Could you go a whole year With just protective styling?

I was able to do this for a year when I wore my 3/4 wigs. It worked like a charm. I don't know when I will ever be able to do a bun with my hair out. That would be a fantasy, but I keep hope alive. :yep:

I could never. I'm ADDICTED to my 'fro. I've actually tried protective styling a few times by twisting my hair and pinning it up a la Andrea from the Fly Girl Blog. I thought I would keep it longer because it's such a cute and no-fuss look (even my boyfriend liked it) but true to form, I traded it in for a wash n' go after a few days. :perplexed

I did it for months at a time with weaves and it was very damaging to my hair. Now that my hair is healthy, I couldn't imagine ps for a year because I wear it out every single day either straight or twistouts/knotouts.
But once my hair is long enough to look good in a bun, I will be bunning it more and I'm looking into purchasing one of those fake buns...just haven't found a good one to match my texture yet.

I used to, I was in back 2 back braids and grew my hair out but it was really dry cause I wouldn't wash or DC/ moisturise until I took them out every 4-6 weeks. I'm thinking of going back to this in 2010 want to try for BSB next year.

I definitely plan to try and speed length retention and transitioning this year by bunning constantly. I plan not to wear my hair out for more than 2-3 days each month. A whole year w/ no out days...IDK. Tough, but I like a challenge.

Sounds like we intend to do the same thing for 2010. We should start our own personal challenge. :)

i honestly didnt think i could. But since august I've been bunning and I've really enjoyed it. Its quick, its smart and I dont feel like i'm straining my hair :)

I need new bun ideas though, but other than that, I heart my buns!

I believe I could... As long as i had 6hrs or so every couple months to do a length check :) But im perfectly fine with hiding my hair for very long periods of time

When I started high school, that was what I was doing. My hair was top of ear, and it was a new school, so I didn't want anyone to know my hair was a hot mess. Also, it was in the middle of nowhere, so no beauty salons.
So I wore my hair in micro braids all four years of high school. I went home every three months, relaxed, and put them back in. They took me from top of ear to shoulder in about a year and a half. And that was with jacked up hair practices.

So I could do it, especially with what I know now. But naw son..I'm not doing that again. :nono2:
Unless I transitioned.

In answer to the question, I can proudly say that I have just done it. Well...when BOOT CAMP 2009 is over, THEN I can say I've just done it...LOL! :yep: A whole entire year of nothing but protective styling. People think I totally have no hair.... Can't wait to see my hair again on December 21st. Hmmmm...I think for Christmas, I'll give myself an entire day with my hair out! Oh, joy!! :dance7:

No way. If I had braid extensions I could go 2 months max. Otherwise, I wouldn't make it past 2 weeks, max. I really like long hair, but not enough to sacrifice the way I like my hair to look and having fun with my hair.

2010 will be ride or die for ME!

I'm planning to cornrow once per month. Co wash, deep condition, scalp massage, steam, etc. all while in these plaits and only taking out to detangle and re-braid for the next month.

I don't plan to see my hair (entirely) loose until I hit BSL!

Yep.

I was wiggin it, but changed to buns when I misplaced my wig cap. I might go back, but I want to grow my edges and I dont wigs to mess with that. Although I liked putting my hair in 2 french braids under a wig. Much simpler.

I'm willing to make the sacrifice now, esp as I transition to see long and healthy hair

As of Jan 2nd of this year I have worn nothing but buns. I've been using variations of phony ponies for variety sometimes but it has been nothing but buns. I can't believe it's almost been a whole year. I'm going to a family gathering for Thanksgiving so I'll be wearing it out next week. But after that, it's going back up. I've decided I'm going to keep this up through the end of winter. My birthday is in March and I'll start to wear my hair out then.

I unintentionally did this when I transitioned; had my hair mainly in canerows and braids, except for when I wore a semi-fro style when I went to the Notting Hill Carnival for the last time back in 97!

I'm doing it right now with wigs. I've been wearing the wigs since June. I only wore my real hair once and that was in an updo because I was going to six flags and didnt want the wig to fall off the ride lol.

BUT I will say I am only doing this because a hairdresser did not wash out the perm properly and my hair fell out on the side so I had to cut it. If I didnt have to cut my hair, I WOULD NOT be hiding it.

I wont be wearing my real hair until it grows back which should be by next August. So that will make a year.

Dang, I wish I could! I just get so bored and after a while I stop feeling sexy :nono:

But boy, would I retain some LENGTH! :yep:

I might try a compromise (wear PS 20-25 days each month). I gotta have at least one out day a week or I'd go nuts

I agree.

I might try protective styling for a few months next year & see how that works. Nothing but buns! & then my bohbraz install is going back in. lol

Does wigs count. Because I wore wigs for a year when I was new to this. My hair was so short and I was so ashamed of it that I could not go out in public without one. I can't afford to purchase a wig now so I have to bun and I am not a fan of bunning. I would prefer to wear wig continuously. It is habit now. lol.

That's pretty much what I've been doing for about 1.5 years now, and I'm really enjoying the results so far, so "if it ain't broke..."

In 06 my hair was bleached and dyed chicken-head-red. You guessed it. It broke off something serious. Some spots were only 1 inch long. I grew out the color and my hair to APL in a year by wearing instant weaves.
The horrifying color - Don't judge me I was in High School lol
