Could it be some ppl will never have long hair??

I have very fine, thin to medium density, fragile 4b hair...plus I'm a slow grower. I had to come to an understanding that my hair will take longer to retain length then other hair types and I may never have the fullness or length that I see other ladies with. However, my goal is to grow my hair to it's full potential, I have yet to do that, so I have yet to see what my hair can do.

OP, give your hair the opportunity to show you what it can do...before you make claims to what it can't!!!

HHG!!!!

I believe that, barring any medical condition, anyone can have at least BSL hair. Some girls have it naturally and don't have to work at it. Some girls like me have to go hard! But, I can make a million excuses for myself- I am anemic, I have that "hard to grow hair", blah, blah, blah. But I don't. And now, I am going for BSL in 2010...something I thought I would never see.

You can do it and patience is needed to get you there. Just stop making excuses for yourself as to why you can't.

I think that most things are possible. I will say this though, the stat that always gets quoted that hair grows at .5 to 1 inch per month is an average, it doesn't mean that everyone's hair grows at this rate. There are always going to be outliers to any statistic meaning that there will be people whose hair grows more than an inch a month and people whose hair may grow 1/4 inch per month or even less. If you fall on this low end, it doesn't necessarily mean that there is something medically wrong with you or wrong with what your doing, it just means that you will need a little more patience in reaching your goal. But it doesn't mean you won't get there, so keep trying!

I'm no expert...but...

OP...it will be ok. sometimes it seems your efforts are worthless and its ok to get discourage regardless what the task at hand maybe...just as long as you don't have too long of a pity party but WE ALL HAVE THEM!!!! so you don't need a beating or a lashing :nono:

hair care is not the only thing that makes our hair grow...i will admit it plays a big part but its not 100% guaranteed! we are different individuals so our hair/bodies/etc. act differently to different things! i look at mixed women or women with a good/decent/better grades of hair....guess what 9 times out of 10 she's going to reach her hair goal before me....but that's ok. it is what you make it.

its ok to fall...just don't lay down....dust yourself off and keep it movin'!!!!! you'll be fine!

Okay?:look::sad::wallbash::nono:

I think the majority of time women who can't make it to a certain length have retention problems not growth problems. Sometimes it takes little or big fixes in a haircare regimen to make it to a certain hair length.

I equate it to money--I know I have the ability to earn it (grow it). I just need to be disciplined and not spend it (flat iron, cutting, etc.). :nono:

My heart sank when I opened this thread - I thought "oh no, maybe there are some people that cannot grow their hair, perhaps me being one of them" But phew....reading the posts, everyone can grow their hair, being sensible is a top one imo, playing the waiting game, moisturising and plain washing the hair!!Lol!!

Like i will never have long natural nails

Yes you can! Seriously, I used to think the same thing. Try using Duri Rejuvacoate Nail Strengthener and go to the Nail Fanatics thread pronto

I agree with the poster. I think it's physically impossible for some people to have long hair. I'm thinking about myself when I say that. I've tried everything- regular protein, the most expensive projects on the market. I baby it with roller sets and almost never use a flat iron or direct heat and when I do I use protectants. My hair was natural until I hit high school and even then it was never longer than a little past shoulder length.

I think that's bc it's just naturally thin. It's never
been what I want it to be but I guess I'm learning to accept and work with it.

I really think some pole with naturally fine hair- the diameter of the individual hair strand is so small that although their hair grow at normal pace it constantly breaks off bc it can't handle normal stress and that keeps it a certain terminal length.

I don't mean to be discouraging and I hope to
god this isn't true bc I've always wanted long hair but after all I've tried I'm beginning to believe it is. Nonetheless in will still continue to faithfully
lavish the best products and te greatest care on my hair hoping for the best.

I understand what you are saying Tiger, but I really think you are wrong on this one. I have seen some long thin haired divas and I think the key is about trying and waiting and moisturising. I must say though, my worst fear is that I am on this board in 2011 - 2012 with still neck length hair....Then I think I will cry!!!

Also tiger, when your hair was natural, did you wash your hair regular, con regular, steam regular?? That might have also played a major role if you did.

You must change your mindset. I really believe that's a big part of it. Yes not everyone is going to be hip or tailbone length maybe, but I think MBL should be attainable for all women. :imo: Don't know much of the genetics behind it though.

