Chicago woman says Sheenique relaxer left her bald

I doubt she has a case. The fact that her sister used the same box perm in the morning with no side effect and not doing a strand test makes her 10 minute story sound a lot suspicious

:nono::nono: This is so very sad. I was told ( like a year ago) by a stylist that my hair should have NEVER been relaxed...:blush: Wow....

I feel so bad for this lady.....
 
Thats sent chils down my spine...MAN I could never roll the dice with my hair like that.....yeesh...:nono: soooo happy to be natural right now.....one bad box of relaxer and boom you could be straight BALD.

On the real though, I would never use something called sheenique on my hair....I've never even heard of that:rofl:

I feel so bad for that lady though....nothing but scraps of hair and bald patches left of that head:nono: Wow.
 
The report indicated there were two separate kits in the same box. The sister used one of them and she used the other. They did not relax with the same jar. I wonder if she had hair dye or other medical issues like they suggested in the clip. I feel bad for her.

I ain't gone lie, I used Sheenique back in the day. :lachen: That was back when it depended what the model looked like on the relaxer box. :lachen: and the Sheenique chick put Optimum and Dark N Lovely to shame. :lol:

I also agree that she probably doesn't stand a chance in court. I mean the strand test is how these companies cover themselves. With all the warnings associated with relaxing, it was negligent on her part not to do one.. :ohwell: It really is Russian Roulette when we relax no matter how you slice it. :ohwell: For every 99.9% success, you get someone who loses everything-- and some of them through no fault of their own. Others simply don't follow the directions and bring issues on themselves.

I don't know if anyone remembers the woman overseas who went completely bald using Optimum b/c she failed to properly neutralize her hair-- was her lawsuit successful? I remember her suing Loreal for damages. I mean unless the product wasn't as advertised, they left out the neutralizer bottle, or some key ingredient, I can't imagine that you'd get compensated for hair loss when they clearly tell you that it could happen.

That big old $5 dollar bargain sticker got me too. That's the kind you see at the Dollar General with mounds of dust on the box b/c the product doesn't "move" (become replenished on the shefl) regularly.

I agree with all of you ladies... but - sometimes we have to think about how poverty affects Black women... we are so blessed to have laptops, internet, and access to money and great stuff.... She may not have.... I dunno...I think other relaxers are 5 bucks right??? I have NO idea since I RUN from that stuff.....

I agree with Lucky's Mom! I use to buy Relaxer kits that were $5.00, so Idk what happened with her hair. I seen SHANEEQUE relaxer back in the day but never used it, I always used Gentle Treatment.

I don't think its the $5 alone per se b/c most relaxer kits on the shelf are about $5-7... I think it was more the "off" sounding name + the $5 bargain tag together. She could have easily reached for a more known and trusted Soft N Beautiful or Dark N Lovely for the same price.

Ahh.... OK.... :yep: I was not aware. I never used a box relaxer, so I would not be aware of the pricing..... Thanks for the clarification...
 
I wouldn't put a relaxer on my head called "Sheenique" anyway...but that's just me...

I feel terrible for the woman. I hope the damage isn't permanent.
 
I think that strand tests are important but most people/stylists never do them. I don't think I have ever gone to a stylist for a relaxer and they did.
People have different textures of hair and as such the hair is not going to react the same way. I don't think it really matters about the cost of the product or the brand. It's sad though.
I'm trying my best to stay natural but lawd these single strand knots are getting on my last nerves. :wallbash: After seeing Good Hair DH says no relaxers ever for me and the girls. I might go for a sew in next.

Well, many's the woman who's hair was "ate up" by Dark 'n Lovely or Soft N Beautiful. It's a very caustic chemical glop that you slather on your hair. Sometimes your hair will get dissolved.
 
That's terrible. I feel sorry for her. This is why you should do strand tests.

I've never had a problem in the 30+ years I've used a relaxer, and even EYE got chills looking at the video. Gracious.
 
