Can you recover from dry ends...

... or do you have to cut them off? My ends feel a bit crappy and I know it's probably because I haven't been doing enough moisture DCs since my hair was so hooked on protein during my transition and now that I'm natural, I have to remind myself to make a switch to more moisture. Anyway, my ends are feeling dry and I'm just wondering if I will have to trim them away or if increasing my moisture will put them back in check?
They didn't feel dry while curly, but I did a cool blow-out today and noticed how dry they felt.

Are you sure all of your relaxed ends are gone? I've heard a few people say that either they missed some relaxed ends, or it just takes time (a couple of months, I think) for your hair to adjust to being fully natural. I hope you figure it out!

Dunno b/c I'm a newbie but I steamed yesterday for the first time and wow -- my hair is back in check.

Oh yes is my vote.

I had some dry raggedy ends for a while. I made sure i didn't have splits to cut, and since i didn't I just needed to give crazy moisture and leave the heat alone. it worked for me. I was moisturizing daily.

Maybe that'll work for you too?

Sure you can.

I make sure I add coating of JBCO & Vatika mix on my ends before I go to bed. If I am rinsing in the morning, I apply it heavily. It soaks in nicely overnight.

Another way is to do a dusting, then ensure you keep those fresh ends moist by using a moisture intensive DC. Make sure you are add a extra lil bit of your favorite oil to the ends at night.

I definitely think dry ends can be brought back, I'd be BSL if I had my steamer early last year, instead of late.

It sounds like you know what to do, which is get on your moisture grind.

Thanks so much ladies! I really wasn't trying to cut and have a setback ALREADY. Thank God for this board!
@new: No, I think I got all of the ends, but I'm not sure. I don't have knots or anything so I am just going to up my moisture levels!

Def. yes. For the longest I was clipping my ends because I felt as is dryness = split ends. That just simply isn't the case. I started concentrating more on my ends, baggying really helped alot. Once I started DC'ing overnight (with tons on the ends) did my hair really make a change for the better.

Currently, I'm using WGO, and it's making an overall positive change in my hair - ends.

Definitely yes. Getting my moisture/protein balance back in check, clarifying to remove buildup, PSing to keep my ends out of the air and S&Ding any splits, knots and signs of damage like thickness at the end of strands helped me a few times.

I think ends tend to be dry because if you think of hair strands as a tube, that's the open end that is vulnerable to moisture loss. So even if you were to trim, you end up with a new end that will dry up real fast.

The only way to ensure ends that don't look dry, IMO is after dusting or trimming, practice meticulous moisturizing and sealing with something heavy that prevents moisture loss. Not a light oil that gets absorbed (although you can use that as your moisturizer if you like) but a heavy oil like Castor oil, or a 'cone serum, or even grease. And then as an extra precaution, protective style more often than not. And not only will your ends not look dry but they'll also be nice and full.

Yes, definitely. As long as the hair isn't split or knotted, you can moisturize the ends and nurse them back. My ends were getting really dry b/c I was only using oil at night, when I should have moisturized then sealed....but I'm def not cutting them lol!

Oh yes - yes you can!

My hair was gasping for moisture when I first started my HHJ, but I quickly saw results after I started DC'ing and moisturising regularly. If you keep your heat styling to an absolute minimum and baby those ends will soon be healthy again (as long as they aren't already damaged).

i love the responses you have here and agree!

you can also try using some hair butter when you seal in that moisture and as we are coming up on winter, keep those ends tucked in and away fromt he cold elements.

baby those ends!

Thanks so much everyone. I think I have just been excited about being natural and experimenting with my hair, that I have completely thrown the things I learned on the board out of the window. I moisturized and sealed pretty much everyday after I learned about it during my transition, but now I'm acting all brand new with trying all of these new styles. Will definitely be getting back on my regimen and moisture grind. Thanks for all of the encouragement and tips!
ETA: I haven't used any heat since May and don't plan to until December so I definitely hope to get this problem in check. I was just worried that once they were dry, they were done for. Thanks again!

Thanks for starting this thread. My ends seem to lack moisture quite often due to the environment but I have fallen in love with jbco on my ends and to see others post about it being good motivates me to continue. My moisturizing and sealing usually goes hawaiian silky 14in1 or water mixed with a leave in, then my jbco and then shea butter or Qhemet's heavy cream. I try to do it am & pm