I used to wash once a week and condition it. Blow dry it in sections with a very wide tooth attachment and then get it braided, nothing tight, never put weave in it either. Just very simple styles. My sister has fine very long hair but I think it has to do with her individual strands being much thicker than mine. Obviously I didn't get that gene.

Did you make sure your ends were tucked away, did you try castor oil? I am only asking because my hair is also fine. I have been using JBCO the past few weeks and my hair has gotten a tad thicker. I think you should try EVERYTHING and not just for a little while, for as long as it takes for you to see some progress, hope is not lost for you, unless you let it be.

And I'll be frank. I don't believe that business about mindset. If all that were needed were desire we'd all have hair down to our feet by now. Just like some people will never really be thin bc that's not how their body is structured- they have big bones- and even if they were to lose most fat the frame pf their body dictates that they'd still be big.

I also suspect god has more important things to do than help me grow long beautiful hair- maybe that little war in Iraq or that situation in darfur.

That being said I'm still sure we can all make improvement so as to have our hair reach it's full potential whatever that may be and no one should ever give up on that endeavor. Just be realistic in the kinds of goals you set and your expectations.

Based on your assessment of your hair why blow dry if its fine and breaks easily. If you do blow dry you need to do the tension method with no comb use your hand to pull the hair down and blow dry at least 6" away from yo hair with a hot sock attached as well as heat protectant. Maybe you should also braid your own hair, care for it and see what happens. I am now a DIYer and I now know no one can do it like me. My hair grows better when I take care of it all the way!

Thats a good point, blow drying may be doing more harm that good. I never blow dry, I now always air dry.

god s concerned with everything that concerns you.
for ye with little faith But if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. I corinthians 11v14

Maybe god made some people to have long hair and others short just like he made some tall and short, some thin and some fat. There's variation in every other area of the human body why not intended hair length.

When you look at the grand scheme of things, then yes hair growing is hardly top of the agenda for most people. I do however think that God can multitask and if it is important to you, then so be it.

I am hoping you get more tips from the ladies here and then I am hoping you report back with some good news!!

genetics, health, technique, and retention.....

protective style and be gentle to your hair
wash, condition, pre-poo, deep condition and/or do protein treatments as needed
use minimal or no heat
keep it simple don't buy alot of products and don't jump on every growth bandwagon
excerise and eat plenty of veggies....yes they contribute to healthy hair
take a multi and efa 's msm and other supplements are optional but don't take too many
drink plenty of water
wigs, weaves, and half wigs are you friend and you never have to have a bad hair day!

Unless u have a medical issue its not impossible. Now with that said everyone may not get to MBL or WL but you can grow long hair. I had the same mindset and that's why I kept my hair with a tapered haircut for about 10yrs+. If u look at my fotki I started with damaged above ear length hair and now I am 2.5 inches from APL which suprised me and recently I changed my goal to BSB/BSL because I know its possible

Unless there is a medical condition, I think ANYONE can grow long hair. Hair just like nails is ALWAYS growing. My nails aren't that long because they break and tear. Same with hair. It's about retaining growth. I do believe there are those with slower growth rates (due to genetics/environment/nutrition) but hair does not STOP growing (unless med. cond.). And I also think ANY length is possible. Some say "well due to genetics, my hair won't grow past SL or APL etc." But there is no trigger/signal on your scalp that tells it "ok the hair is now 12 inches so stop growing." your scalp has no way of knowing whether u just cut your hair or not or how long it is. Therefore, cutting the ends does not suddenly trigger the scalp into growth mode (like some ppl think, and why they think trimming is necessary even when the ends are healthy) nor does the scalp stop growing hair once it is a certain length. It is all about retention which is harder for some than others and may take longer 4 others.

Hey Girl! @OP: I've been on this board since about 2004 and IT IS POSSIBLE!!!! You hear me!? My hair is definitely 4a/4b and not only have I grown it out long relaxed, BUT I bc'd in 2007 w/a mini chop in 2008 and my pressed hair is just above bra strap. I'm not even one to try every product/participate in every challenge.

I echo the sentiment about having a positive mindset. It starts w/accepting your hair for what it is. I have fine strand/dense/coarse/dry hair. Well, the only thing I can do about that is to moisturize it and try not to manipulate it. My natural hair will likely NEVER "hang" unless it's straightened . . . and that's cool. Be patient . . . you really will get there. :)