$5 isn't excessively cheap for a relaxer; Mizani used to run me like $13 a box---so I don't know if the price is as much a factor as the chemicals in a relaxer. Calcium Hydroxide melts hair. Proven. She probably picked up whatever was on "sale" and was like I will have my sis hook me up when I get home. She has been relaxing for "years" so she is a pro at it now...little did she know she found Draino in a kit.

Stories like this are the #1reason I went natural. There are way better methods and techniques to straighten my hair temporarily if I want to without so much risk. Blowouts, flat irons, BKT, tension method, hot comb, weaves, wigs....


I hope her hair recovers or that she finds this forum---she needs it.

I had something similar happen to me in 1999 - I will never forget the experience. I bought my usual box kit - Creme of Nature (Super) and thought my hair was ok before applying the relaxer (my Aunt applied it for me), as I was rinsing it out, I saw clumps of hair in the bathtub... when we were done, ALL the hair on my right and left edges and a huge patch in the middle of my head was *gone* It was horrible :nono: My hair did grow back but I remember one time I went to a braid shop to get some braids so I could cover the patches, the ladies were speaking in their language - French - and I could tell they thought it was funny I had no hair on half of my head. It's a little funny now but then... :nono:

Strand tests are important and you have to make sure your hair is healthy (not breaking, etc) before applying a relaxer... I'm so glad I found forums.
 
i think she left it in too long... If there were a problem with the relaxer, the effects would be traceable among other people here sister included..


Unfortunately we get comfortable using products like these with out truly remembering the strength of the chemicals.. These really are chemicals and they are the same ones in hair removal creams... They will take your hair out if you don't test them.. Im sorry this happened to her, but i don't think the company is too blame.
 
Wow! this is horrible, not a laughing matter at all. I remember the Sheenique products, I didnt know they were still being sold. Sheenique had a whole product line and was in EVERY beauty supply store including Sally's. there were print adverstisements for this brand in Jet, Ebony, Essence & every black hair care mag. I dont think the price of the relaxer has any bearing on what it supposed to do. The same brand (sensitive scalp) double pak is currently being sold online for $8.29. All relaxers are manufactured to do the same thing. RELAX curly hair.

When I was in college I used a brand relaxer called Raveen and it only cost like $4.99 and it worked better for my hair than Revlon or Dark N Lovely.

Yes.............. I never remember a strand test in the 20 years I had a relaxer....... but - it feels like russian roulette.... either all of a sudden - or - over time. At least that is what it was for me.....:nono::nono: I don't ever want to play that game again.

There was a lady on People's court that also lost hair - claiming a "bad batch" of relaxer... She stated that she had relaxed her hair for decades with no problem... and then... baldness....
 
i'd never heard of this relaxer until today... i was in walgreens and i seen it on the shelf and thought to myself:another relaxer?...matter of fact they were on sale LMAO for 2.49... i would NEVER put no mess in my head that's named sheenique... i DEFINITELY wouldn't put a relaxer in my head that's only 2.49.
 
Sheenique is actually an old school relaxer, right up there with Bantu, TCB, and Gentle Treatment. I never used it. But I have used super cheap relaxers in the past and never experienced what this lady did. For her hair to fall out as she described, something chemically happened. Either that relaxer was a dud, or she had some kind of chemical service done to her hair prior to relaxing that doesnt agree with a relaxer.

From Revlon to Creme of Nature no lye to Optimum no lye. 20 years now.
Every time i had a mishap it was my own fault. putting it in myself not following directions. My hair fell out when i used Gentle Treatment once and had to cut hair to pixie cut. I think i didn't use neutralizer correctly or something.

I completely agree. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think relaxers can be dangerous. I had some issues with a so-called "professionally applied" relaxer (Mizani) at the salon.

The more knowledge I gain about hair care, the harder it is to justify the risk.

I guess I was trying to say that maybe she shouldn't blame the company, specifically.
