Actually, it looks like a series of knots (like the first step in tying your shoe laces), with the ends twisted down the sides to join the pony tail. I like it. I may try it.

8 rows, and single strand flat twists on both the left and right sides. The flat twists are twisted towards the middle. After they did that, they took the flat twist ends and tied them in a knot in the middle. After that they carried the ends over to the opposite side. After that they flat twisted the ends in a two strand flat twist pattern going back on both sides.
***also, it could be that they wrapped one flat twist over another in the middle instead on knotting it.
