Catholics:Do You Receive from Others or Give Until You Disappear?

Ever feel like that, no matter your vocation in life? So many of us have just let ourselves go to the interests of our bosses, our husbands, boyfriends, children, parents...what about ourselves? Are you the remainder, over-extended, everyone's crutch? But what about you? You are supposed to take care of self. The sin is caring more about your needs over those of others. We are to be generous with all but are to take of our needs and make sure they are met as well. This song struck me the other day and I got to thinking....this is sooo expected of women a d

"Receive" Alanis Morissette

I wake up and first things first
I’m of service
I make sure your needs are met, as a selfless
I give hard and serve hard and now I, I need a break
I give big, I give all and now it’s time to regenerate

[Chorus:]
Today’s all about me, all about cup filling
Today’s all about me learning how, how to receive
How to receive,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

I move on through offerings often one-sided
Being this low on list of worth: over-extended

I give hard, provide hard and now I need some relief
I look out, I proffer, and now I need some respite indeed

My habit to love you first and me: remainders
Favoring you is so knee-jerk, leaves me a stranger
I give hard, impart hard and now I need to retreat
I give out, dedicate and now I need to acknowledge me

Take Care of Yourself - Part II

In my last column, I encouraged Mia to refresh herself by spending more time with God in a true love relationship. Another important part of refreshing yourself is to simply take care of yourself the way God intended.

You should not feel guilty about meeting your own needs. There are many verses in the Bible that clearly teach that taking of yourself is very important. Let me share a few of them with you:

Verse #1 - "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." (Phxilippians 2:4) Notice that this verse assumes that you are looking after your own interests! The only qualification is, don’t just look after yourself but also look after others.

Verse #2 - "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Mark 12:31) Jesus said that the second most important commandment in the Old Testament was to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. Loving yourself is not selfishness. It’s only selfish if you love yourself more than you love other people.

Verse #3 - "In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church - for we are members of his body." (Ephesians 5:28-30)

Although this passage is about husbands and wives, it reveals something very important that applies to all Christians. God assumes that each of us loves our own bodies, feeding and caring for ourselves just as Christ feeds and cares for His own body, the Church. That’s a pretty profound thought, isn’t it? We’re supposed to care for ourselves just as Christ cares for us!

Verse #4 - "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Taking care of your body, your health, and your emotions is not selfish. Why not? Because your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. God has given you the job of taking care of yourself for His sake. You are a tool of the Holy Spirit that He uses for His purposes. But if you damage that tool by running yourself into the ground until you are tired and sick and emotionally exhausted, then God cannot use you very effectively.

God wants you to take care of yourself and make sure your needs are met so that He can effectively use you to meet the needs of others. How can He use someone who is completely worn out?

The Bible certainly supports taking the time to care for yourself and your needs. But remember that your greatest need is your need for Christ. So spend some time pouring out your heart to Him in prayer as you soak in the tub or worshipping Him as you take a long walk. Take your Bible and go to your favorite coffee shop and just spend a few hours reading and thinking about God’s Word.

These times are so important, not just to refresh yourself physically, but to also renew yourself spiritually.

I think this is especially helpful for the perfectionist or the person who always feels she has to be doing *something.* We must remember to take care of ourselves (mentally, physically, spiritually) because only then can we truly give of ourselves and help others.
