Colored girls!

I need your help. I am about to get my hair colored this weekend... The first time I put hilights in it was a disaster..and I never even got to see any color b/c my hair is soo dark. So I will try it again.

I have a few questions..

What is the SINGLE MOST important thing for keeping breakage away?

For ex, Protein weekly? Oil daily?

Did you use bleach to lighten?

Lastly, Did you switch to a mild relaxer? Or did you continue using regular?

Any advice for me?

some amount of degree is necessary to lighten dark hair....

to prevent breakage moisturize....deep condition...u may want to step this up after u get highlights

The most important thing is protein. THis is where I messed up when I had highlights. I was basically oiling them down thinking that was the key, but that wasn't all my hair needed. It needed the protein too. I have only had highlights using the bleaching technique (done professionally each time). I wish I had found the boards when I had them as I would have known to use protein as much as I was trying to oil them down.

As for relaxer, I didn't switch to a milder form of the relaxer. At the time I had highlights I was getting my hair relaxed professionally. So, I didn't worry too much about the highlights. However, I do know that if you use bleach to highlight, you have to be EXTRA careful when relaxing.

I think if you balance your protein and moisture treatments you should be good. Maybe do a light protein every week (keraphix or something light) to help the hair stay strong.

ITA with Kaddy and Deedabug. You'll definitely need to step up on the protein and deep conditioning as well as a daily moisturizer or oil.

When you bleach/lighten your hair, you're actually "lifting" out "good stuff" in the hair strands, and you'll need to use an oil or daily moisturizer as a filler, or you'll suffer from breakage. Protein helps strengthen the hair, to prevent breakage and restore some of the "good stuff" that was lost from lightening. I'm not a cosmetologist, so I don't know the technical terms, but you get the idea.

Also, I think professional highlights are alot harsher than store bought brands, because the stylist often uses a higher concentration of bleach (developer). I prefer to use home "coloring kits" as opposed to home "highlighting" kits, because highlights in general are harsh, but depending on the person's hair, they may need a stronger concentration, to achieve desired results.

My last highlights were done professionally and I've had to give my hair LOTS of TLC to keep it from breaking, because it was very fragile. It's still in great shape, but it takes alot of work.

Sorry for rambling. Your hair is very pretty and healthy, so I think you'll be fine. Best wishes with your hair coloring! :)

Wow thanks for the detailed response Kitchen, it was very helpful..its funny because I was just printing out your hair color instructions from your hair journal.

I am going to bring T&T bronze to the salon this weekend. Thanks for the hair compliment!

Yup you need the protien like everyone says. I use Keraphix and Mane and Tail. Also if you dont, start sleeping with a satin cap or pillow case. It really helps keep the moisture.

Just make sure you don't show them my "homemade coloring instructions", because they'll laugh.

Also, if you're going to a "good" stylist/colorist, then they should be able to determine which developer level is best for your hair, if you decide to use their products. It just depends on how much you want your hair to lift. It doesn't take very much for my hair.

Oh yeah, I would suggest that use the foil method instead of the streaking cap, because you will get more accurate coverage, plus you won't run the risk of having the color leak down to the roots. I don't like the color to be directly on my roots. Plus the cap hurts. It just depends on what you want.

LOL@ homemade coloring instructions..

Well I decided to definitely use the T&T..i didn’t want to take a chance and use salon produts and it being harsh. I am definitely not going to a "good" hair stylist in a high end salon..just regular ol dominican hairdresser.

Okay sounds good I will use foil then. I brought the cap and streaking brush already b/c at one point I was gonna let my friend highlight my hair but I decided on a stylist. Thanks again for the tips Kitchen.

Thanks Glossy I will up my protein to 1x a week… followed by a moisturizing conditioner.

developer isnt mentioned much on the board when it comes to how much u r gonna lighten...well at least i havent noticed it....most ppl talk about the brand and color on the box...and what it will do with the shade u already have...

i need to brush up on developer knowledge if i decide to make my own ''kit'' to dye my hair anytime soon....any weight developer juss wont do...the higher the number the more the bleachin and the higher the risk....

knowing the correct developer number for ur hair really can make the difference in how well ur hair will turn out...

so why i hve not been doin this all this time??
