Can Permanently Dyed Hair Receive Moisture?

I put a Bigen permanent dye on my hair in November and needed a touch up to cover my gray. I went to the Hair Cuttery last night to get a color touch up and the beautician told me that the reason why my hair felt so dry was because when you permantly dye your hair, it coats your hair (like wax on a candle wick) and no moisture is ever penetrated into the hair shaft. This sort of makes sense being that a lot of people have last hair due to a dye job.

0 moisture = LOTS OF BREAKAGE

I am not experiencing any breakage, but I could never get any shine. Could no penetration of moisture and my sealant be the reason why? I would hate to have to BC again. :wallbash:
I only have 3 inches of hair.

BTW- I got a rinse last night. The SHADES brand.

Permanently dyed hair can recieve moisture, its just more work. Dye doens't coat your hair per say...during the coloring process, the dye attacks protein bonds much like a relaxer. Now color alone is actually less damaging than a relaxer but if you have both, its double duty damage and therefore requires more maintance. Check to see if you have product buildup first and if so clarify. When was you last protein treatment? Colored hair needs more protein so if you are lacking in protein, the moisture isn't going hold. You also might have to increase your deep conditioning time and or add heat if you don't already. Don't crank up the heat too much though, according to Tracy, one of our one site color gurus, heat leaches color so you won't need much. You could try wrapping your hair in a hot towel, I just throw one in the dryer for 20 minutes first. What products are you using?

I use Giovanni Tea Tree Shampoo and Moisturizer. I use UBH (deep protein)protein conditioner every 2 weeks. I have not been using heat with the moisturizer or conditioner. Last night,I clarified with Baking soda, rinsed, and deep protein conditioned with heat under the dyer for 30 minutes. I will be sure to step it up a notch with the heat and moisturizer. Thanks so very much!!!

No problem. It will work out, just keep deep conditioning. I haven't used the giovanni conditioner but if you still don't notice any more moisture, try alternating with maybe an aubrey's conditioner.

Natural hair doesn't shine. Well not type 4 hair anyway. So you may be looking for something that isn't going to happen. But dye does make your hair feel dry. I would say to up your deep conditioning.

This is me! Natural category 4 something hair and I use coloring to dye my gray. I definitely cannot combine coloring and a relaxer and expect to have healthy hair.

Hairdresser colored hair and did not deep conditioned. My hair was straw in a matter of days. I researched on here and used Hask Henna and placenta as a deep conditioner (heat) followed by Aphogee moisturizing deep conditioner used with heat.

I'm also a big fan of Mizani H20 night time intense moisturizer which I used SPARINGLY every other day and immediately after a rollersert! Mizani and a small bit of shine serum to seal.

My hair catches light now.....I now have shine!
