every. When the stylist would comb out my roller set and try to wrap it flakes would be all over the place. Now that I am no longer relaxed, I oil my scalp and I never see any dandruff.

I feel your pain but when I had a dandruff problem I used all the products in bold and nothing worked. Believe it or not, what worked was Sulfur 8 grease. I applied a bit to the problem area and that was it. Another product that was good was Scalpacin...

FYI, IMO when I had this issue I didn't believe it was dandruff, what I believe it was was fungus. Is your dandruff dry/or moist and/or smelly??? IMO, if it's moist then it fungus, something you can pick up from dirty combs and brushes and I always seem to get this fungus when beauticians been doing my hair for a while. It never fails to happen, I'll go in with my scalp on point and by the time they are finished I'm suffering from dandruff/fungus whatever it is. Now that I'm doing my own hair(3 yrs now), and even thou sometimes I wash every 2 weeks, I never experience any dandruff -- now go figure..

I was going to suggest this as well. Perhaps it looks like dandruff, but it is not. Have you been to a dermatologist? It could be a fungus or other scalp infection, perhaps psorisis or exzema? I have been reading about the Indian herbs and other Ayruvedic treatments - perhaps those are worth a try. Check out the From Nature With Love website and read up a bit. It may help.

A mixture of herbs in powder form and/or mixed with oils may prove beneficial to both the scalp and hair.

Some shikakai with a little neem powder made into a paste and placed on the scalp. Add a little henna if you'd like. These three things will help very much with itching and help facilitate a healthy scalp environment.

In the past, I have used the prescription Nizoral with success. My stylist has used the Affirm Relaxer for Dry and Itchy Scalp which contains coal tar. And occasionally she uses the Keracare Shampoo for Dry and Itchy Scalp and the Design Essentials Therapeutics Rx Anti-Itch Hair and Scalp Treatment. Keracare has an equivalent product also in the Dry and Itchy scalp line.

Another line to consider is Kiti-Kiti. They have a medicated shampoo and hair grease also. You can view the products at Paynes Beauty Supply:

Good Luck!

Sulphur!! I use the plain yellow sulphur from Baldwins and mix it with Jamaican black castor oil and sweet almond oil. With one application, my dandruff disappeared, and I had it bad. Please try it. It's the sulphur in the MTG that stops the dandruff.

i have psoriasis and have used all the products that you listed except the Pantene R&N for dry scalp. nothing worked for me including many prescriptions that some dermatologists prescribed. i now use a triple assault. lol! i wash with prescription Nizoral (along with my moisturizing shampoo). i also alternate between Olux foam and Derma-Smooth oil after washing. a combination of those three products has calmed my scalp.

definitely try some of the stuff that others suggested because they might work for you, but be weary of some of the smellier stuff. if you do have psoriasis, because of the nature of a really porous scalp, the smells stay longer than they would for a "normal" scalp. when i tried the Sulfur 8 and pine tar back in the day, my hair would stink even after i washed again. that's another reason i can't use the MTG. pee-yew...
