can we all agree that 5 years of wearing weaves, braids etc non-stop is long enough to grow your own hair to decent length? ok, great.

so can someone please tell me why people like janet, brandy, foxy, Kim, Maryj, vivica, naomi, tyra and pretty much everyone else is still needing a weave 10 years on??? i remember when mary released 'my life' in 1994 she was rocking that blonde weave. its been 12 years now... come on now... and dont even get me started on kim or eve!

these people earn millions and can afford the best supplements/ shampoos /treatments /lifetime supply of viviscal/ hf37 /nioxin

sure, maybe some people have BSL hair lurking under there, but after all those threads in the ents forum i think we can safely say that the majority dont.

so whats the deal

I would imagine that they wear the weaves/lacefronts/braids as their "protective" style. being in the limelight, having your tresses constantly exposed to styling, heat, color changes, etc...BUT still needing to look fab & wanting to protect your natural hair....yeah - i'd do the same exact thing.

i say the same thing all the time, its like the 8th wonder of the world...

They may not "need" a weave for length--- but they may still use weaves as protective styles from excessive coloring, straightening, heat, layering, etc...

Some of them are even using lacefronts for certain looks-- so no chemicals touch any part of their "own" hair.

I've even seen people wear hair pieces that are shorter, because they want a different look but don't want scissors to touch their hair.

Exactly what I was saying. We have some members here who are on loooonnnnggg term "protective styling" challenges. And all things considered, they have no reason to - other than the quest for healthy longer hair.

Now imagine being in the spotlight constantly, changing your hair with every public apperance...i don't think there is a member on this board who would say that they wouldnt wear some sort of protective style as well.

but seriously guys... is eve using protective styling? im sure thats what they want us to think, but all the celebs who actually have hair and wear it out dont seem to have any problems with all their hair falling off from heat/chemicals. after 10 years of "protective styling" shouldnt foxy have her own waist length hair. seriously.

It would seem. However there is the possibility that they don't want long hair all the time. Some people might keep their hair short and occasionally wear weaves. They may have no interest in actually having waist length hair.

I mean, Oprah does it. She uses the best products and has the best stylists, and she has plenty of hair, mostly worn out and sometimes done in a protective weave or braids. So as for these others, I think it is just loyalty to some stylist who ultimately does not care if the hair is long, or worse, thinks it makes her life easier when the hair is short. I mean, when you don't care, you don't care.

You have to understand that these people wear masks. That's what they do... all over the world, famous people are wearing hair that is not theirs. They want to look "Glamorous" without the fuss. Shoot, I know I'd like a wig right about now. My hair takes forever to dry!

A lot of people just like to switch it up. They don't care about hair care like you and me. They're too busy signing contracts, taking pictures, being in the limelight, etc.

Half of the wigs that Tyra and Beyonce wear, I want MYSELF!!! And I have thick hair, but I don't think I would ever be able to get my hair to look like those wigs; even after a rollerset. So, some of them just may not be able to acheive the look that they want with their own hair.

I think that alot of celebrities use weaves because of all the style changes and photo shoots and things in that nature. Those who wear their own hair and no weaves usually have what people consider good hair and they almost always wear it in their natural state. Example Tracee Ellis Ross she doesnt wear weaves but you dont see pics of her hair straight but only in its natural curls. Same thing for Cree Summer and Amel Larriuex (spelling is not correct) for most part. Those who dont have long hair and they have been wearing weaves and wigs for years, its probably because of how they take care of it while its weaved up. But Oprah hair besides when she had that short cut seems to be a lace front and it doesnt seem to be going anywhere. Every episode i see of her for like the last year it hasnt been her own hair.

Plus we can't assume that just because everytime we see them, that thats how they look in their "every day"

we've seen enough pictures of tyra sans the weave to know that she rocks cornrows underneath. we've seen pics of beyonce without the lacefronts and she's got a full hair of what most people assume is natural hair as well.

Being a performer, I know that Wigs and Weaves are necessary. As others stated constant styling of the hair, heat usage could led to potential long term damage. Why risk it? BTW under the stage lights is ridiculously hot! Lights from cameras (photo shots) are hot, add that with puting heat and pulling and tugging would equal highly damaged hair. Another thing is, entertainers love to change up their looks, I also thing right now that have weaves or extensions is a status symbol for celebs. How many of us 'regular' folks can afford $5000 weaves and a new one every 2 weeks?

Yeah most often when I read about their hair in the mags, that's basically what they say. They wear weaves to protect their own hair from being damaged from the constant heat/styling and also the lights.

Well, I understand what you're saying but if they aren't taking care of their hair under the weave or it was damaged and they didn't treat it before adding the weave then it doesn't matter. I'm sure you know people in real life who have been wearing weaves forever bc their own hair is jacked up. And it doesn't get any better. They're not taking care of their hair. Some people don't care about the health of their hair they just want it to be done no matter what it takes to get it there even if it means damaging it in the process.

I don't think it's a matter of NEEDING the weave for every one because their hair is jacked. If they're on tv or making appearances their hair is going to have a lot of wear and tear put on it from styling for appearances daily which could lead to damage. Weaves first became popular and eventually available to the mainstream because of the modeling industry. Designers wanted crazy styles for shows and models hair was becoming damaged from all the demands. Hence weaves helped to keep the models hair from being damaged. It makes sense. Also wigs and weaves save time for celebs. If you need hair in different styles for different scenes in one video, wigs can allow them to make that change very quickly instead of spending hours straightening or curling a weave. Or even with the wigs, the hair could be done prior to them getting there and just touched up when they put it on.


Also Lil' Kim and Tyra Banks both have hair that's at least shoulder length. There have been pictures. If you saw Lil Kim going into jail without her weave and nails, you'd see her hair was shoulder length. When she came out of jail she had her own hair out, and you could see that it had grown and the dye had faded. Tyra has shown pictures on her show. She usually wears cornrows under her wigs. IDK about the rest of them...

To be honest, once my hair grows back from this BC, I'm still going to wear weaves from time to time even when my hair gets long. I like to change my styles frequently. Why damage my hair in the process if I don't have to?

Maybe they just aren't interested in growing their own long hair. Most entertainers are supposed to be sexy and glamourous and we all know how people go crazy when they see a beautiful face and some long hair, so the weaves give them that instantly.

It doesnt burst my bubble because it still is not her hair and that was my point, She is not always wearing her own hair.

yeah, alot of them actually do have hair....because i saw mary on some celebrity hairstylist's show and her was around APL....and Beyonce also has a nice legnth of hair....not sure how long, but i kno its past shoulder length.

This is quite true. My sister is a local singer and stage actress and has gorgeous, natural, ridiculously thick, past shoulder-length hair, but she wears weaves and braids most of the time for the reasons you posted SummerRain. She takes great care of her hair as well between braiding and weaving with protective styles in phoney ponies.

I'm sure there are some celebs that may just not be happy with their own hair or don't know how to care for it, but it is really practical to protect one's own hair with a weave or wig with all of the maipulation stylists subject hair to, and to easily change "looks."

i agree. weaves offer more versatility. imagine if they wore their real hair. they would probably have to perm every month cuz u know they not gonna let their new growth show or they will use a lot heat. oh and let's not forget the color. they have damaged hair if any hair at all.
